Excellent food and service. We were visiting the area and ate in San Francisco and San Rafael but this restaurant was absolutely heads above all others. Highly recommend

When we were seated we politely asked if it would be possible to have separate checks because we were on business and we were required to submit separate receipts for expense reports. We were told yes. At the end of our meal, we were handed...a single check. When I asked what about the separate checks that he had agreed to, he dismissed me and said, we're too busy. POOR customer service. They could have worked with us in some way but they CHOSE not to. The carpaccio di tonno was VERY disappointing. It did NOT look or taste like Ahi at all. The zuppa del giorno was thin, salty and flavorless. The capesante al tartufo was DELICIOUS. The scallops melted in my mouth. The mushrooms were perfectly cooked. The staff said one thing, then did another and blatantly did NOT CARE. The appetizer and soup were a complete disappointment. The scallops were terrific. If it wasn't for the scallops, the experience would have been a total let down. For their prices and poor service, I would not recommend it. We spent a lot of money on a dissatisfying dinner.More

My girlfriend and I stopped in for lunch last week. I had a seafood risotto entree and clam chowder. My girlfriend had a salmon entree and minestrone soup. The food was delicious; the best food we had during our trip to California. Portions were generous...and the prices were reasonable. Our server was great too. Chatted with friendly locals at the adjacent table. Pleasant outdoor seating. I would definitely go out of my way to dine here again.More

Had their “Insalata Di Barbabietole Con Rucola” salad, which was delicious. Probably the best salad I’ve ever had. Made with arugula, red and yellow beet chunks, gorgonzola cheese, walnuts, and vinaigrette. Check out the recipe on-line at the restaurant. Wow!

My husband picked Il Davide based on the reviews and we were not disappointed. We went early for dinner and the place was already crowded. I think we were the last table without reservations to be immediately seated. But it did not affect the service,...which was efficient. They really stood out for their gracious accommodation of a mistake that was clearly my own. When I accidently ordered the wrong dish (something with meat, which I don't eat) and we discovered my mistake, the waiter quickly whisked the dish away, and brought my preference without so much as a blink or a hint of reproach. Obviously, the management is owed credit as well for creating an environment where the staff could do that. Once we sorted the food, both of our dishes (I had the PAPPARDELLE AI TRE FUNGHI) were excellent. We will definitely go back the next time we are in San Rafael.More

We weren't in San Rafael long, so I'm not sure how Il Davide compares, but it was a pleasant find. We met a couple of friends we hadn't seen and enjoyed a slow, satisfying meal. Everything seemed freshly prepared and was served with a smile....Very unpretentious and delicious. Be sure to stay for dessert!More

We had a delicious meal outside to ight.My husband had a lamb shank with creamy polenta and I had pasta with scampi, followed by a decadent dessert with a rich brownie topped with peanut butter gelato and Carmel and chocolate sauces. The wine was squisito...as well. You can't go wrong dining here.More

Perfect soup and salad luncheon. Bread and olive oil. A nice wine. This was a spontaneous find for us while on vacation. Outdoor dining available.

