I got a referral to Bankhead Mississippi Style Cooking from the Kountry Kitchen Soul Food Place in Indianapolis, Indiana. I live in San Marcos California and when at the Kountry Kitchen I complained about how difficult it was to find good Southern Cooking in San...Diego area. The owners suggested Bankhead... and it has taken me over a year to get down to the Spring Valley area for a meal. Yesterday afternoon my wife and I had an appointment only 3 miles from them... so it was the perfect way to finally try them out. It will not be our last visit.... the food was great and truly a great selection of classic Southern dishes to choose from. I'm 74 and grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana... the home of truly great Catfish. I went with a few choices I really KNOW.... Catfish, Collard Greens with Pork, and Mac N Cheese. All three were great. They really know how to bread Catfish and the oil was perfect temp and clean... you can always tell. Their Collards were as good as my Home Made Collards... and for me that's as good as it gets. I don't know if they make their own Hot Sauce.... but it was excellent. Very similar to "Crystal" and a true Vinegar based red pepper Hot Sauce you would find in Mississippi. It was served with Corn Bread... but my wife ate that before I had a chance :-) My wife had a side of Red Beans and Rice and it was very good too. This is not a fancy place.... thank God! Lots of choices on a buffet line and dinners cooked immediately in the Kitchen. Service was friendly and fast. Food was not only delicious... but served piping hot. I've got to go back because they have so many great choices. I can't wait to try their "Neck Bones". They serve the Collards with your choice of meats... chicken, beef or pork. I always do Collards with Pork... so I tried it so as to be able to compare. Fantastic. Everything on the buffet line (Cafeteria style) looked good. The braised cabbage looked wonderful. The Mac N Cheese was creamy and rich and served piping hot. Prices are excellent... food is excellent... what's not to love.More

We flew into San Diego for the Father's Day weekend for some rest and relaxation. I was in the mood for some down home cooking and read a list with the top ten Soul food restaurants in the area. i decided on this restaurant because...it was rated as a 4 star establishment. I ordered the BBQ chicken with a side of collard greens, and a side of chicken and beef gumbo. I can't say that it was amazing but I can say it was good. If you're tired and don't feel like cooking yourself then this would be a good way of feeding yourself whay you're im the mood for without putting in the effort. I too gave it 4 stars.More

I was in the mood for some soul food and stopped here. There is a good choice of food items but I'm not sure how long some things have been on the steam line. I ordered food that had to be prepared for me and...am happy with the freshness and quality of my selection. I may try some of the ready to go items on a different visit. I will be going back.More
