Description: Giuseppe’s Cucina Italiana was founded in 1988 by Giuseppe DiFronzo as a...
Giuseppe’s Cucina Italiana was founded in 1988 by Giuseppe DiFronzo as a senior project upon graduation from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Joe, “Giuseppe”, is a son of Italian immigrants who along with the majority of their family emigrated from Bari, Puglia. Puglia is the heel of the boot region of Italy, otherwise known as the California of Italy.Joe grew up in Southern California where he learned his craft working for his four uncles who all owned Italian Delicatessens and bakeries. After fishing in Alaska on a crab boat upon graduation from Cal Poly, Joe returned to Pismo Beach and started his first 8-table restaurant in the old Landmark Hotel in Pismo. Three years later he moved to the historic Plessas Tavern, a Pismo landmark since 1921. This institution fed the likes of Eleanor Roosevelt, Bob Hope, Clark Gable, and many dignitaries and stars traveling between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Locals were thrilled to see the eatery reopen and thrive for the last 24 years! Today Giuseppe’s boasts an Italian deli and bakery across the street at 800 Price Street as well. Giuseppe also opened a sister restaurant in 2005 in downtown San Luis Obispo named “Palazzo Giuseppe.” Giuseppe spends his pastime cultivating his family farm from which he produces his 15 year old “DiFronzo Vineyards” wines, featured in his eateries. In addition to wine, he grows, cooks, and serves his organic heirloom fruits, vegetables, and herbs with pride and confidence.

We ate here several days ago. We arrived at 5:30, and there were clearly many unreserved tables in the restaurant. They seated us in the bar. This seems to be a favorite hangout for the local crowd. The food was good, although a bit pricey, and we did enjoy watching the locals interact.

This place deserves six stars. The food is wonderful, the service friendly and unhurried. On our latest visit Monday night we were seated in one of the side rooms which was very nice. Two glasses of the Difronzo syrah were terrific, as was the red and golden beet salad we split. The Vincenzo pizza is excellent and a good size... More

We visited Guiseppe's for my birthday. We had a very surely waiter who treated us as if we were non-existent because we didn't order alcohol. He didn't check to see how our food was, if we needed more bread, and then after waiting more than 20 minutes after we completed our salads came and admitted he forgot what we ordered... More

Giuseppe's is simply the best. I could probably eat nothing but the bread and olive oil appetizer they serve with every meal. Rich combination of olive oil, parmesan cheese and garlic served with thin slices of lightly sliced bread. Mmmmmmm! The steaks are great but so is the pasta so deciding what to order is very difficult. We had to... More

The complimentary bread basket is served with a Parmesan garlic spread that is infectious...it is so hard to resist. The variety of salads run the gambit from thinly sliced filet mignon topped with arugula and diced tomatoes to butter lettuce with candied walnuts and avocado. And the dressings are excellent. Pasta dish was rich and savory and meant to be... More

Giuseppe's does not take reservations, but we walked an about 7:15 PM on a Wednesday evening and were seated immediately. The Caesar Salad was unusual in that instead of the usual cut up Romaine leaves it was served with the Romaine leaves uncut. The Caesar dressing was average, but the plate was not chilled. The lasagna was excellent and the... More

Giuseppe's Italian restaurant was recommended to us by friends in Atascadero. Since we were in Pismo Beach for the day we decided to try the restaurant here instead of in San Luis Obispo. We arrived with our two grandchildren at 4:30 on Sunday and were seated immediately in a nice, large booth. The waitstaff was very nice, especially the busboy.... More
