Former bank, now soda fountain/ice cream parlor. The furniture, especially the bar imported from Italy 150 years ago, is gorgeous! Downstairs in the used book area are preserved areas where the tunnels can be seen - the tunnels were used by businesses and gold miners...to take their money to the bank without being robbed on the streets. Extremely pricey for a ice cream soda - $8!More

If you love the old and new-this is a cool place to visit. My daughter found a first edition, Stephen King book for a decent price. Nice people work here.

When we finished all our trip books, we were recommended to try out Legends. Not only did we find some fun books, but the cellar has a spring and a tunnel!

Not a lot of places will even serve an Ice Cream Soda, it seems to be a lost art. They are made at Legends and made well. They offer all the traditional flavors but are also happy to mix it up. I had a praline...pecan with caramel syrup and it was awesome. The soda fountain is amazing. The books and antiques will definitely keep your attention as well. Visit the tunnel! I have been to Legends several times with my family now and we will return!More

We visited the Gold Rush towns north of Yosemite and had a great day. We stopped in this store to look at antique books for my collection. What we found was a fantastic soda fountain and an old building with an interesting history. Including an...underground passageway where the gold miners could bring their gold in from underground. The ice cream was delicious. We both had sundaes. The lady that served us was very friendly and kept us entertained with history stories about the building and the town. If you are in Sonora, make sure you stop here.More

We were told to visit here by a local shop girl. Upon entering you view the large and wooden bar/soda fountain. If you take the stairs to the basement you'll find yourself among me many used books for sale. The air is hot and humid...but it is worth a visit as there are two areas where the shop keeper has staged it to look like the inside of a mine. There is even an area with running water. It was really fun and free to boot.More

I was on a recent vacation to Sonora with my Mom and had read about this shop before our trip. I am so glad we took the time to stop in. Very interesting. According to the woman we spoke to there, the place was originally...a general store for miners. Over time it has had incarnations as several other things, but now is primarily this Soda Fountain, Antique and Book Shop. The shop is cool , with somewhat subdued lighting, and had large round tables surrounded by comfortable chairs. Across the room is a long beautiful wooden service counter , which evokes thoughts of the saloon bars in the old west. Behind this is a tall mirror, supported by large thick columns. You can sit at this counter too if you wish. Mom and I needed the break after touring on a hot August day and this place was perfect. The ice cream sodas were delicious, and my Mom , who is diabetic, made a request for sugar free ice cream, which the lady was able to accommodate. The rear of the store has vintage items for sale, much of it interesting housewares and china. The big fun is downstairs, which is filled with a TON of vintage books for sale. Totally worth a look. I found a book about Mark Twain, detailing the brief time he once spent in the area. There is a corner in the rear of the basement where a stream or waterfall trickles down. On the opposite corner behind a glass door is a tunnel which the old time miners used in order to travel to other parts of the town, once a rather violent and crime ridden place during the gold rush days. You can't enter the tunnel but you can see it through the door. Here and there are miners gold pans and old tools. Interesting atmosphere. The books appeared to be roughly arranged alphabetically by author so you might find the special used book you have been searching for. This was a fun and refreshing place to take a much needed break from the heat of the day. And I did enjoy that Ice cream soda!! I really would enjoy coming back to this place. Definitely a stop for any book or ice cream lover.More

On family vacation passing through Sonora, we loved this place! While my daughter ordered a classic ice cream soda, the rest of us explored the downstairs bookstore in what was once a mine shaft. Each end features a peek into the tunnel, complete with mine...tools and a waterfall. We also saw the safe the miners used to store the loot to take it to the bank upstairs--we learned the safe is now where the ice cream is stored. Great taste of the 1850's on a quick stop in town.More

We had no clue what to expect when we walked in, but were very surprised by the warm welcome we received. The bar area looks and is pleasant, and the lady of the establishment, Margie, is hospitable and fun to talk to. She knows a...lot about the history of Sonora, and she will tell you about the basement walk she has in her shop. I will not spoil the surprise, but will tell you this is a book and antiques store as you probably have never experienced before. And their milkshakes are delicious!More
