Shrimp & chips

We ordered our food at the window and then waited for our number to be called. Seating is outside at dirty wooden tables. The day we were there it was too windy to enjoy sitting outside. Loud music from the 1950s and early 60s blared from the speaker as we ate. We both ordered the coconut shrimp & chips. The servings were large enough that I would have been happy to share one serving for the two of us. The shrimp was tasty, with a nice dipping sauce. The fries were just average.

freshly fried crispy-crunchy fish

first time visiting this place with colleagues. We all enjoyed our lunches, the food was tasty. The tables needed a wipe down other than that it was fantastic. I will be back!

Close to the Delta King if you're hungry

Walked to the place as it's really close to the hotel, I ordered a fish sandwich with garlic fries. It was okay, not exactly what I was expecting. I feel like it was more expensive than it should be.

Not as good as it looks …

It looked good and we’d been so looking forward to a clam chowder served like this but it lacked clams and flavour and my partner’s had a piece of a plastic bag in his - he waited until there were no other customers around and then took back what was left of the soup with the plastic and they looked at it. said “oh plastic” and that was it - no apology nothing - like this was perfectly normal.

Not so great

Although busy, this small place is pretty bare with a few tables inside and a few outside. Can't drink beer outside so that limits the patron to the interior which is not particularly pleasant. Tood crowded with the cook right behind you and the food could be a lot better. Family run and they try but it's too much for a couple of people to handle.

We found it was great

Made the decision to eat here while in the old town -no regrets. The battered fish was crunchy although the fish inside was very then. The chips were delicious and the meal was served with tartare sauce and other sauces including tomatoe sauce was available to help yourself. We also had the clam chowder in the bread basket and it was also very tasty. We were here on a Tuesday and it was not very busy so if it was more crowded that could be the reason for the other average reviews.

Hard To Get Excited

We were headed to the Railroad museum and our google for a nearby restaurant led us to Railroad Fish & Chips. It is highly rated by TripAdvisor; I have trouble with the high recommendation. First, recognize that you wait in line to order, order your food and pay before finding your table. The extensive menu is on the board on the wall. Your food is brought to you when prepared. Most of the tables are picnic tables in the shade, but you bus your own table. My wife had the fish & chips, which was a better choice than my oysters & chips. The oysters could have been left in the fryer a few more seconds. The food was hot but there was nothing special about the fries. RFC is easy to find, although the parking spots on this street in Old Sacramento are certainly as small as any I’ve ever seen. There are other shops and restaurants in the area, in addition to the museum.

Typical fish & chips, but a rather large menu

The place was well within walking distance from the museum so we gave it a try. The seating inside is limited but there are plenty of tables outside. We split an order of fish & chips as it seemed like enough to satisfy the two of us. The place is rather rustic and the prices are good. Enjoy

Just so-so

Went here based on all the reviews. We got fish and chips. For $11.99 I would think a drink came with it but no. All they had are canned soda or bottles of water for purchase. Fish was crunchy outside but one of 3 of both of our 3 pieces was mushy inside. Nothing noteworthy and kind of wish we ate somewhere else as this was our only stop to eat in Sacramento. Also it isn’t on the water and all you can see is a patch of grass or one of the parked trains. Based on the map I guess I thought it would be on the water.

Friendly servers, good fish, average chips

I've passed by this place many times and finally decided to try their fish & chips on a Tuesday evening around 7 pm. The fish was better than most places. The chips (fries) were average. I sat at a table outside to enjoy the cool breeze. There are panhandlers, and I was asked for money just as I sat down. There's limited seating inside. Servers are friendly.

Normally Excellent Fish & Chips

We have eaten here probably once a year for the pass few years. Our experience has been that this is a great place for fish & chips. This time was different. Both the fish and the chips were limp. Normally the fish is crisp and almost too hot to eat. This time it was hot but not the good crunchy crisp. Same with the fries. Normally they pass the still good to eat when cold test but this time there was no crisp to the fries. Tartar sauce lacked flavor. Given our past history with Railroad Fish & Chips we will give them another try in hopes that this was just a bad day and not the new normal.

Fresh for you fish and chips

These fish were breaded and cooked to perfection. The chips were just French fries. The location is part of an old railroad depot so limited seating inside but nice picnic type tables on the front porch. The couple running the restaurant were so nice. Like all fried food - a little greasy but not too bad due to the quick fry method. Excellent taste!

Always busy!

We wanted inexpensive but great food. Railroad Fish and Chips is always busy. There are just a few tables inside and outside, but the place is packed for good reason. The food was delicious!
