While on vacation, we stumbled upon this staple that has been at the same location for over 40 years. The chips and salsa were amazing and everything was served fresh. My wife has chicken fajitas while I had carnitas. Rice and beans were tasty as well. Staff was friendly and we are glad we found this quiet little place. Highly... More

It being a family owned and operated local business, I always look forward to eating at Gilbert's. I had a smaller version of the super burrito with chicken, and I was stuffed. No matter what I have to do in Los Angeles, I always make room in my schedule for Gilberts. If you like hot salsa, ask for the diablo... More

We live in Florida where it is very hard to find our ultimate favorite food, authentic Mexican food. We fell in love with authentic Mexican food when we lived in Chicago. We went to Gilbert's El Indio late at night at around 8 pm on a weekday. We had to wait a few minutes for a table. We ordered the... More

I have been going to Gilbert's for 30 years. The quality of the food is uniformly excellent. Breakfast is a special treat. The service is quick, efficient and friendly. I particularly enjoy the Machaca , especially if you ask for machaca without eggs. In the evening, the restaurant is full and the margaritas are great.

Taken there for a quick lunch. Excellent food - real fresh cooking, family run for years. By all accounts an iconic restaurant

Tried this place on the recommendation of family who had travelled before us. The first night we tried to get in, we were to,d to write our names in the book, nope that's not for us, refuse to wait for food, don't care how good it is. So the next time we were lucky enough to walk in and a... More

A Mexican staple in our weekly rounds. Often crowded so go early. Tasty traditional old school dishes. Ask for kettle beans instead of refried if you are vegetarian and want to avoid lard. Fun atmosphere and quick service once seated. Often see someone you know too.

Went to this place expecting at least not bad food.Left this restaurant disappointed.Seriously I don't know how this place has excellent and good reviews with the food being so mediocre.Honestly save your $100 and spend it somewhere else or go help a Mexican food truck and invite 2-3 people to eat there is a way better option.

Came here for lunch with husband and shared a Super Special Burrito (beef). Awesome as always. Chips and salsa and pickled carrots are wonderful! Taco Tuesdays runs from 4pm-11pm.

Staying in Santa Monica

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.
