My wife and I were blessed to visit Yountville/Napa Valley in October 2024. R&D was recommended by dear friends who live in the area. The location was convenient after visiting the beautiful Trefethen Winery. Our server Jacqueline was particularly friendly and attentive. The ambiance was lovely inside, as it was just a bit too cool to enjoy the lovely outside seating and bar area. My wife enjoyed her Shrimp & Macadamia Roll, but I believe my Ding's Crispy Chicken Sandwich was the winner - just exceptional!
Our only reason for not offering a five-star review was that the wine list was inaccurate - the MerSoleil chardonnay listed on the menu was actually the inferior MerSoleil Silver. We drank it anyway, which was a mistake on our part. Spoiled after visiting so many beautiful wineries and tasting great chardonnays during our visit! We definitely would return but would likely bring our own wine and gladly pay the reasonable $15 per bottle corkage fee!

We had a wonderful lunch experience at R +D Kitchen. The staff was friendly, speedy and accurate with our order. We had the buttermilk chicken sandwich, the fries with dipping sauce, the tuna mango roll and the deviled eggs. The sushi was freshly prepared with a great flavor combination and probably our favorite dish. The sandwich and fries were also very good with large portion sizes. The eggs contain a lot of relish which isn't a personal preference so they are the one item I would not recommend. Otherwise, a very good lunch destination. The restaurant was busy at prime time on a Saturday afternoon so I would suggest making a reservation.

We stopped for sushi and wine between wine tasting appointments. Our group of 6 could not sit together but in separate booths. When we asked about eating on the patio in order to sit closer together we were told the full menu was not available when seated there. this was the only downside of our experience. We enjoyed the spicy Thai roll, spicy tuna roll, rainbow roll and crunchy avocado roll. All delicious! Our server Jordan was pleasant and attentive. We would visit again.

What a disappointment. Cubano sandwich slathered with Mayo? A little drizzle of yellow mustard but lost in mayo. Prime rib sandwich with no Au Jus? How’d you cook prime rib and not have au jus? $20 sandwiches get no fries or any plating effort, just thrown on plate. 2 sandwiches, 1 fries no drinks = $60.

Seriously disappointed in unnecessary hoity-toity attitude here. We have dined all over SF and Napa valley with and without our children, at Michelin rated restaurants. Every place we have been has been accommodating to allergies, dislikes, and allowed children’s modifications. NO children’s menu here and NO allowances for small modifications. My kids simply wanted the spaghetti and meatballs (NOT fine cuisine) without the sauce, or even on the side. We were told by both the waitress and the manager that it’s a composed dish and they cannot modify. Thanks for not welcoming families in any way, R+D. Seriously, get over yourselves you’re not that great. Never going again.

My sister and I have gone to R & D Kitchen many times and always ordered the steak Thai salad which we loved. We were so upset when we went today to learn they removed it from the menu. We were able to get a Thai Chicken salad which was good but no where near as good as the steak salad. My husband ordered a shrimp and macadamia roll and they brought a plain avocado roll which was completely tasteless. I was annoyed with him for not sending it back but he didn't want to make a fuss. Then we asked to see the dessert menu and were told they only had carrot cake and an ice cream sundae, neither appealed to us. I'm sure they used to have a half dozen choices. Needless to say we won't be returning.

This restaurant was chosen based on reviews that it was the best family restaurant to go to in Yountville. we planned our entire trip around meeting here for lunch. we got there early and were told we could not sit outside in the sandpit area because of high top chairs. but there were low adirondocks. Then were told one family member could not go order his drink separately at the bar. The manager in bartender were extremely rude, rude tone of voice. We were about to drop hundreds of dollars there and the final straw was when we were told, we couldn’t eat our food at the table not to even take a bite while the ladies were finishing their wine. we had a meeting and had to finish. We will never go back there and will tell all of our friends long term wine members throughout the valley to never go to R&D restaurant. Our first ever review and experience here.

I have no idea how this place is rated so highly. It was an awful experience. Our server had no personality and was so soft spoken (in a noisy restaurant) that we had to continually ask her to repeat herself. We arrived at 6:30 which meant that everyone seated on our side of the restaurant were getting hit in the eyes by the setting sun. The blinds were only partially closed. Several servers and runners passed by us numerous times, saw this, yet nothing was done. We finally had to ask our server to have the blinds closed. This level of unawareness by management and staff is inexcusable in a venue of this supposed caliber.
Next, the food. Oh boy. I ordered sushi which was painfully obvious that it was not freshly made. Sushi rice behind to get a bit stiff the longer it sits, and this was absolutely the case here. They had sushi chefs on staff but I have no idea what they were doing. They weren’t making fresh sushi, that’s for sure. My husband ordered the meatloaf. While the flavor was ok, the was cooked medium at best. Some parts were closer to medium rare. While this didn’t bother us, there was no mention on the menu that this cooking process was the case. Someone who prefers ground beef cooked medium well or well would have had to send this back.
Overall, I’m horribly underwhelmed at this place and it makes me wonder what those who are eating it highly are comparing it to. Was it better than Applebees? Only barely. Skip this one if you’re a foodie.

