About
“Eat well, live better” is the motto of chef Johannes Bacher, whose award-winning European cuisine has been satisfying discerning taste buds in downtown Palm Springs for more than two decades. Bacher lends a taste of his native Kössen — the small town in Tirol, Austria, where Bacher was raised — to dishes such as cheese spätzeln (housemade noodles in fontina and Gruyère cheeses) and his signature wiener schnitzel, which was featured in 1,000 Foods to Eat Before You Die, a book listing the world’s best restaurants. The upscale yet relaxed dining experience pairs with a comprehensive wine list, featuring half-bottles as well as 3-ounce tasting pours, and trendy, Euro-inspired décor. “Simply the Best of the Best.” Zagat-rated. Voted Best Continental Restaurant, Best Martini, and Best Romantic Dining by readers of Palm Springs Life.

Lovely atmosphere. Specialized menu of schnitzels. Really nice for something different. Large portion served with roasted potatoes and traditional accompaniments of cranberry sauce and cucumbers in dill sauce. Excellent service. Excellent selection of wine by the glass, beautifully served.

This was a truly great meal and experience. Nice ambience, good buzz, excellent post and superb server. Beth made the experience even a little nicer.
My wife had the duck in a honey orange sauce, which she thought was one of the best she’s ever had. That says a lot as we’ve had duck throughout Europe in Asia The sauce, focused on honey, orange, and a little tarragon. Interesting, unusual, and it works. The red cabbage was terrific as well.
I had the Wienerschnitzel. I had planed to have the original style, but was convinced to have the lemon butter and capers. What a good choice. It was a terrific dish. I have schnitzel in Germany, Austria, and Italy. This was terrific.
I highly recommend this restaurant.

This is a revisit review from my earlier one. We were back recently with out of town guests and are happy to see that the quality has remained. It continues to have some of the best service and food in Palm Springs. Again we found the portions large and rich, so be prepared to take some home in a box. Surprisingly, it is not one of the more expensive restaurants in Palm Springs given the shocking increase in prices throughout the city in the past two pandemic years. I am not sure why some call it a tourist trap since it is immensely popular with residents and always difficult to find last minute reservations. The front dining room was filled entirely with locals the night we dined. There is a difference in where you sit. The back room and front patio are not as pleasant. You can also dine at the bar, although I have been told that menu has been reduced. It is a smaller restaurant and they are sticklers for reservations. This might explain some people's negative experience when walking in without reservations.

This restaurant ticks all the boxes. A very warm welcome from all the team in delightful, tasteful surroundings. I loved the simplicity of the freshly polished apple as a table decoration. Our dinner was absolutely delicious and prepared / cooked to perfection. The wine suggested by Johannes who visited our table was the perfect compliment to our menu choice. I loved Johannes’ response when he recommended the wine, “if you don’t like this suggestion, I’ll drink it myself!” All the team had a pleasant and humorous manner, served our meal with experience and professionalism. Johannes shared impressive knowledge of many international cuisines that our table had enjoyed in the past - it really was an absolute pleasure to be there. I have to add, this was one of those memorable meals that you never forget. The food, the wine, the service and the setting were all perfect. I look forward to recommending this place and returning soon.

We have been fans of Johannes for years - however, the escargot is not as good as in the past. The escargot was served on a flat plate (no indentations) with a sauce that is very similar to that served with their bread......both green and tasting too alike. We missed the earlier preparation and taste.

The food was good. The service was….uneven. Our reservation was at 845. We were seated and were given water, but we didn’t receive menus until 915. Our orders were taken at 930. Our food didn’t come until 1015. Then, at 1045, as our dessert was brought to the table, they turned the lights up and started stacking the chairs. We had wine in the bottle, but they came to take the glasses and asked if we were done with the dessert that had just been placed on the table. We ate and drank as quickly as we could, but we still ended up having to leave before we finished. Four other tables had the same experience. We did not take long to order, nor did we linger over our meals, but I didn’t like having to leave before we finished. The cheese spaetzlen, our appetizer, was delicious. I’m glad we didn’t have to leave that behind like we did our dessert and wine.

Our first visit to Johannes last evening after a sunset jeep trek to Joshua Tree National Park was a refreshing finish to a wonderful day. We began with a half-bottle of Rombauer, which was smooth and cool. Our appetizer was a brussel sprout salad that was light, flavorful and filling. For mains, we both chose schnitzel, since this was our first visit to Johannes. The chicken schnitzel was prepared with a lemon caper sauce and the wiener schnitzel was prepared with mushrooms in a red wine sauce. Both servings covered most of our plates: needless to say, the portions were sizable, and both were covered in lightly grilled sliced potatoes. The schnitzels were tender, toothsome and utterly delicious! Johannes has perfected the art of preparing schnitzel, so if you are in the mood for schnitzel, by the way, it is NOT the only item on their wide-ranging menu, you have to stop in and give them a try. Our wait staff were spot on, timely, not intrusive but very attentive. We have added Johannes to our list of go-to restaurants when we return to Palm Springs and so should you! Thank you for a terrific meal and a wonderful evening.

