We finally had a chance to go to the Heritage BBQ recently opened in San Juan Capistrano. The lines have always been long, so we went in the afternoon just before 3 PM. The line wasn't long but the line moved very slowly. When we...finally go to the front of the line, we found out that all they had left were brisket and a sausage, everything else was sold out. I really wanted to try their ribs, but since we had spent a half hour in line, I went for the brisket and my GF went for the sausage, and some chili. The brisket was unremarkable. I tried a slice of the sausage, it was not to my taste. My GF ate half of the sausage, so we took the rest home for the dog. Apparently it was not to her taste either, as she took one lick and spit it out. My GF devoured the chili, even getting the spill over into a spoon and eating it. I am going to give the place another try, they open at eleven and they said if you want to get the ribs, we should be in line by 10:30. I guess an early BBQ lunch is in the future. But I certain won't stand in line just to get the brisket. Not worth it.More

Resident of San Clemente since 1971..... Seen it all around here.... I’m known for my lack of patience and tolerance of bad service.... However I was on mission in the absolute pouring rain for football food for the family.....Had to try Heritage.... Here are the...anti tourist idiot rules.... 1) Print off the damn menu and have it in your Wet cold pocket in line..... 2) Check their Twitter feed often for unbelievable specials like today’s half chicken with salsa verde and tortillas Also do never miss Burnt Ends Stew if available...... 3) Do bring umbrella and chair.... 4 ) The wait from gate to order window is no less than 2 hours..... 5) Entertainment along the Que is priceless....so many new friends from all over the OC 😂 6). If you actually make it to ordering window .... know wtf you’re doing... Proteins first ....specials second .... sides last ... they will appreciate that.... If you mess up “No Soup For You”move on.... 7). Beer runners are gracious yet so distracting on you’re focused protein mission....need at least two decent Chardonnay’s to back up fabulous craft beer selection...... 7) check out and payment easy as long as you brought Brinks Truck 😂..... 8) To go packaging professional and well thought out.... 9) This will be a famous “go to” place if they can get the Texas kinks out..... We will be back for sure..... Not in the pouring rain.... Thanks MartyMore

No water served. Have to buy a bottle of soda or a bottle of water, or beer at the bar .. sorry not impressed. Brisket was good, mac and cheese was good.

Literally the best Texas Style BBQ you can find in California. The juicy fall off the bone dino beef ribs (only available on the weekends) are a must try item. Make sure you line up before they open to ensure they don't run out of...the beef ribs. Danny also makes one of the best briskets around. I've never been a fan of the brisket until I tried the brisket here. Super juicy, smokey, and tender. Don't forget the corn bread you will regret it if you miss it. Big respect to Danny and heritage bbq for helping out the community during the peak of covid by providing for the impacted service industry workers. Not just once but multiple times with collaborations with other generous people/co. Heritage bbq is here to stay. The hype is real and it will only get better. Go now while the word has not spread too far because sooner or later, you will have to wait even longer in line to enjoy Danny's work.More

A great way to hang out with friends and enjoy good BBQ. Highly recommend. Sit outside at night by a firepit or hang out during the day with outdoor benches and game area.

I've been stalking Heritage Barbecue's social media for weeks since they opened. Heritage BBQ is Central Texas-style barbecue and they are the closest to Texas barbecue that you're going to get in SoCal. I am familiar with their opening hours and that they sell until...they run out. I decided to get in line on my birthday because a) it was on a Friday this year and b) I could get there before they opened with an acceptable wait time because I had the day off. I brought a beach chair, hat, bottle of water, extra battery pack, AirPods, a mask, and sunscreen. I was all set. I parked in the nearby lot and made the trek to the corner where the line had started. I happened to be right behind the first group of 3 people and therefore 4th in line. They were gracious enough to let me share the shaded area with them. I probably got into line around 1:45 pm and Heritage opens at 3 pm on weekdays. The wait was mostly pleasant but the summer heat can be harsh. Having cold water helps a lot. It's too bad they don't offer water to the folks in line. This would be great but with COVID, it's not feasible. There were a couple of curious folks walking by asking about the line and whether it was worth the wait. Since it was my first time, I kept mum. The doors opened promptly at 3 pm and they began taking orders. The staff had masks and gloves on. They did emphasize social distancing but it's kind of hard when shade from the summer sun is scarce. There was a staff member out to let us know what the sides and sausages of the day were. I knew to check social media for any special items as well. They have a sandwich board with all of the specials available and cross off as they sell out. Capistrano Brewing also had staff stopping by to take beer orders. I ended up with the Coffee Porter ($7) which was described as being lighter than a normal porter. You need to keep your food receipt to show to Capo for the beer purchase. Finally, I was able to order at the window. Meats are priced by the pound. I asked about ordering less than a pound, specifically a quarter pound and they said it was doable. I opted for: 1/4 lb pulled pork, 1/4 l/b brisket, 1/4 lb pork ribs, 1 hot-link sausage ($6), garden pesto mac & cheese ($7), jalapeño cheddar cornbread muffin ($6), full complimentary pickles and sauces. I ordered my food to go because I knew I wasn't going to finish it all there but I also wanted it to be pretty enough to photograph. The camera eats first! They did a great job plating it and I received my food maybe 15-20 after they opened so it was fairly quick. I like that they don't slather BBQ sauce on the meats and rather leave the smoked meats to stand on their own. The meat was tender and it was good on it's own. It was also really good with the Bourbon BBQ sauce too. I'm not a fan of mustard so I didn't try their spicy mustard BBQ sauce. They use high quality heritage meats. They can trace the lineage of the animals back to the farms and pastures they were raised in. This is why the meat is priced as such. The meat also reheats well. There's a nice smokiness to it which is subtle but oh so good. The garden pesto mac & cheese is phenomenal. It was cheesy and had a light pesto flavor. Also, it reheated well. The cheese sauce did not separate. One of my favorite sides of all time! Get it, you won't regret it! The jalapeño cheddar cornbread did not disappoint as it was cakey and slightly soft, almost creamy in the middle. It was tasty as well. It didn't take me too long but I did notice that they forgot my hot link sausage. I rechecked my receipt because I repeated my order twice. I showed my receipt to one of the staff and he was able to bring out a hot link sausage for me. He did check my tray to confirm first and then walked inside to rectify the situation. I also forgot to order the banana bread pudding but my friend ordered it and I was able to steal a bite. It was sweet but good. Overall, Heritage BBQ is worth the wait. I recommend to get there early for the best selection, as they tend to sell out throughout the day. From the locals who walked by, they confirmed that there is usually a line, which is a testament to the high quality barbecue and sides that they produce. Check their twitter for line updates and special menu items. One of these days, I'll be back on a weekend to try their beef ribs. But for now, my BBQ cravings have been satiated. Great food and awesome service . The area is a great environment and perfect for families. Be prepared to wait. Remember this food comes straight from the cookers and onto your plates not like commercial “bbq” that isn’t smoked with real wood and ends up...being cooked in electric smokers. This is real good quality meat and no sauce is needed.More

