Sunny Blue serves Omusubi which are traditional Japanese rice balls. Also known as Onigiri, the balls are prepared from white rice formed into triangular or cylinder shapes and wrapped in nori (seaweed). Note: the above description is copied from their website. My favorite's are the Miso Mushroom, Spicy Eggplant and Spicy Tuna. Also love their Miso Soup. Note: there can... More

Sometimes a simple meal hits the spot. Omusubi is comfort food, Japanese style. Like a maki roll but in the form of a ball or triangle of rice wrapped in nori. Delicious and if you ask for it to go, they wrap it specially so that the seaweed does not get soggy before you are ready to enjoy your meal.... More

Cozy place with limited seating. The food is tasty and the homemade omusubi (stuffed rice balls) are delicious. Fresh ingredients and different options for vegetarians. I strongly recommend Miso Beef, Tuna Mayo and Ebi Mayo. This is the perfect place if you are looking for something fast and unique! Complimentary tea for a 100% Japanese experience.

I tasted only one of those, they can be mildly pricy for a ball of rice... Tried the eggplant one and it was deliciously warm and filling.

Sunny Blue is one of the best meals I have ever had. I really enjoyed this restaurant because it had some of the best food I have had in my life. You will love this place. It might not looking great because it is small on the outside, but the food is amazing!

The place is set close to the Santa Monica beach, lots of tourists and expect a line outside at lunch time. We ordered 14 umeboshi, and because the order was 'big' we had to pay 20% tip. The miso beef is the most tasty, tuna mayo was also nice (it's canned tuna though, don't expect fresh fish there) The miso... More

Tasty rolls & yogurt for a bargain. There's often a line, and it's worth waiting for. You can also visit the newest location on Washington which has a few more selections.

Was in the mood for these wonderful balls of sushi and it was perfect. The staff is always very friendly and very efficient. The quality and the flavor is just right.

Don't let the tiny size of sunny blue full you into thinking it serves anything but the most amazing parcels of warm rice filled with ( a choice of fillings ) encased in a seaweed wrap and topped with a mix of herbs and seasoning . Our favourites of these Japanese snacks are filled with miso beef and chicken curry... More

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.