Lovely, continental themed menu with options for any palate, well beyond the desert’s best schnitzel. Diverse range of appetizers and entrees were prepared with flavorful, high quality ingredients, then plated with TLC and delivered with professional, attentive service. Special shout-out to the amazing subtle yet powerful cocktails prepared by resident mixologist Stephanie the Martini Jeannie!

Friends has dined here previously and suggested we go here for our final night in town. We made sure to get an early reservation (6:00 pm) so that we could get a quiet table away from the more boisterous bar area.
Our server was excellent. Very attentive and helpful with menu selections. I went with the Papa's version of the Weiner schnitzel but our group also had duck, the fish special and the steak special. All entrees came out promptly after the server cleared the two soups and a salad.
It was a delightful, sophisticated evening with friends. Just the kind of experience you want on your last night in town.

We usually treat ourselves to a nice dinner on our last day of vacation. I was a little reluctant after reading the reviews about rude staff. We experienced the exact opposite. Fine dining at its best. Everyone treated us well, (attentive but not intrusive), the drinks were well crafted, and the soup of the day with the crab was delicious with great depth of flavor. My duck was good, not great, and my husband enjoyed his pork tenderloin with apples. Next time we may try the schnitzel menu. Desserts nothing special, we had the assortment. The atmosphere was what made this such a nice experience. Thank you to the staff who did their jobs so well.

It was my first time there and we got recommended it by our hotel and since Im Austrian I was curious to experience it. In the times of covid we were only able to pick up the christmas dinner. We took a 2 course meal for 150$ for 2 people, included a 20% service charge for a take out meal. My boyfriend liked the soup but his chicken schnitzel was really average with 5 tiny potatoes and cucumber salad. Since I didnt want to eat meat I got recommended the thai curry but I didnt like it, so I was really looking forward to the apple strudel but to be honest I was very disappointed too and ended up not eating anything because it didnt taste like one at all. Overall it was very disappointing, average austrian and overpriced.

I will start by stating that we completely understand that if you dont have reservations for one of the popular restaurants in downtown Palm Springs on a Saturday night, you'll have a challenge finding a table. We get that so we cruise around and to various resaurants until we find a table. What is frustrating is rude inconsiderate entitled hosts. We've never been to Johannes in the 10 years of living in Palm Springs. We stopped in last night at about 7:30 which we know is a busy time. Johannes was busy but the front bar area was fairly chill. We asked the host for a two top and there wasnt any available. Fine...all good. We said we'd happily sit at the bar if available. He said he had a reservation parked at the bar while their table was clearing up. It would be about a 15 minute wait and then we could have two at the bar. He said to go take a stroll around the neighborhood and stop back in. He even took our phone number and said he would call. great. We thought. We returned 15 minutes later after no phone call and discovered the bar area all filled. We asked about our two seats and he looked at us like he had never seen and sniffed at us that he had people waiting there for their tables to be cleared for seating. he said it would be about 15 minutes and to wait. We politely reminded him that he had taken our number for seating. He than got dismissive and pissy and said that we just had to wait. At this point, I wont be treated rudely by a host or staff of a restaurant. I simply said that waiting was not fair and we would just go elsewhere. He retorted..."good luck". Luckily, we left and had an AMAZING dinner at LG's Steakhouse. Their staff is perfection and the food is top notch. We will never go to Johannes again. Rude front of house staff. We know the owners of Johannes wont really care about a couple patrons turned away which is telling.

Once again are visit to Johannes did not disappoint. We went this past Saturday evening with some good friends who live in Palm Springs. Whenever we travel from Dallas, we make it a point to always dine here.
Our appetizers include escargot and a ménage à trois seafood sampler. Both were outstanding and prepared us for the main course. We both decided on the Barramundi fish entre as it's one of our favorites. It was prepared perfectly to which we both cleaned our plates.
We did not have room for any deserts this trip, but the coffee was a perfect way to end the nights with our good friends.
Don't miss the experience of dining here when in Palm Springs.

We shared the beet salad with pistachios, grapefruit and feta, excellently paired and to die for taste. We ordered the salmon and jaeger schnitzel. Both were excellent and cooked to perfection. My husband raved about the salmon being the best he ever ate for 2 days! It is an upscale restaurant, but the food was beautifully plated and tasty. The schnitzel was not heavily breaded. the salmon was served on a generous portion of spinach with small rounded potatoes and sauce on the side. The schnitzel came with fingerling potatoes and I would definitely order it again. Best of all was the superb service we received from our waitress.
You dinitely need to make reservations at least 1-2 weeks ahead to get a good time.

From the moment we walked in the door until leaving, this was a unusually fantastic dining experience. The host and our water made our dinner fun. The food….not enough adjectives to describe. The meatball appetizer, Wiener schnitzel with lemon caper sauce, as well as the profiterole dessert, were excellent. And the presentation! Wow. We will definitely be back!
