My wife and I have been looking for a nice place for Sunday breakfast. We have been hunting. Every place in Redding we have been to so far has been haunted by the ghosts of the chuckwagon cooks of the 1870s. The grills are not...clean, the subtle flavor of trace-grease is in everything, and the coffee was a time-travel trip to Maxwell Hell House. So, when we saw that the ratings were generally pretty good we gave it a go. While the place was surprisingly clean and the insides are delightfully cheerful and artistic, the Waffle House over on Athens street in Redding turns to Chuckwagon Redux with your very first bite. Was that actually an egg-based omelet? It didn’t taste like it, and the tomatoes were past their time. Although we asked for bacon, we both got something else, and what I got in there reminded me of why they hang the dead animals in front of the restaurant in China. It is partly because done like that you point at what you are agreeing on will be in the food. I just don’t know what it was and fear that to find out I would have needed a translator. For waffles, go for it. Like so many restaurants in Redding, the Waffle House is haunted by the the ghosts of Ranch Chuckwagons. The population of Redding is changing, and some of us do not want grease as a side dish. Bring a box of mints for after.More
