Delicious salsa. Very large portions. I had two beef tacos and one cheese enchilada. The rancho sauce is different and kind of sweet. It was yummy. The rice and beans were also excellent. The beef in the tacos was like pot roast, very tender. My hubby had a chicken fajita burrito and it was terrific with large white meat chicken... More

This place is a porterville institution. It has been there for 20 years. Fantastic food, family run, great service with a cafeteria style atmostphere. The carne asada is fantastic. The shrimp cocktail is awesome. Their Mole sauce is famous in the area with a slightly sweet taste.

As a customer you would expect to have the wait staff trying to speak English to you, however; I have seen that almost every time I ate at El Tapatio on Orange Ave in Porterville more often than not the wait staff could barely speak English. The cost of the food was compatible to the quantity of food but the... More

Went here on the advice of a friend who said "this is where the locals go for Mexican food." It was a trip! There are two dining rooms - we had to wait about 10 minutes for a table, and were seated in the secondary one, which consists of some booths and a bunch of picnic tables. It was packed... More

We asked at our hotel what the best Mexican restaurant was and they told us "El Tapatio". It was easy to get to and there was a ton of parking. Great family style seating set up plus a wonderful patio. The chips and salsa were amazing. Then we got the food! I had a chicken taco and cheese enchilada --... More

This place is family run and where the locals go, where everyone goes. There homemade salsa is the best. Service is quick. It can be quite loud with party groups and lots of tables. Carne asada is popular. I like their tostada compuesta with quacamole and sour cream. Barbacoa is salty but tender. I've seen margaritas but I think they... More

Very good menudo. Good service. Coffee kept coming. Wife ordered a medium bowl of pozole. Good flavor and plenty of meat. We'll definitely return.

Okay: it was clear that we weren't going to have a fine dining experience in Porterville. Plan B was to have tasty food with the locals. TripAdvisor and the motel clerk both pointed us to El Tapatio. On this Friday night, it was filled with a mostly local crowd. We had to wait only a few minutes for our table.... More

I love coming here for there red sauce on their enchiladas. Some people think it's too sweet, but I love it. I just found out that I can buy the sauce to go. The rellanos are to die for, and you can tell the peppers didn't come from a can. Free chips and salsa are good, but I like my... More
