Great specials from the Chef. The dinner and service were excellent. Enjoyed the Salmon special and the Coconut Shrimp. It's a warm and friendly resturant with good service and food. we will be back.

An update to previous reviews mentioning karaoke. They no longer have karaoke. Likely due to COVID-19.

After going to the Hinquarter in the past I was dismayed by the quality of the food this time. There is a fine line between cutting costs to save the business and actually making quality food so customers keep coming back!
We have moved out of Santa Cruz but still come back each year and thought that I was taking my sister out for a good meal for all that she has done for me, as I had done the previous year but after paying over $100 for the food (no Drinks) We left unhappy!
The prime rib and the ribs were barely warm and the vegetable was some kind of shredded greens or cabbage sautéed in some kind of oil and very unpleasant to look at and tasted like nothing. We both ordered baked potatoes and I got one (very good) and my sister got some kind of slop that was mashed potatoes maybe mixed with maybe cheese and weird spice, She tasted them and said that they were really awful. We did call the wait person over to get her a baked potato but the wait person did not take the old ugly potato mixture away so she piled in on her bread plate and with the green cabbage stuff and pushed it to the edge of the table but no one ever took it away so we looked at it the entire meal!
It was 7:30 on a Friday night and we were the last people to leave (only three other tables in the whole place had people at them) and the parking lot was almost empty when we got there so they can't say that they were too busy to keep up with orders.
2 dinners, bread & butter (which we had to pay extra for and a salad split between us (that we had to pay extra for) with tip came to over $120 and we drank only water! I won't be coming back and had to apologize to my sister for the unpleasant meal when I wanted her to know how much I appreciated what she had done for me!

The fresh salmon and the Baby back ribs were seriously tasty.
The veggies complements with it.
Had to bring the food to our cabin due to social distancing though.

Three of us were served main course salads. Sad, old romaine lettuce, a third of the pieces were brown on the edges.
The spring mix portion had pieces with edges that were wilted to the point of slimy.
Very disappointed to be served a $17 salad that looked like it was plated in the dark.

Good food, cocktails, and atmosphere. It can be a little loud but not in a bad way. This is our go to date night place.

Love this place! I eat here for lunch at least twice a week. They are known for their awesome steak but their seafood is equally spectacular! My favorite lunches are the margarita steak and the blackened salmon caesar. The black and blue ahi is also perfection. Everything on the dinner menu is excellent (steaks are done perfectly) but my personal favorite is the seafood grill combo (Broiled Salmon with Lemon Beurre Blanc, Coconut Prawns with Sweet & Spicy Thai Chili Sauce, Pan Seared Dry Packed Scallops with a Ginger, Soy and Wasabi Cream Sauce). Not only do they prepare the meats and seafoods perfectly but their sauces are also special and add an elevated quality to the meal.

We are on vacation and really needed a good steak this night. Decided to try this restaurant and it did not disappoint. I had the surf and turf cooked medium rare. The steak was exceptionally tender and the lobster was cooked to perfection. If you get a chance to eat at Hindquarter, I strongly encourage you to.

The food is pretty good. The rib-eye was a little fattier than I normally get but it was cooked to order. Service was very good.

Usually the Hindquarter is very good, but tonight was the (sad) exception. I ordered the Asian Ahi Tuna Salad, which says in the menu is is
"cubes of teriyaki marinated ahi (8 oz.), pan seared (medium rare) with organic
baby lettuces, tomatoes, cucumbers, toasted almonds, grilled pineapple, fresh strawberries, crispy fried noodles and creamy soy sesame dressing. Well, the salad had no tomato and no almonds, but had grapes and canteloupe chunks substituting for the missing tomatoes. The bartender also put inadequate Grand Marnier topper on my Cadillac Margarita, leaving a flavor deficit. Guess I'll have to find something else to order in future! I'm giving 4 stars because of all the times I left Hindquarter happy.

