Kohnen's Country Bakery is a don't miss if you are in Tehachapi or passing by on the 58. I have never been disappointed with the food and service. For a great treat, try the Cubano sandwich. It's awesome. The pastries and soups cannot be beat.

Kohnen's is bakery/deli with informal seating. They make a good sandwich on fresh bread and there is a delicious assortment of pastries. The Stollen is the best we have had anywhere. That's a holiday item so if there isn't any, try the zucchini bread. Yum.

Thank Jim W
Management response:

Wow, thanks so much for loving our stollen, Jim! That really means a lot. Hope to see you back here for more of that zucchini bread! Best, Thomas & Colleen K., Owner More

The desserts are great I had a caramel apple pie which was very tasty. The special was kabasa with sauerkraut on a homemade bun it was very good also. The atmosphere is relaxed and the dessert choices are endless.

This is a bakery-sandwich place where you order at a counter and they have a few tables. I had a Bierock, which I'd never seen when I lived in Berlin, so I looked it up--it's a Volga German thing, of Russian or Turkish origin, dough with a meat-and-cabbage filling. I liked it. My sister had a grilled Reuben and it... More

We hit Tehachapi at lunchtime, got lucky and found this wonderful, dog-friendly German bakery in the middle of what looked like the place where they founded the town. We sat outside on their porch with some other folks who also were traveling with their pooches. And yes, there was an oversize bowl full of fresh water for Fido. It was... More

We stopped while driving through town to explore this bakery and found a number of baked goods that I enjoyed while living in Austria as a young man. There are sweet rolls, loaves of bread, sandwiches, and other baked goods from which to choose.

Stopped this morning because I was working in Tehachapi today. An amazing selection. I would have ordered one of everything but, being gluten sensitive, that would have been complete overload and although I would have enjoyed every bite I would pay for it later. Even so, I could not resist a butter croissant and a coffee. If you like artisan... More

Kohnen's Country Bakery, located in historic downtown Tehachapi, California, is a delightful contemporary German bakery designed with Old World Charm. Honoring his German food traditions, baker Thomas Kohnen makes every batch from scratch - including some 20 varieties of artisan breads dense with whole grains, full flavors, and crisp crusts. Kohnen's offers fresh bread baked daily, including crusty rye, basil-barley garden, six-grain, sun dried tomato, delicate cinnamon raisin, and even pizza bread, not to mention pretzels, boiled-then-baked bagels, and Brotchen - traditional, crusty German breakfast rolls. We also offer refreshing German beer and freshly brewed iced tea. Desserts are gorgeous and irresistible, too. A few temptations are cinnamon crisps, apricot-walnut kolaches, and espresso chocolate chip cookies. The cafe also serves fresh-made soups and made-to-order sandwiches using Kohnen's breads for take-out, dining inside, or on the patio.
