Got students the day after they rotated from back to front-of-house and jittery nerves were apparent! Service was slow but the food was outstanding. Could use a few more bottles of moderately priced wine (although the Ramey Cabernet at $100 was worth it) and a...little more generous pour on a glass of the Schramsberg blanc de blanc!More

We were so pleased with our dinner at the Gatehouse. We met Sven, a few days prior and he was our server for our exquisite meal. The food was excellent and the wine pairings were perfect. A fantastic value!

The students do it all including host, wait on tables, prepare meals...It's very professional in a lovely stone building. The students are enthusiastic and well taught.

Hi gang, Received a gift card I asked for last Christmas from my Secret Santa at the Gatehouse Restaurant on the Culinary Institute of America’s St. Helena campus at the former Christian Brothers Winery. My last visit was 20 yrs ago and because the wonderful...lunch we chose to celebrate my 50th birthday, I wanted to go back. Called for a reservation at their opening time of 11:30 am. We were the only patrons for first 30 mins, we chose the 4 course lunch menu at $42/pp. They specifically don’t allow tipping but will charge the req’d tax and include a 20% gratuity for student benefits. EVERYTHING was cooked to perfection. All food is prepared and served by students and their attention to detail is second to none and I do mean none. We each had a glass of Chardonnay ($8 house wine) which was perfect for our palates. Last time we were here I didn’t feel “stuffed” but rather “fed” when I left after our lunch. This time I was full. We stayed 90 mins and enjoyed all of it. The wait staff explained every dish presented and all the ingredients. They missed nothing !!! Do yourself a favor, get a reservation and eat a great meal prepared by and attended to by hard working, ambitious young people eager to perfect their craft. You will not find this anywhere short of a high-end eating establishment. We’ve eaten at Alice Waters’ Chez Panisse in Berkeley and this place exceeds it. What are you waiting for ??? RichMore

This is the restaurant at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in St Helena. The food is prepared and served by the students at the culinary institute. We have experienced lunch here three times and each time it has been excellent. The menu changes...seasonally. The food is always excellent and presented in a very elegant way. The students do a superb job serving you, explaining each dish as it is presented. You can choose a 3 or 4 course meal, the cost includes the tip.You can also order wine by the glass, bottle or a wine pairing with each course. We added the Charcuterie Board for only $5 per person it was excellent with house made pork kielbasa, pork terrine, pickled vegetables and quince mustard. You should make reservations as they sell out quickly. This is always a great place to experience a delicious meal.More

We enjoyed our dinner here last night partaking in the 3 course menu (we left stuffed!!) consisting of: Starters: Quinoa and Roasted Butternut Squash Salad, and Llano Seco Pork Charcuterie Plate Second Course: we both had Pacific Dungeness Crab Risotto Main: House Made Ricotta and...Bloomsdale Spinach Manicotti and Seared Five Dot Ranch Strip Loin Food was well presented and tasty. Reid and Travis were excellent at the table and the food was spectacular!! We added the pasta course and it was also high level in flavor and technique. All dishes were expertly prepared and seasoned well. Highly recommended for a great meal.

8 of us had dinner- though they couldn’t seat us all together so 2 separate tables near by- the reason... the students at CIA cooked, served and treated us to a fabulous 4 course wine paired meal. 7 students shared their experiences while anxiously awaiting...their upcoming graduation. 14 students were in the kitchen preparing cooking and cleaning the amazing meal. The freshness and honesty of each student made our evening complete, especially during our tour of the kitchen at the end. This was a bucket list checked off. Job well done CIA students looking forward to meeting you again in your own restaurants!!!!More

A friend and I stopped in for lunch and felt we got good value for the price ($42 per person for upscale 4 course menu). The food was delicious and creative. The presentation was great and the choices for each course showed great variety. Be...aware the Gatehouse is not just a restaurant, but a teaching restaurant for the Culinary Institute and your waiters and chef students learning under great chefs. Reservations are recommended. Tip: A lovely gift shop is available at the institute a very short walk away.More

Food, presentation and service exemplary. Restaurant showcases talents of CIA students. Dining room great ambiance, tables placement well placed far apart to enjoy audible conversation without close proximity to other dining patrons. A must return to try other delicious offerings.

The restaurant setting is lovely on the grounds of the Culinary Institute School and the historic winery / wine storage buildings. The dining room is smallish and well appointed with glass doors looking in at the chefs in the kitchen which you are invited to...tour with your waiter. All good! The prix-fixed meal seams reasonable for 3 courses and all was very satisfying from presentation to preparation and palate pleasing. Portion sizes were smallish especially considering there were 3 (not 5) courses. The main course, hangar steak, had three slices of steak and dessert, deconstructed cheesecake, was a nicely presented small dollup that we had expected to share. Similarly, the wine pairing seemed to be on the small side - maybe a half glass per course. Wait staff was generally attentive and plentiful - many servers worked our table which was fortunate since our primary waiter was the least attentive and least knowledgeable of the team. We enjoyed peeking at showcases and the main building itself after dinner. And while we did not leave feeling hungry, we did feel disappointed. With a CIA grad in the family and many meals at (the now renamed) Escoffier Room in Hyde Park, this did not meet expectations.More

We cannot believe this restaurant is not at least in the top five of St. Helena!! We were here on a Friday night and upon arrival, we were worried at the lack of patrons. We found out later that they limit the guests in the...first couple of weeks for the new students so that they are not overwhelmed. We had such a delightful time! The near graduating students are eager to please, very friendly and super professional! We opted for the wine paired three- and four-course dinners. Both of us ordered something different than the other and were able to taste most of the items offered that evening. Not a disappointment in the whole meal! Our first course featured a tomato tartare which was brilliant and my husband loved the fennel cured trout. The second course selections were even better! Freshly made chicken dumplings (potstickers) and the Applewood smoked wild boar ham were so unique! Lastly, my roasted agnolotti with grilled zucchini and quinoa was the best I’ve had outside Piedmont, Italy! My husband loved his 5-Dot striploin. Honestly, this was a incredible, almost-Michelin star experience for half the price! The wines paired perfectly with each course it accompanied! Dessert was a “deconstructed Ambrosia”, featuring homemade marshmallow and caramelized pineapple! There were a couple minor snafus (forgot to give us utensils and a plate dropped in the kitchen) but this happens in some of the best restaurants in the world!! If you are looking for a unique, other than standard Napa dining experience, we can’t recommend this place strongly enough!More
