Valentine's Day 02/14/14, my wife and I decided to do something different, right after a busy day at work. we decided to go to a Karaoke place that we have seen on our way to Costco in South San Francisco. The entrance seemed small, just...a simple cafe-restaurant, but when entered the place, inside they had a well constructed area.
Fron the front desk, anybody could see on the monitor the actions in every room, because they have security cameras installed.
For a Friday night, there were too many empty booths.
At the front desk, there were two people. One of them mentioned to us that we needed a reservation, for which I was surprised, but I continued along with the conversation.
I inquired about the karaoke and they said that there were no small rooms available, only a big one. I then asked for the cost and the lady answered $48.00 per hour.
I accepted, just to try it, Just to do something special and different for Valentine's day with my lovely wife.
We were taken to a well equipped room, like a spacious booth, that could have fit a group of 10 people.
The selection of songs were OK, but we were looking for more well known songs in English and Spanish, but we did not easily found them.
Meanwhile we learned how the modern electronic computerized system worked, we had used already 25 minutes of our time. Knowing that I would be paying $48.00 anyway, we decided to stay and sing a few songs that we knew. We did not order drinks or food, not because the occasion wasn't worth the expense, but because we felt that it could be too much.
After singing together Bryan Adams' Everything I do ..." we left the booth, ready to leave.
They do have different Asian languages for songs in their system.
Here it comes the surprise at the front desk:
The total cost had increased from $48.00 to $60.17
They showed us first an itemized receipt, showing the $48.00 plus tax, plus $4.00 "SERVICE."
OK. Let's do the math:
$60.17 minus $4.00, equals $56.17.
$56.17 minus $48.00, equals $8.17
Is this $8.17 a 10%? NO. Is it 15%? NO. I don't know what percent where they really charging, but I felt suspicious about it, mainly when they kept the receipt after I paid cash. Well, I asked for a copy of the receipt, and the lady, a bit nervous, struggled with her Point of Sale cashier register, producing after a few minutes a "NEW"receipt which WAS NOT itemized. The new receipt only showed the total amount (See attached picture). I let it go, but I felt I should write a review on that experience.
We are big fans of karaokes, but we'll not come back to this place.More
