About
Thomas Kohnen enjoyed 22 years of pleasant family life in his home town of Bottrop, West Germany. He grew up like most kids in West Germany. For him and every other boy on the block, his dream was to become a soccer player until his coach determined Thomas had to have two left feet. He had normal grades and finished high school at age 15 in May of 1977. (Fifteen is the standard age for completing school in Germany.) In August of the same year, he took an apprenticeship as a Konditor (Confectionist) at the Franz Bergendahl Bacherrei. It was the biggest bakery in town and very well known for its disciplined training procedures. He worked as an apprentice for three years while also attending trade school. He became a tested and proven journeyman, learning his trade from A to Z. At age 19 he joined the German Navy for 15 months (mandatory military service is required of all young men in Germany). He left as Lance Corporal.

I picked up a couple of sandwiches for a road trip to Death Valley. A bagel w/ lox & cream cheese & red onion and an exquisite ham sandwich on a baguette. Despite being stuffed in and out a cooler for about 24 hours they were still wonderful. Next time I’ll give them the prompt attention that they deserve. I’d skip the little breakfast buns though. I had one of those on a previous visit and it was OK. Maybe really good fresh but they appeared to just stuff it in the microwave for me.

Finding Kohnen's Country Bakery was a happy mistake. We took the wrong exit for Tehachapi and was driving around looking for a lunch spot. we parked and headed to the restaurant across the street from Kohnen's but decided to try the bakery instead. So glad we did. You fill out your order form as the line moves quickly forward. The service was exceptional!! We ordered a ham, turkey & provolone sandwich on Sheepherders bread which we split. If we didn't live 1200 miles away I would eat there every day!! It IS that good.

Thank God this bakery is not local to me. I would be there every single day buying lots of goodies and be as big as a house. The cookies are scrumptuous and the croissants melt in your mouth. Fresh sourdough bread is to die for. Friendly smiling faces behind the counter answer every question about their goodies. Sandwiches made to order with fresh baked bread of your choice. Decadent danish pastries call out to you from behind the counterglass. I live in Goodyear Az about 366 miles away but i swear i would make the drive once a week if i could. We were staying in Tehachapi for a week and eat there everyday except Wednesday and Thursday (because they were closed). They have inside and outside seating. Soooo if you are in the neighborhood, stop by for one of their heavenly treats and feel free to take some home to family to share. You wont be sorry and your family will love ❤ you for it.

We came here a year ago and I was so impressed with the pastries, so as soon as I found out we were headed up to Clovis I immediately thought we have to stop at Kohnen’s Bakery. This time we tried the poor boy sandwich. We actually bought 2 and it fed 8 of us! They say it feeds 2, but each sandwich is piled high with meats and different types of cheese and is cut into quarters, so one sandwich easily feeds 4, 2 if you’re extremely hungry. This was one of the best sandwiches we’ve ever had. Of course we couldn’t pass up the pastries. We absolutely love it all! We tried a few different items, like the lemon bars and chocolate chunk cookies. One lemon bar can feed 2. We talked to people in line and it seems like people come here from all over. There’s usually always a line, but it moves quickly. The people that work there are very nice and the service is very fast.

Definitely a place to visit. The food here is outstanding and very reasonably priced. The atmosphere is great with people wandering in and collecting food or sitting down to eat it. There is a great little store as part of the building which my wife enjoyed exploring while waiting for our order

We made a detour to Kohnen's bakery yesterday on our way from Bakersfield to Joshua Tree NP. Excellent merchandise! I'd be happy if I could have such fantastic buns at home. Also the croissants, the farm bread and the coconut macaroon are very delicious!!! The little detour it was more than worth it!!!

Too many scrumptious choices to choose from!! Whenever I stop by, on my drive from CA to AZ, I try a new tasty traditional German treat. When I last visited in December 2022, I discovered that Saturday’s are sourdough bread day!! Along with delectable sweet treats, this charming bakery/restaurant serves delectable sandwiches and homemade soup, which includes one of their butter-flake rolls. It’s a little slice of European heaven as you travel over Tehachapi pass. Plan your visit, but keep in mind they are closed for business on Wednesday’s and Thursday’s.

I’ve reviewed this wonderful and high quality bakery before because I live in Bear Valley and love their wedding cookies (I would stack them up against anybody’s), their service is incomparable, but their zucchini bread…oh that manna from heaven. I get it as a door opener and an ice breaker; my wife brings it to house warmings and any friendly gathering. I brought it to my hotel manager where we’re staying and have been thanked three separate times. We have one sliced and frozen at home; there, I’m done, amen.

I have traveled to the Beautiful Tehachapi area for years. I have been to this wonderful Kohen's Bakery many times. They are consistently delicious! I always have their sandwiches. A treat for sure. You get to choose what you want and they make you a delicious fresh deli -style sandwich. Yummy!

So....I’m a self proclaimed bread addict. I look forward to visiting Kohnen’s Country Bakery every time we’re even close to hi-way 58! This bakery is an absolute must. I always purchase an abundance of German bread here and it holds up very well in our freezer. Kohnen’s sandwiches are made to order and prepared with high quality ingredients. They offer a marvelous array of imported German goods and beer. I usually pick-up l mustard and horseradish. Today we selected a couple of jars of local honey. In their sparkling clean display cases you’ll find pastries and other delights. When you visit, try to come early. The lunch crowd can be a little intimidating. But still worth the visit!

This place closes at 6 so we got here at 5 ... so if you're up for an early supper, it's fine. I had heard about this place from friends, I thought the stop was well worth it especially if you have ever lived in Germany and loved the bread there. Had one of the desserts too!

I came on a Sunday. They were out of four of things that I wanted and were rude when I couldn’t figure out what I wanted instead, so I don’t think I’ll be coming back as good as the food is. I felt like the service was basically for people who live here locally..

I love this bakery. I lived in Germany for close to 7 years, and finding authentic brötchen and pasteries in the US is virtually impossible. The Nußeche is incredible along with the brötchen. I visit my folks in Las Vegas 4x per year and visiting Kohnen's is the highlight of the drive.

We stopped here on the way from LV to Paso Robles and grabbed a couple of sandwiches to tide us over until dinner. I ordered a cubano sandwich, hubby wanted a turkey and swiss on rye. They were out of rye bread so they suggested the sun-dried tomato bread. It was a hit! I was worried that the sandwiches would fall apart in the car while driving but they held up just fine! The place is like a factory, churning out orders almost as fast as they come in. Staff is friendly and helpful, too. I'm keeping them on my rotation whenever we're passing through.

We visited this bakery while passing through Tehachapi and were blown away by the selection and quality of the food. The cinnamon rolls and scones were some of the best we’ve ever had - and we have high standards! I bought 2 pies for my son’s birthday party the next day and everyone loved them. The pretzel and cookie we got to snack on while driving were also excellent. The staff were super friendly and the service was great. The prices were amazing compared to what we are used to paying in the SF Bay Area. Any visit to Tehachapi should include a stop at this bakery.
