Max's is just a block off the main street of delightful Pacific Grove. We were there on a quiet Sunday night after a long day in the car, and our hosts immediately made us feel at home. We ordered sand dabs and duck, for each of which the menu noted 'prepared our way'. Each dish was understatedly elegant, and the... More

The atmosphere is simple, elegant and relaxed. This is due, in part, to the service, led by the wife/co-owner, who is charming, efficient and very pleasant. The food was superb, especially the tempura ahi roll and tempura prawns. My husband and I agreed we would have been quite happy with three orders of each to share for dinner. Incredible! The... We were tentative when we walked in, as there was only one other couple with a child present. The restaurant is nicely decorated and pleasing to the eye. The hostess was extremely gracious and nice (Japanese descent we think), and set us up with large wonderful crunchy crust sourdough bread rolls and a balsamic/olive oil dip. My wife, son, and... We came to Max's with 5 adults, 1 child and 1 toddler to celebrate our 45 th anniversary. We had a nice quiet table away from other customers and the waitress was very accommodating to our requests. I had grilled Sand Dabs that were cooked perflectly with a delicious lemon caper sauce. Everyone else liked their food including the kids.... More

Recommended by the hotel and lived up to it. Lovely husband/wife team with very tasty food. Don't be put off by the name. It's a yummy Japanese infused meal and nothing like a grill. Quality and good value.

Max's is now a tradition with us -- we drive there at least once a year from 100 miles away; have done so now for 5 years. This April 26 we celebrated a birthday with Butternut squash ravioli and Dungeness crab cakes and Hawaiian mango mousse cake for one of us, and a garden salad, pot roast and chocolate mousse... Upon arriving at Max's, we realized this was not really the cool, modern Asian fusion restaurant we were hoping for. We stayed anyway, and found that it is a good, very reasonably priced restaurant with some nice food choices, in a setting which could use some updating. The paint color was a muted mauve, and the artwork was very Asian... More

I don't really like writing negative reviews, especially of a small family owned restaurant run by nice people. Other people like it more. My wife and I try it every two or three years. We order different things but always come away feel it was average. Doubt if we. Will go back. Sorry.

We were glad we chose Max's, off Lighthouse in Pacific Grove, because the Monterey area was extremely busy with spring break crowds. Although we had reservations, we didn't need them, and we were greeted and seated immediately. Our server, Lasandra (sp?) was sweet and helpful, answering all of our questions about he beverages and food. I ordered one of the... More

Returned here on this trip and validated our first experince. A small family on owned restaurant serving freshly prepared American style food at a reasonable price. They offer a three course meal for $25 which includes soup or salad, choice of entree, and desert OR a glass of wine. Hard to beat, especially given the quality and service.
