My advice to the owner, find and hire a German chef then fire the cook, because he doesn't know how to cook. Yeah, they don't know how to cook nor bake. The apple strudel was terrible. They refuse to tell me if the apples are...from canned. They are mushy and nasty. The food here is one on a scale of ten, one being the lowest. My Grandma was German and made the best German chocolate cake... with real pecans. This place needs help or a real, German chef. Terrible cake, awful strudel and undercooked cookies. Potato pancakes are nasty and have a funky taste. This is the last straw. We will not be coming back. Hire a real chef and apologize to your guests that you've been fooling and taking their money. Gordon Ramsay will help you, but you have to recognize you need him and ask. Best wishes. Not recommended.More

Outstanding diner! Gunther’s gets a lot right on their menu which I could go into at length. However, my go-to is the Rueben. Simply great. Lots of meat, the right amount of kraut and everything else. The other must eat is the chocolate chip cookie....My strong recommendation is to take a few home for later. Then when you are ready, put the. In the microwave for 8-10 seconds. It gets the chocolate and sugar warm and soft. Out of this world! Please visit a lot. I am concerned that they will close due to the high cost of living and getting help. It is an institution.More

I went to Gunther’s last month at the recommendation of a friend. I spend a lot of time in the NYC area and Gunther’s is about as close as you can get to an East Coast local dinner. Knockwurst & Sauerkraut, German potato salad, red...cabbage, egg salad, meatloaf and stuffed cabbage are not your usual fare in San Jose. So it’s nice to be able to go someplace where Swiss chard is not on the menu. A place, where you can enjoy foods that undoubtedly will help you put on a few pounds but are enjoyable in moderation. A great casual place to enjoy your meal and have tapioca or bread pudding for desert.More

Haven't been to Gunther's in many years. I guess I forgot why, but now I know why I wont go gain. My wife had the wiener-schnitzel which was tough. The portions were large but mostly breading and tough meat. The red cabbage was overdone and...mushy. My hot pastrami was dry and one slice of bread was soggy because of the pickle juice. Pricey and not worth itMore

Ok...all I have to say is these cookies are ridiculously good. I grew up in Campbell and have driven past Gunthers at least a million of times and have never been in. Of course, once I move away- I learn about the magic cookies this...place is serving. The chocolate chip cookies are seriously unreal. I don't know what they do to make them so good- maybe sprinkle crack in there- because I can't just eat one. lol They're thick, gooey, and just incredible. Now whenever my parents come to visit me, they bring me at least 3 dozen. Don't judge me. I haven't had anything else they serve up- because apparently I'm on a cookie diet- but my parents rave about their sandwiches. It's a deli/cafeteria style place and the service is always fast and friendly. One of my favorite places in San Jose/Campbell!More

I've been here multiple times over multiple decades but today the service and food did not measure up to previous experiences. The pickle with the sandwich was quite small and the service was poor. I had to obtain my own utensils and attention to details...by the staff was lacking.More

I can't say the food was above average. However, very friendly service personnel. Because of the moderate, overcooked food I won't vist this restaurant again.

Background: Family members from California, Maryland and Vermont gathered at Gunther's for an ad hoc, neighborhood evening meal to remember a recently departed loved one, prior to the next day's memorial service. Verdict: Our motley group shared stories while we enjoyed our evening meal at...a neighborhood hang out. There was something for everyone from vegans to vegetarians to meat lovers to stories that needed to be shared.More

I really enjoyed Gunther's. We all had a German specialty for dinner. The red cabbage was quite good. The brats and lamb shank were great. The people are friendly and the service was quick. It's a great neighborhood cafe that happens to serve German food....The lunch sandwiches look good as well. We will be back.More

I love Gunther's! The owner and staff are wonderful, the food is always delicious, and it's a super convenient location. From breakfast omlettes, to corned beef sandwiches, to matzo ball soup, to the outrageously delicious chocolate chip cookies, I find myself craving s Gunther's fix...at least every other week but could easily be talked into it weekly.More

This is my favorite place to get a fresh, moist pastrami sandwich. The meat is warm, very tender, sliced thin and piled high on delicious bread. It is a comfortable foodies dream.

My search for German food on the internet yielded Gunther's restaurant. I found the menu rather limited in the number of main dishes, however, what they had was looked great. The main dishes I remember were lamb shank and Veal Parmesan, both on my like-very-much...list. The lamb shank was exceptional. It was cooked just right and had ample sauce with it that was superb. The shank was more than I could eat even though it tasted great. I had macaroni cheese as a side and it was excellent. Done just right with the cheese topping browned to a golden sheen. The sour kraut was sour kraut. The service was excellent and friendly. What impressed me most was that the owner, Gunther, is the cook. He limits the menu to what he can handle with care. And the food showed that he cared to have it done just right. I recommend it highly when you want great German food in a modest environment.More
