I have been going to Gilbert's for 30 years. The quality of the food is uniformly excellent. Breakfast is a special treat. The service is quick, efficient and friendly. I particularly enjoy the Machaca , especially if you ask for machaca without eggs. In the evening, the restaurant is full and the margaritas are great.

Taken there for a quick lunch. Excellent food - real fresh cooking, family run for years. By all accounts an iconic restaurant

Tried this place on the recommendation of family who had travelled before us. The first night we tried to get in, we were to,d to write our names in the book, nope that's not for us, refuse to wait for food, don't care how good it is. So the next time we were lucky enough to walk in and a... More

A Mexican staple in our weekly rounds. Often crowded so go early. Tasty traditional old school dishes. Ask for kettle beans instead of refried if you are vegetarian and want to avoid lard. Fun atmosphere and quick service once seated. Often see someone you know too.

Went to this place expecting at least not bad food.Left this restaurant disappointed.Seriously I don't know how this place has excellent and good reviews with the food being so mediocre.Honestly save your $100 and spend it somewhere else or go help a Mexican food truck and invite 2-3 people to eat there is a way better option.

Came here for lunch with husband and shared a Super Special Burrito (beef). Awesome as always. Chips and salsa and pickled carrots are wonderful! Taco Tuesdays runs from 4pm-11pm.

I've been to this place quite a few times over the years. It's one of the Mexiican restaurants that the food tastes like its homemade. Everything is very flavorful. The staff is super nice so I really enjoy eating here.

I've been coming here since 1998, husband since about 1976! Great neighborhood family-run Mexican restaurant. I love the cheese enchilada, rice and beans, but truly the burritos and tamales are also delicious too. Awesome chips, tasty salsa, and the carrots are out of this world! It's unusual today in a city this size where the staff remember you and your... More

Whenever I am near Santa Monica, I make a point to eat at Gilbert's. I've never been disappointed and whenever I eat at another Mexican restaurant, I feel like I am cheating on Gilbert's because the food and their service is like family. Estela, my server and a member of the Gilbert's family, saw that I was having an emotional... More

Order anything on the menu and I'm confident you will love it. The Chilli Colorado, the burritos, the homemade chips, etc. The walls are plastered with photos of customers from over the years which is a testimony of their love of Gilbert's and Gilbert's love for their customers. It's a fairly small and casual place, but we always go to... More

Staying in Santa Monica

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.
