Every bite was a flavorful delight! The small portion of black garlic and yogurt rice was served with with many turnips (6-8 small ones); barbecued quail with small pieces of orange was juicy with wonderful seasoning. The duck breast and grilled branzino were entree size deliciously different than other preparations of duck or branzino. I didn't care for the Clementine's... More

Michael has hit it out of the park. From the modest storefront entry we were escorted to our table in a lush backyard garden covered strategically by a large tent. The staff were attentive, personable and sincere. You could tell everyone was very proud and part of the team. We ordered a bottle of stags leap cab. It was reasonably... More

The atmosphere was a delightful surprise. Very intimate and charming. Dinner outside without the weather . The food was wonderful and having small plates allowed us to taste many of the offerings. The octopus, quail and beets were our favorites. The service and attitude of the staff made for a wonderful evening.

We wanted a dinner to celebrate the holidays with family. Michael's was the ideal place to gather and enjoy a delicious meal and be able to have meaningful conversations. It had been many many years since I'd dined there and I was pleased to see the ambiance and setting were as beautiful as I remembered. The service was excellent. The... More

When the waitress says that everything is good, you should believe her. Everything was really good. While the bar is in a building, the restaurant tables are out back in what is sort-of-a tent filled with greenery; it's a great looking space with plenty of heaters. The food is California fresh-from-the-market cooking. It's hard to tell from the menu whether... More

The setting is beautiful. Our server, Brian, was knowledgeable and enthusiastic in answering our questions about the menu. We had grilled pork shoulder with peaches, red pumpkin agnolotti, blistered baby broccoli with pigs ears and the Denver steak with porcini bordelaise, Russian kale and chanterelles. The food was skillfully prepared and everything was delicious. Brian recommended wine and even gave... More

We had a delightful experience at Michael's in Santa Monica recently -- in all respects. We felt welcome from the first moment, the host (and owner) and all the staff seemed genuinely to care about the food and our experience. Not a false note. Both the wine (from Michael's Malibu vineyard, I think) and the food were memorable, with an... More

Michael's is, as far as I've come to know, a preeminent "classic" Santa Monica spot. Opened in '79, a hang out for Fleetwood Mac when they were recording Tusk (generally a freaky hot-spot for the whos-who in the 80s), one of the restaurants responsible for "California Cuisine" and sometime home to a slew of notable chefs... I came for a... More

Michael's and its namesake, Michael, are icons of California cuisine laid the foundation for the great dining we enjoy in LA. Its hard to stay relevant and at the top of your game for 30 years. but i am rooting for both. we dined recently with some friends wanting to try out the new chef with the old menu. Not... More

Staying in Santa Monica

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.
