This was a business dinner. Our associates from the area chose this restaurant. Based on past visits, we knew it would be an outstanding night out. The senior VP ordered the bottle(s) of wine. The service was measured, professional and not overwhelming, which I prefer. The menu was not overpowering but different food categories for the 4 of us to... More

Awesome service, awesome food! Had the grilled rib bone in, wife had the slow roasted prime rib. Both were one of the best steak ever. Cooked to perfection and didn't wait long for them. The oyster on a half shell were good too.

I've been to Kingfish several times for special birthday dinners and such but haven't been for a while simply because it is pricey. My friend talked me into dinner there. I was very disappointed. I would call it "worst of both worlds:" fine dining prices but dive bar food/service. We ordered the tuna tartar appetizer and it was flavorless but... More

We've been at this restaurant several times for family occasions & have enjoyed being downstairs & also in their upstairs area. The food has always been good & the staff very helpful.

First, we have to talk about the service, which is impeccable. Friendly, client focused, and highly organized. Great service. Now the food. The salad was crisp, fresh, and tasty. Had the filet mignon and it was cooked perfectly...rare but not bloody. Tender and tasty with fresh vegetables that were cooked to perfection. Kingfish is the epitome of service excellence and... A very long and complicated story short: Kathy, the co-owner of Kingfish, helped us to organize a terrific "Celebration of Life" to honor our youngest brother. We held it in the Estate Room and served appetizers with an open bar. Everything -- the servers, the bartender, the food and the ambiance -- all worked in harmony to make the event... More

I had a glass of wine , which was really tasty and I ordered the Octopus and I must say I really liked it but the octopus was quite big so I must say the meat was quite fat... But overall the atmosphere in the restaurant is nice and staff is friendly and helpful to explain the meals. It's nice... More

I love to come to this restaurant where the service is excellent and the menu always has some surprises. The food is very good, it is a fusion menu, with great fish and meet, but also good raw bar and drinks.

Food was just average but prices were high for what you get. Bar was very expensive but drinks were good. Can be very noisy when crowded. Service was ok but slow. Had to ask for water twice.

Food was good but pricey. Given the prices, I think the food should have been spectacular. Service has improved. In reference to questions below, there is a private room that will seat about 12 - 20 I believe. I believe that valet parking is offered, but I walk over. Otherwise, one has to find street parking or use municipal garages.

Description
Kingfish Restaurant, named after Huey Long, "the colorful, bigger than life man", is a restaurant that is also "bigger than life and very colorful. Kingfish is a one of a kind restaurant situated in downtown San Mateo in a historical 1920's art deco building. The restaurant features an exhibition Oyster bar, 3 full bars exhibiting a broad range of spirits and talented mixologists. There are 2 wine cellars stocked with some of the very hardest to find wines in the world, a Speakeasy lounge that always has an unparalleled live music line-up, cozy booths, and private dining rooms that would make even the French Quarter jealous. "...to walk into Kingfish is, to walk into someone's dream.", is how acclaimed SF Chronicle food editor, Michael Bauer, referred to the decor at Kingfish. Ownership takes great pride in the fact that they have one of the largest collections of authentic, Southern-Lousiana folk art in the country, to which they are always adding. The food at Kingfish is American and gives almost every palette a reason to crave. There is a passion that emanates directly from the owners, to serve only the freshest seafood possible. The steaks that are served are some of the best and tastiest you can find in the world. The ability to give each guest exactly what they crave and desire has been an increasing goal of Kingfish in recent years.