I got there at 11;15 am on Saturday and there were probably 20 people in front of me. They open at noon. It was hot outside, but they serve drinks while you wait in line. They are affiliated with the Capistrano Brewing Company and serve...beers, coolers, Mexican Coca Cola and Bottled Water. You order by the weight. I had the brisket and it was great. It is a bit pricy but I really enjoyed it. To me this is the best BBQ in South Orange County. They also have a banana bread pudding which is tasty. I think the best way to order is to do it family style and get the beef and pork ribs, sausage and brisket.More

If it's Texas BBQ you are looking for in Southern California, this is the one. I had the privilege of eating here on opening day, 8/8/20, knowing that I was in for long lines as hundreds of folks have been waiting for years for this...restaurant to open. The owner and his wife have been running pop-up events and honing their BBQ chops for a couple of years and have built a huge following based on their authentic Texas BBQ style and culinary surprise additions. Opening day is not the way to properly rate a restaurant - there are too many glitches that can impact the day, but I'll be back with an update after I have had a chance to eat there a few more times. I waited in line for nearly six hours before I got my order in; however, that was my expectation going in. That wait time is not the norm. In fact, on their first week day, there were only five people in line at their 3:00 pm opening. By 3:30 the line peaked at about an hour wait. Today at 3:30 pm it is a 2 1/2 hour wait. I expect the lines to get better as time passes. Ambiance: Heritage is all outdoor dining at wooden benches and tables or take-out. It is attached to Capistrano Brewing Co. so a great selection of beer is available. No hard alcohol is served. The seating area is within a large corral with two 1,000 gallon BBQ pits on one side and the street on the other side. The order line runs parallel to the street and snakes around a third 500 gallon BBQ pit before arriving to the order windows. All the employees have masks and customers are required to wear masks while in line. No masks, no food. Beverages are available for purchase while in line as well as when seated. Everyone is very customer oriented, so if something is amiss, just speak up and they will make it right. Heritage is located on the edge of a large plaza that is part of the train station and directly across from Mission San Juan Capistrano. Plenty of parking. The Food: Everyone stands in line to order; no call in orders at this time. All the meats are sliced and weighed when you order at the windows so the process takes longer than you may expect. Beef Ribs, a specialty not found at many BBQ restaurants, are served only on weekends. Get in line early if you want one of these Niman Ranch prime plate ribs. They run from one to two lbs each. They are always the first to sell out. Imagine a two lb piece of melt-in-your mouth beef hanging off of a 10 inch bone. Can easily serve two or three or leave plenty for leftovers. The next best thing is the Brisket. Make sure you get some "moist", the fattier point versus the drier flat portion of the whole brisket. Porkbelly burnt ends are excellent, but only available on occasion. Pulled pork is good, but not your best value. Pork spareribs are from heritage breed hogs, these are good although mine were cooked a bit longer than i prefer. The sausages may vary daily and the two types we had, chile and cheese and crawfish boudin were very good. We did not try the smoked turkey but heard other guests comment that it was excellent. The sides are very good to excellent and make good use of Daniel's culinary background. The cheesecake was excellent and I heard the banana bread pudding was a real treat. I'll try it next time. Value: Heritage uses top shelf products and the BBQ pits are works of art. This is craft BBQ at its finest and excellent BBQ is expensive to make. The prices are on par with the top BBQ restaurants in Texas. Despite the expense, I'll be back again and again.More
