Our family and friends went to Pamplemousse Grill for dinner when we were visiting in San Diego in December 2021. We were seated outdoors per our request. At first sight, I was a little underwhelmed by the ambiance. Don’t get me wrong, the place is clean and nicely spaced out, with good linens. I guess the seating area close to the parking lot separated by the greenery so that you don’t see the cars/parking lot was different than what I expected. Regardless, I quickly forgot about the outside world when we were warmly greeted by the staff and our food was served shortly thereafter. All I can say is that everyone in our party of 6 loved his/her food. This rarely happens to us that each dish is so perfectly cooked and delicious that everyone loves what they ordered. We had fish, lamb, duck and beef and the food was extraordinary. In short, you cannot go wrong, no matter what you order. On top of this, the service was impeccable - the perfect balance of a casual chit chat, professionalism / knowledge of the wines and dishes, attention to our needs, without bugging us and disturbing our dinner time conversation. The desserts were also super yummy. The bill was very reasonable; I felt like we actually paid little for the great quality of food and service. Highly recommended.

From the name you enter expecting a classic French restaurant, but what you find is a menu full of eclectic selections, some of which have obvious French origins (one of the specials was foie gras, prepared in different ways) but many others of which do not (Korean short ribs, classic American steakhouse cuts of beef). Portions are larger than you would expect from a French restaurant. The wine list is extensive, covering many countries and varietals, and it is also expensive (>3x retail), although it helpfully has a page allocated to moderately priced wines (under $100). Our server was professional, but in an American style - i.e., gregarious, helpful, funny. The restaurant abuts the Del Mar racetrack and as the racing season was underway, the volume was elevated and much of the discourse seemed to revolve around the thoroughbred racing industry. We decided on a Cotes du Rhone to accompany our bison (a special offering) and foie gras entrees; the 2005 bottle we ordered tasted oxidized so we asked the sommelier for his opinion and he agreed, graciously directing us to a 2017 Beaucastel that was perfect, and later coming back by to reassure us that his colleagues had tasted the wine and agreed with our assessment. Our overall experience was terrific despite this interruption, with glasses of Tokaji and Sauternes capping things off and showing the depth of the restaurant's wine offerings. We shall definitely return.

Pamplemousse dined under the tent. Tables spaced nicely. Subtle lighting. Plants breaking up the space. Reminded us of wedding reception dinners we’ve attended. We liked the open atmosphere more than inside. For appetizer, we enjoyed the lobster ravioli, a huge pocket with fresh lobster, scallops, mushrooms, tomatoes, and asparagus in a light but very rich beurre blanc sauce, $25. Highly recommended. For beef-lovers, the mixed grill (lamb chop, filet of beef, pork tenderloin) with three sauces, $54. Decent size cuts of each, although the filet was a touch overcooked. We shared truffle parmesan fries ($14). Fine service, well-timed. Excellent, expensive wine list. Corkage, $35.

I have to re-rate Pamplemousse as a 5/5 and a top pick for San Diego County. I went last night with my family to celebrate my birthday. Jeffrey Strauss was out on the floor greeting a lot of the regulars and he looked very fit! I moved on from the fish and vegetable dishes and ordered my favorite Mixed Grille and it was amazing, and it would be hard to say if I enjoyed the pork or the lamb chops more, but it was all perfectly cooked and seasoned. My daughter had the NY Bone-in special and I stole a bite and it was even better. We also had a few orders of the truffle fries and they are highly recommended as a starter or just a side snack. We had a chocolate lava cake and the chocolate/peanut butter dessert and both were perfect. They serve some sort of a salty graham crumble with each and it raises the taste to another level. Bottom line, Pamplemousse is on its A-Game and it is highly recommended. I still feel the specially here are the meat dishes and the desserts.

I have been to Pamplemousse many times and this particular visit was a disappointment. To be clear two of the five in our group ordered meat and they were very happy. My wife, daughter, and I ordered mostly vegetable dishes and the quality of the food was poor, bland, and nothing special. My wife also ordered the lobster Mac and Cheese which was mushy. For $500 you really need to get almost perfect quality. If you do go, I highly recommend only ordering the meat.

This restaurant & dinner should have been 5 star, but sadly because it was a big race day they made it a $145 prix fix per person, not including drinks. In addition, we felt rushed. All of that said, the food was delicious, but not worth a $215 bill for one person which was one glass of wine & tip.