I had lunch for the first time here, today. I ordered an appetizer, primi o secondi dishes. Everything was wrong. It took more than 10 minutes to get a glass of water; and another 10 to order. I ordered all at once. I had plenty...of time to look around. I was easily the youngest person there (at 43), by a couple + decades. This was initially just a "huh" observation....as we're all just happy to get to be out. Server repeated the wrong order back to me 3-4 times, though he *did* only mess up the soup, ultimately. Let me start there: The milestone was nothing short of big chunks of onion and celery...w/a couple carrot, potato, chunks and 1 whole bean in there as well. It was NOT seasoned, so it had no taste other than onion water. The beef carpaccio was ok....and the amount of capers easily made up for the complete lack of salt. Don't know why they put plain yellow mustard on it, though. Bad idea....I scraped it off. The brought the mushroom/truffle ravioli and short ribs w/soft polenta out at the same time -- which was fine, since I told them to bring it in any order....I just didn't imagine twins. Sooooo...the polenta was lumpy and TOTALLY unseasoned. Ditto for the short ribs - totally unseasoned. The balsamic drizzle that accompanied it was present in more quantity than the short ribs.....and seemed to be straight from the bottle (ORRRRR just again unseasoned) Not a single thing on the mushroom ravioli dish was seasoned. Also, the ravioli "square" was 85% pasta, and only 15% filling.....NONE of which was seasoned. I finally stole a salt shaker from a table near me that had left recently, and it really didn't help since it was after the fact. I asked the server to go too the chef and ask if the kitchen was out of salt, as everything was so tasteless and bland. He disappeared and I assumed he was talking to the kitchen. But moments later, some women came stomping up to me saying "you found something wrong"? I said yes, nothing it seasoned, and one can't salt already cooked foods -- most especially meats and pastas. Angry, old, stomping, woman then asks: Have you ever eaten here before? Me: No, but I expect every restaurant, especially ones charging these prices, to serve me seasoned food, and not plain, bland, disrespected foodstuffs (as she turned her back to me and started walking away) She returned to say: Our customers do NOT want salt on their foods. We've had these recipes for 26 years and have stayed in business with them -- you ordered 2 of our signature dishes! I didn't know they were "signature dishes", but if I'd known those 26 year old recipes didn't include seasoning in them, I'd have skipped it altogether. So congratulations, madam, that your 26 year old recipes are still wanted by your elderly regulars. What will happen when the restaurant 'loses' the regulars, and no one else will pay those prices or tolerate incredibly bland and no taste "recipes"? Here's the answer: You will close. If you'd planned this as a legacy for next generations, I 'PRAY' they have their own recipes that include seasoning. If not, that will be the end of you're quarter life 'legacy'.....which she/they will likely blame on "cancel culture" or something similar atm; when it's really the simple fact that you're too cheap to buy, and USE, salt.More

These are challenging times for restaurant owners. But ll David does it so well. The restaurant is one of my favorites in San Rafael. Even a take-out meal did not disappoint. We ordered on line for pick up at 7pm. The food was ready right...at the appointed time. The pick-up was efficient, friendly, comfortable and fast. We had ordered polenta with mushrooms, my very favorite, beet salad and a seafood pasta dish. Bread, butter and Parmesan cheese were included. We enjoyed the meal at home soon afterwards; it was hot and, as usual, delicious. My only complaint is that I wish the polenta dish could become a main dish not just an appetizer. Please support this excellent restaurant. We wish for it to continue its operation.More

We dropped in for a Valentine's Eve date, and it was a treat, though not in all the ways we expected. The place was CROWDED. I have no idea if this was because everyone decided to visit on a Thursday night to beat the Friday...Valentine's Day crowd. It led to some epic people-watching, including a Marilyn Monroe impersonator. We had a reservation, but it still took us a few minutes to be seated. And while our server was friendly, we wondered if they may have been shortstaffed, because it seemed like we were forgotten about for long periods. Sometimes that was nice, but it took a long while for us to actually make an order. For appetizers, we had the burrata (really, really good, and a substantial portion) and the torta di porri (meh; it was fine, but we probably wouldn't get it again). For dinner, I got the orechiette alla davide; it was a good-size dish and tasty. She decided among several options and went with the penne con pollo affumicato, and while it was fine, she wished she had ordered something else. Overall, a nice experience, but maybe not a place we'll visit again given all the other options nearby.More

This is a very popular restaurant but perhaps there are not many others to choose from in the San Rafael business district. I went for lunch and ordered the Crab Louie salad. It was served with a spicy dressing which was unusual, masking the flavor...of the crab, although when I took a bite of the crab alone it did not taste fresh. The lettuce was very dry and seemed not to be washed. Also, there were Kalamata olives and capers on the salad which also was strange. I've had many Crab Louies and this was not good. A few hours after lunch I experienced intestinal problems which lasted a couple of days. My friend ordered a different salad and was not especially pleased with it either. This restaurant will be crossed off my list.More

We enjoyed a leisurely lunch on a rainy day. Inside atmosphere is inviting. Mostly an older clientele. The Caesar salad comes with pasta and is offered as a larger small plate or as dinner size the shrimp and scallops. The small size was plenty large...enough and an excellent Caesar- best we’ve enjoyed in ages. Lobster ravioli small plate - delicious. Clams and pasta- also excellent. All quite rich. Scallops and mushrooms large plate with a nice side of steamed veg was lovely- also rich. Wine selection is good and reasonably priced. Worth the trip, would return.More