After not having dined at HQB&G for at least 20 years (maybe 30 years!), a friend and I had dinner there last night. I was very pleasantly surprised at what an overall excellent experience we had! We started with the fried calamari appetizer. It was good but, in my opinion, the batter was a little thick and needed more seasoning. My friend ordered the Hanger Steak and I ordered the Elite Cut (17 oz) of Prime Rib. We both ordered our meat medium rare and that is EXACTLY what we got! I would have to say that this was one of the best pieces of Prime Rib that I have ever had in a restaurant. I believe that you are going to order Prime Rib medium rare at a restaurant you need to be there right when they start serving dinner, which we were. The meat came with a baked potato and a shredded vegetable (neither of us could figure out was it was but it was pretty good). We both had "everything (butter, sour cream, bacon and chives)" with our baked potato and they were delicious. We had a 1/2 bottle of Ridge Lytton Springs Zin, which is actually a red blend, and it was also delicious. Our server Angelo and the staff were spot on, not overbearing but there when we needed them.
It will definitely not be another 20 or 30 years before I go back!
NOTES TO THE OWNERS: I scoured the website and never did find where the hours of dinning are listed. Perhaps I, somehow, missed it. I had to call and ask what time you start serving dinner. You need to update the prices that show on the website. The Elite Cut of Prime Rib shows as $35 on the website, we were charged $37.50. The Hanger Steak shows as $28 on the website and we were charged $30.50.

We were in Santa Cruz for the Clam Chowder Festival, when our little wanted steak and mashed potatoes. We had been eating fish and, of course, clam chowder to our hearts content. We went to Hindquarter, and it was delish! I had the prime rib with mashed potatoes, and my husband had the Cowboy Ribeye. Both were superb! The mashed potatoes are a dream! Our little one was satisfied and so were we! Wine selection quite suitable. We will be back!

Throughout the years my husband and I have had excellent meals here. We usually go for prime rib (and take home leftovers) or burgers. Steak salad is also a favorite, and the shrimp salad makes a great lunch. One thing we like is that they cook it to order, and when I say medium rare it arrives perfectly pink on the inside. There's a tendency among restaurants these days to overcook meat, such that you must say "rare" to get medium rare. Not so at the HQ.In all the years we've eaten here we've only had to request one do-over for over-done meat.
Service is friendly, though sometimes a bit slow. Many of the wait staff have been there for years. The bus people are on top of things, bringing bread, butter, and water, even when wait staff is delayed. Wait staff always apologizes for delays. It's not a place to come for a fast bite, more to linger and savor.
We aren't crazy about the mixed drinks here, so stick to beer and wine, of which there's an impressive selection. Iced tea is also good here, as is the coffee. The temperature is often a bit cool, so dress accordingly.

We were referred to HQ by the B&B we were staying with for my wife's birthday on January 14th. First I must say that the hostess and the waitress were both friendly and helpful. No problems there. However the food was a somewhat different story. My wife ordered her favorite birthday dish, the 10 oz. Lobster Tail. it was a beautiful thing to look at when it arrived and the plate was lovely with a baked potato and veggies. She's ordered this same entre at many other places and I've seen them dozens of times. When she detached the 'meat' from the shell it was less than 1 inch thick at the end and way thinner for the rest of it. The thing was undercooked, raw/translucent despite it's lack of size. She ate the edges and what was firm and left the rest. I finally noticed this and that she hadn't eaten the veggies either and she said that the beautiful carrots and green beans were warm but so hard from undercooking she couldn't eat them. The baked potato was literally black and hard on the outside so she ate what she could. I spoke to the waitress and she went to talk to someone. Came back 10 minutes later and said the manager was going to take off $10 from the $38 dollar entre. They had been told by the B&B that this was her birthday so did comp her desert of a wonderful, tasty crème brule. We had high expectations about going here and were surprised how poorly the kitchen prepared things and how management reacted. They should have offered her another lobster cooked correctly and served her something she could actually eat. This was our first and last visit to Hindquarters.