Today I went back for lunch at R+D Kitchen in Yountville - I was very disappointed, and this is why: a while back there was a Thai salad with beef that I liked very much so I recommended this to my lunch date and OMG! That salad was replaced on the menu by a Thai Noodle salad that does not contain beef and chicken is offered at $6 additional. This salad was bathed in a sweet dressing that contained an enormous amount of minced mint and peanuts which overpowered everything else. It was so bad that my friend could not finished it. I ordered a salmon salad that was quite good which I shared with my friend. I hope the menu does not continue to replace dishes with less satisfying options or downright bad ones like this one.
I live in Sonoma and I've been to R+D a few times before. I will continue to patronize the restaurant until I get one or two more duds like the current Thai Noodle Salad on the menu.

Writing this review as someone who has been here at a minimum of 15 times, obviously this place is a spinoff of a hillstone/Rutherford grill restaurant with a douchey yountville touch. The service here has been quite terrible the past 4 times we have come, why have we decided to still come? Well the apps are still good and the take out pizza has always been good but the service and the management is always rude and pretentious. Even on a Wednesday evening when the restaurant is dead at 7pm the general manager is still a pretentious dude with a complex, we ordered a few drink and a pizza togo plus an app. He delivered the app after our drinks, when he dropped the app we asked for napkins, begrudgingly he said "fine" and went back to fetch napkins, when he came back he set the napkins right next to my feet on the fireplace and walked off. 35 minutes later we were still drinking our drinks and our pizza arrived, hungry after waiting so long and our drinks still 3/4 full we pulled out a slice and the same shrimpy "general manager" came over to advise us that eating pizza on the premises is strict prohibited, okay dude, close out my check and we will never return. Maybe if the apps and drinks were brought out in a more timely manner, this would have never been an issue, anyways, this was our last time coming here.

Always a good lunch experience. Nice environment and excellent service. Try the interesting sushi menu. We sure enjoyed their Coconut Shrimp roll. The Crispy Chicken sandwich looks and tastes good, but the chicken piece was minuscule. Excellent fries came with two dips plus a seasonings salt shaker. Food arrived promptly, with appropriate accoutrements, empty stuff whisked off, and several “ how is everything.” Fun reading Attire Standards e.g. “gentlemen remove hats in dining room.”

Been coming here ever since we discovered them in 2021. We have brought family and friends too. And each time, the R+D team has delivered! Their service is brisk. It’s understandable. The place is a bustle of activity. We have always had gracious knowledgeable service. Their wine selection features greats. The dishes are executed well. Salmon crisp on the outside, creamy on the inside. Dishes are unfussy and not laden with plate fillers and overflowing sauces. The ribs are legendary (that sauce! And the coleslaw!). The carrot cake would compete with my mother’s. The only thing is, we always have no room to venture out for their pizza. And, they really stay away from parties greater than four. In one sense, I get it. Large groups are a different sort. We had wanted to take some friends there but we would be six. (Should their grown kids stay home?) Oh well.

This review is on Addie at the hostess stand for Service- I was there for my birthday Friday, March 31st. I made reservations for lunch inside for 5 people. My cousin had join us last minute and met us at the restaurant. We walked up to the hostess stand and told Addie we had one extra person so now a ttl of 6. She rudely declined said the tables only could sit five there was no room inside and we would have to sit separately. We didn't want to get separated it was my birthday and it was special for me I've been looking forward to it this year. My cousin saw a big round table outside where we all could sit first come first serve basis. We thought its a little a chilly but it's ok. I preferred the inside experience, but it'll have to do. It was not busy at all outside and there was no one sitting on the smaller tables that seated 2/3 ppl each we had the biggest table. We were all just excited to eat. We took two hightop chairs to our table since it was missing 1 there was only 4 chairs not even 5. Our waiter Kyle he was so sweet and asked us what we would like to drink. Addie then, came outside charging at us again she was very rude and declined we could add one extra person to our table. She took the 2 chairs away, now we were down to 4 chairs again not even 5. Left my 2 cousins just standing there she then came back to our table very rudely with a lot of attitude pointed with her finger right in front of us and counted to make sure we only had four chairs. We were all in shock mouths open. We NEVER got treated that way before most of my guest were first timers which was embarrassing for me. She was VERY unprofessional and treated us poorly. Our sweet waiter from outside Kyle noticed the bar inside just opened up for the 6 of us to sit, but at that point It ruined my birthday lunch experience :( we left and walked over to R&H where it was all of our first times there. It was a totally different experience they made up for it for sure. It was too bad we didn't get to experience Kyle he was so sweet you can tell he felt bad for us and we felt bad for him. We were all ready to spend good money there especially, me it was my birthday and I was ready to go all out. You shouldn't have someone like Addie working there before she ruins someone else's birthday or special occasion.

Outstanding, as usual. Nice, casual environment with great service. Excellent sushi menu, cold noodle salad, crispy chicken sandwich are a few options we enjoy. You can sit outside with a limited menu and watch the koi swim around. Well worth the drive.

We walked in without a reservation on a weeknight and had no problem getting seated, it was not busy. The menu offers good variety. I’d been told they had a great steak salad, but it is no longer on the menu, so I had a chicken salad and it was delicious, the chicken was not dry at all, and I ate every bite. My husband had the roast chicken on polenta, and it was also perfectly prepared, moist and flavorful. Only two dessert options, carrot cake (good, but has a fluffy whipped frosting rather than the usual rich cream cheese frosting) and a hot fudge sundae (they make their own fudge sauce, and I knew it was legit when it arrived in a separate silver dish so you can pour it on the ice cream as you go.) our server was great too.