We will definitely be back. This was one of our most enjoyable dining experiences. It is a modern, minimalist ambiance - recently rebuilt. I had the venison and quail. Very memorable for me since I have it so rarely. The Pamplemousse martini was whimsical and special. My wife loves chocolate desserts and their dessert was spectacular. We will drive here from Coronado to enjoy these meals.

I heard this place Is a great restaurant so i came with family and it did not disappoint, except in one area (more on that at end). Our food was excellent, the drinks were top notch, the drink server/bartender was friendly and extra nice, the waiter was funny and had a great personality so for the food , drink it was 5 star plus. Now for the one bad part! When we arrived we were told we had our seats reserved at that bar, so we walked over and whoever had sat before us had thrown their napkins on the floor and it looked disheveled, so we weren't sure what to do and then a guy walked up and took one of our seats. When we went back to hostess stand both the hostesses looked perplexed and confused when we said what we observed and we were very nice. The one hostess was silent with a confused look but the other hostess gave us a dirty look and I don't think she knows how to smile or be friendly, and she said "OK?" Like we were crazy or something. Would it have been too hard for her to say oh I'm Sorry , let me walk over and there and see what's going on? Nothing. Really bad impression on a customer who would really like to come back. She is , I am sure, also the unfriendly gal who answered the phone when we called earlier to make the reservation. I will come back with family for all the other reasons and just hope she was having a bad day so 5 stars!!!

Absolutely disgusted that waiter offer us illegal banned foie gras “ off menu” - and when confronted that this was an abomination he got flustered ( not his fault, just doing his job) but we heard him offering it to the other tables around us. I’m dismayed, disgusted & angry that anyone would believe it’s quite ok to force feed and abuse any animal and eat the results…

Excellent food, service, and wine list. A must-go in North San Diego County. Miso glazed sea bass and A5 waygu were both delicious.

Went there for San Diego Restaurant Week, hence the courses offered might not be completely representative of the establishment. Reception and service were good. Quality of the course choices varied summing in a three star rating. For starters, Kim Chee Seafood Martini was blunt while Melon & Prosciutto salad was pretty good. Out of main dishes, both Prime Rib of Pork and Jidori Chicken Schnitze were frustratingly dry and lacking in taste whereas Surf and Turf (medium-rare) was quite good. The best choice of this dinner was a delicious Apple Tarte-Tatin desert, and I appreciated the selection of wines. Solid three stars for this visit.

Went there to celebrate a friends birthday. She was 94, and had always wanted to go as she had passed the restaurant many times when attending Delmar races and was our host for the evening. On arriving the decor was underwhelming and the wine store feature looked in need of a clean. The dining area was equally dull. The food was very uneven, my kobe burger was over cooked but tasted fantastic, the fries were excellent. My wife’s John Dory was ok but the sauce was a little too overpowering and to me the fish was far too salty. Our host enjoyed her tomato soup but the lobster ravioli was disappointing with the past case like leather and reported to staff as such. We all thought the sorbet provided as a mid course cleanser was excellent. People on the next table sent their steak back twice, but they can post their own review. Given the ambience and standard of food we thought it overpriced. Finally on reaching the bathroom by squeezing past people dining at the cocktail bar, you are greeted by a very strange out of place portrait. Inside the bathroom as I used the urinal a recorded voice was heard laughing, and finally said “sucks to be you”. I assumed that they were making a judgment call based on the size of something and an infantile attempt at humour. Just not what you expected at a wannabe high end restaurant. Result is that I will never use this restaurant again and can someone explain what a 4% benefit surcharge is, our host who has worked in the restaurant industry all her life had no knowledge of it.

We returned after being away for several years, due to no longer being in the area. This place is still excellent and has the same comfortable ambiance. Very good noise control. The food was excellent as always. The grilled veal chop was superb. Of special note are the amazing (as always), extra crispy, thin French fries. They are real deal here, and oh so irresistible. This place has perhaps the best wine list in So. Cal., which is a good reason that we came here. Lots of rarities and wines that the general consumer cannot find or acquire. We had a 2010 Schrader RBS cab. and a 2004 Hundred Acres cab. The wine service is top notch, along with the excellent regular service.

It's been several years since we last ate here and it remains one of the best restaurants in San Diego. There is an excellent choices of starters and appetizers along with many main courses and daily specials. Everything is delicious and well presented. The services is great. The wine list is extensive. I highly recommend the 5 corner desert with a sampling of 5 great tastes. It's on the expensive side, but well worth it.
