Good coffee (form Luxe on Montana Avenue) and fresh juices. Also a small art gallery that attracts locals and students from nearby Santa Monica College. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Also a limited menu of pastries, bagels and sandwiches but the best thing are the arepas: small filled corn dough pockets originating from Venezuela or Columbia. Handmade and... More

You can have a drink and two Bolivian sandwiches (Arepas) here for $13. It is not the equivalent to a big American dinner but just nice for a small meal.

I really love this little place, which is unpretentious, at times slow, and staffed by very nice people. My only complaint is that it isn't open on Sunday. There is no risk of this being a chain and, given the rents, it must be difficult to sustain without a friendly landlord. (Thank God not every coffee place is a Starbucks... More

Basically, the service was slow (and it was not crowded), the food was in small portions and I feel it was way overpriced. The quality of the food was decent, nothing special. I visited there only once. Sorry for the negativity, but that's the truth.

If you are around and never had an arepa, you have to come in and get one- best is the chicken or the mango. Black bean is good, too and I think I have enjoyed the pork as well. We live around here and like coming in for coffee and the vegetarian bagel.

I had never had arepas before. I'm in love. It's like a tamale and sliders had a baby. These mini sandwiches are packed full of flavor. I tried the slow roasted pork and the mango and has fresh made passion fruit juice to drink. The cafe itself has beautiful art on the walls and great ambient music playing. The staff... More

This place is usually packed with transient professional workers, students, etc... There is a bar that you can use next to the espresso machine, and other libations and foods.. Its a nice place to hang out. The wifi could be better..

This is a small little place with excellent food. The prices are right! They make it all right in front of you. Sit inside or outside. Their specialty seems to be small little white corn meal buns with different fillings, called apreas( that may not be the right spelling) . We liked it so much we went every day for... More

This is a nice relief from Starbucks. The people are friendly, but not artificially so. Pretty much everything is home made on the premises, and tasty. The food preparation is not set up as a production line, so don't expect your latte to be slammed out in record time or you will be disappointed. I've been several times, hooked up... More

My recent visit to Cafe Bolivar in Santa Monica definitely delivered! Once you walk in you feel a relaxed ambiance and the staff are friendly and welcoming. There is an urban european vibe here, and you just want to pull up a seat and have enjoy a "Cafe Bolivar" and a few Arepes and cozy up! The menu is simple,... More

Staying in Santa Monica

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.
