Amu is an izakaya, where you order small [plates of food, tapas-style, and the menu is extensive and authentic. Don't go there seeking sushi or typical Japanese fare -- for that, go next door to Sushi Zanmai. Amu is a special experience, small and intimate...(you take your shoes off at the entrance), and interact with the chef at the bar.More

Fantastic Japanese style pub experience. If you are going to come here and complain about the portion size please go to pasta jays instead. The saki selection is amazing and the size of the restaurant truly reminds me of any great watering hole in Tokyo....I can’t say enough good about this place. If you are interested in a taste of Japanese culture this is the place for you.More

It's like a typical Japanese restaurant...small and overpriced. It opens at 5:00 p.m....if you want a seat, you must be prepared to wait in line prior. The foods are okay...service is good...but I will probably not return due to its price.

Somehow overpriced... even though it was really delicious, the portion was way too small for a “hot pot for 2-4,” which was misleading and quite disappointing. And a small bowl of white rice costs $3... people in Boulder must have a pretty good pay to...afford meals at one of their most famous restaurants.More

What a delight. An amazing menu of Japanese cuisine without all the usual sushi stuff. Ask to be seated in Miho's section. She is a delight, describing menu items with ease and expertly preparing dishes. Just writing this review reminds me I want to go...back and sample another handful of authentic delicious dishes. As close to the real thing as you can get, without ever leaving Boulder Colorado!More

A more traditional approach to Japanese food and drink is this small, friendly restaurant. The service is more personnel and caring and the other diners are jovial. The food is excellent, as is the sake offerings.Try the fresh sardines in season. Exceptional!

We had not been back to Amu for ages, so with some friends we went. We enjoyed it immensely, very good food and Sake (a bit pricey). The restaurant seems to have changed a bit since our last visit (uncountable years ago). Back in those...days I would have described the style of food served to me more Kaiseki style Japanese dishes (i.e., small plates (bites) of high end dishes, kinda like Japanese Tapas). You can still get appetizers but now they have more full course meals like Shabu-Shabu, etc. (this is what we got, along with appetizers which were quite substantial). In any case, the food was great and we will go back!More

My wife was born and raised in Japan. I have lived in Japan for more than a decade in total. We are gainfully employed and have been fortunate to enjoy some of the finest Japanese food in the world. We were excited to find Amu...when we relocated to Boulder. We enjoyed the cuisine from chef Yuki-san, and the service and camaraderie from manager Jeff was also nice. We ordered a large bottle of saké and other drinks, and ordered a good deal of food. We poured them drinks from our bottle and had a nice time. The bill came to more than $200. This would have been perfectly fine by us, but... The problem was the waiter that was serving us and working behind the counter. We cannot recall his name, but his hair was dyed red. He was overbearing with wanting to take our dishes and glasses before we were finished eating and drinking, and seemed to insist that we keep drinking from the large bottle of saké we ordered. He is a Japanese speaker and spoke in the language with us, but his understanding of polite/honorific terms is little at best and therefore came across as excruciatingly rude. Because we felt rushed and somewhat offended, we wanted to make a statement by leaving a tip of less than 20%. As my wife was paying the bill and I was putting on my shoes, he informed her that we hadn't paid enough for tip, that, "this won't do." He told her the industry standard is 20% or more in an establishment such as this one, and that if we wanted to come back and be treated well, we would have to pay more. This is when I entered the conversation and told him he was out of line. I dropped it there and asked to speak with the manager outside. We were simply flabbergasted and, though the manager promised that this wouldn't happen again and pleaded with us to try to forget the incident and return for another meal, we haven't been able to. We've seen other reviews about Amu's aggressive waitstaff when it comes to tips and this is terribly unfortunate. What it comes down to is this: even if the food, drinks, and experience are good, it can all be ruined by one person at the end of the evening.More
