“Eat well, live better” is the motto of chef Johannes Bacher, whose award-winning European cuisine has been satisfying discerning taste buds in downtown Palm Springs for more than two decades. Bacher lends a taste of his native Kössen — the small town in Tirol, Austria, where Bacher was raised — to dishes such as cheese spätzeln (housemade noodles in fontina and Gruyère cheeses) and his signature wiener schnitzel, which was featured in 1,000 Foods to Eat Before You Die, a book listing the world’s best restaurants. The upscale yet relaxed dining experience pairs with a comprehensive wine list, featuring half-bottles as well as 3-ounce tasting pours, and trendy, Euro-inspired décor. “Simply the

The food was good. The service was….uneven. Our reservation was at 845. We were seated and were given water, but we didn’t receive menus until 915. Our orders were taken at 930. Our food didn’t come until 1015. Then, at 1045, as our dessert was...brought to the table, they turned the lights up and started stacking the chairs. We had wine in the bottle, but they came to take the glasses and asked if we were done with the dessert that had just been placed on the table. We ate and drank as quickly as we could, but we still ended up having to leave before we finished. Four other tables had the same experience. We did not take long to order, nor did we linger over our meals, but I didn’t like having to leave before we finished. The cheese spaetzlen, our appetizer, was delicious. I’m glad we didn’t have to leave that behind like we did our dessert and wine.More

Lovely, continental themed menu with options for any palate, well beyond the desert’s best schnitzel. Diverse range of appetizers and entrees were prepared with flavorful, high quality ingredients, then plated with TLC and delivered with professional, attentive service. Special shout-out to the amazing subtle yet...powerful cocktails prepared by resident mixologist Stephanie the Martini Jeannie!More

Friends has dined here previously and suggested we go here for our final night in town. We made sure to get an early reservation (6:00 pm) so that we could get a quiet table away from the more boisterous bar area. Our server was excellent....Very attentive and helpful with menu selections. I went with the Papa's version of the Weiner schnitzel but our group also had duck, the fish special and the steak special. All entrees came out promptly after the server cleared the two soups and a salad. It was a delightful, sophisticated evening with friends. Just the kind of experience you want on your last night in town.More

We usually treat ourselves to a nice dinner on our last day of vacation. I was a little reluctant after reading the reviews about rude staff. We experienced the exact opposite. Fine dining at its best. Everyone treated us well, (attentive but not intrusive), the...drinks were well crafted, and the soup of the day with the crab was delicious with great depth of flavor. My duck was good, not great, and my husband enjoyed his pork tenderloin with apples. Next time we may try the schnitzel menu. Desserts nothing special, we had the assortment. The atmosphere was what made this such a nice experience. Thank you to the staff who did their jobs so well.More

This is a revisit review from my earlier one. We were back recently with out of town guests and are happy to see that the quality has remained. It continues to have some of the best service and food in Palm Springs. Again we found...the portions large and rich, so be prepared to take some home in a box. Surprisingly, it is not one of the more expensive restaurants in Palm Springs given the shocking increase in prices throughout the city in the past two pandemic years. I am not sure why some call it a tourist trap since it is immensely popular with residents and always difficult to find last minute reservations. The front dining room was filled entirely with locals the night we dined. There is a difference in where you sit. The back room and front patio are not as pleasant. You can also dine at the bar, although I have been told that menu has been reduced. It is a smaller restaurant and they are sticklers for reservations. This might explain some people's negative experience when walking in without reservations.More

Maître d was this arrogant man who gave us the worst table in the back right by the service area while two tables at the front area were available but according to him reserved. Ps those tables never filled up!

We booked a table for 2 about 2 weeks ahead for a Wednesday evening. When we arrived at 5:20 for our 5:30 reservation, we were placed not in the dining room but in this little hallway next to the very loud kitchen and the server's...station. No atmosphere except noisy and crowded. The tables are even turned 45 degrees to allow the servers to get by. My husband very nicely asked to be seated in the dining room. The man seating us told him brusquely, "No, I have all the reservations planned out and that is your table." When we then pointed out that there were only a couple tables occupied at that time in the dining room, he gave us the deep breath and then "Let me go over this again. Those people have had reservations for months ahead, and this is your table." We have never seen that level of smugness and just plain disregard for customer service. If he had been patient and kind, and just said I'm sorry, this is all that we have available because we are so busy tonight, we might have stayed. But because of his rudeness, we left. If you are planning to go to this restaurant, just be aware that you may be placed in a bad area (read the other one ball reviews, we weren't the only ones), and that the host is so unkind.More

I will start by stating that we completely understand that if you dont have reservations for one of the popular restaurants in downtown Palm Springs on a Saturday night, you'll have a challenge finding a table. We get that so we cruise around and to...various resaurants until we find a table. What is frustrating is rude inconsiderate entitled hosts. We've never been to Johannes in the 10 years of living in Palm Springs. We stopped in last night at about 7:30 which we know is a busy time. Johannes was busy but the front bar area was fairly chill. We asked the host for a two top and there wasnt any available. Fine...all good. We said we'd happily sit at the bar if available. He said he had a reservation parked at the bar while their table was clearing up. It would be about a 15 minute wait and then we could have two at the bar. He said to go take a stroll around the neighborhood and stop back in. He even took our phone number and said he would call. great. We thought. We returned 15 minutes later after no phone call and discovered the bar area all filled. We asked about our two seats and he looked at us like he had never seen and sniffed at us that he had people waiting there for their tables to be cleared for seating. he said it would be about 15 minutes and to wait. We politely reminded him that he had taken our number for seating. He than got dismissive and pissy and said that we just had to wait. At this point, I wont be treated rudely by a host or staff of a restaurant. I simply said that waiting was not fair and we would just go elsewhere. He retorted..."good luck". Luckily, we left and had an AMAZING dinner at LG's Steakhouse. Their staff is perfection and the food is top notch. We will never go to Johannes again. Rude front of house staff. We know the owners of Johannes wont really care about a couple patrons turned away which is telling.More

I decided to book a last minute table based on feedback I have heard. I was not disappointed. The staff are friendly, welcoming and attentive. The drinks (dirty vodka martini with extra olives) was heavenly and of course the food is sublime. I have the...special potato leek soup with dungeons crab and the Schnitzel. The Pork Schnitzel was succulent and moist while maintaining its puffed extra crunchy pan fried shell. I highly recommend this place as I am still craving that Schnitzel.More

We had the date salad and tuna tartare as starters. Both were very good and refreshing. The main courses we had are Hager schnitzel and half duck. Wow! The schnitzel so soft inside and crunchy outside with amazing mushroom sauce. The dill cucumber salad that...came with it was also very good. The duck dish was massive. Super generous portions. The waiter Raymond was such a highlight. So friendly and sweet!More
