Went for dinner. Did not know what to expect. A Michelin starred restaurant in Oakland? Well, I was not disappointed. Eight taster menu bites. Each one better than the last. My friends and I actually stopped talking when tasting the smoked vanilla chocolate truffle! One bite, and we looked at each other! To die for! It's a very small restaurant,... More

Very professional service and great food. Each single presentation was a real piece of art so delicate and beautiful and then arrives the second surprise, the taste ... all so delightful and tastefully creative. The wine was good. It is an unforgettable great experience. I would have maybe expected a much nicer space for a two stars restaurant ... It... More

So, we went to Commis in Oakland for a joint birthday celebration. This is a two-Michelin-star restaurant which features an 8-course small-plate dinner. French-style cuisine with a strongly Japanese influence. Like a kaiseki place with European service order. This place is fantastic. At the same level of quality as Le Bernardin in NY (our other fave), I would say, but... More

I visited Commis on Saturday evening with my long-time dining partner. I had done my research on the location so I knew pretty much what to expect. I had read another review about the food being salty. I knew the portions would be small. I guess I expected greatness to go along with the two Michelin stars...I did not experience... More

I think people in Bay Area are getting very little for their money when it comes to great gourmet food. Like most of the new trend of "innovative" restaurants in Bay Area, Commis is trying too hard and offering too little in return. $500 final bill for two with wine paring is not cheap especially considering the wines were not... I had quite gone off tasting menus after a dinner that stretched to a painful almost 4 hours, but our dinner at Commis was proof that when well done, tasting menus can be amazingly good. Commis called about a week prior to our reservation to reconfirm our appointment and to check if there were any allergies. I shared that my... More

Visited in a group for dinner Commis is located on Piedmont in Oakland, on a strip of road peppered with various restaurants/bars frequented by the working neighborhood. Physically, it is tiny venue--a rectangular space featuring a small "open kitchen" of sorts in the middle where I believe they do some finishing work and plating. I am doubtful the restaurant can... The only city on the West Coast of America that Michelin rates is the San Francisco Bay area. To locals of Babylon by the Bay this is just. To those in Southern California who were last visited by Michelin seemingly a decade ago, this is crazy. The middle level restaurant scene there is exciting and recognized by national food critics... Been wanting to try Commis and final got there last weekend. It's a first-rate experience, perhaps the best in the entire East Bay. Physically, it's a little smaller place than I imagined but also longer, so it's about right size-wise.. It's a gem. The food, service and ambiance were off the charts great. Being as we are food and wine... More

Got there at 8:20 for our 8:15 reservation. Place is a little difficult to spot at night and also had to look for street parking. "Sorry, your table won't be available for another 10 minutes." "Is there someplace we can wait?" "There is a bar a few doors down." "Could you text or call us when our table is ready?"... More
