Have eaten here several times over the years when I visit Santa Barbara. It is still one of the best Italian experiences food wise. Always pretty crowded at lunch times but the experience is just like eating in a small trattoria in Italy. It is not romantic or glamorous like many Italian places try to be in Monticeto - just... Via Maestra is this delightful little bistro or "Bar" as they are called in Italy - swamped at 2:00 one afternoon - took forever to get two sandwiches as they were "slammed" - i understand that - short-staffed who were working their fannies off trying to serve everyone who had ordered for eating there.... they are popular - try to... Order food at the counter and it is brought to your table when ready. Strangely a charge is made to sit at a table. But the sorbettis and gelatos are fantastic.

Ran in for some Gelato on a warm day, and saw all of the good food; plus the staff seemed pleasant. We ordered five dinners to go the next night. Excellent. Had some outside tables too. I will try it again.

Delicious Italian food in cozy setting. I had the pumpkin ravioli with brown butter sauce, yum. Lasagna was good too. Strip mall setting but somehow manages to be romantic and intimate. Service was very good.

I know, a lot of exclamation marks, but this little gem is worth a visit. The menu is incredible and amongst the many choices I went for the 'cozze', the very delicious clams. Cooked northern style, the dish is a whole meal. Friends had sandwiches and they were all impressed. Wine was served in real wine glasses. Very friendly staff... More

Via Maestra is a wonderful, casual neighborhood restaurant. The food tastes like Italy. There's an emphasis on seafood and the linguini con vongole is just delicious as is the insalata di mare. You order at the counter during the day and the table service is prompt and attentive. We recommend it highly.

Everything here is both delicious and well-presented. It's also expensive, but with no pretentiousness. You order food at the counter, it's prepared and brought to you. It's small place, the sort a cosmopolitan dowager would frequent because of the food quality and service, not to suggest that it's geriatric; it isn't. Besides full meals, they also make cannoli, fancy desserts... More
