Enjoyed the taste and texture of each dish. A mix of European, Asian and American flavors. Tapas size and we were full at the end. Service is excellent. A must try.

More like 1 1/2 bites to be generous. And not just in size but composition and content. My first disappointing meal featured an egg yolk with a tablespoon of dashi. My next disappointing meal, over a year later, same dish. What the H. Frankly with the water crisis, do we really need 8 changes of dishes and utensils? Who has... More

The food was delicious, fresh, local, seasonal and out of this world creative. The service was polite and informative with each of the tasting menu courses explained thoroughly, and the atmosphere was super cozy, even on a ultra-rainy night. I really couldn't complain about a single aspect. Of course all of this excellence does come with a pretty hefty price... More

This is where you go in the Bay Area for a unique pleasurable dining experience. It is small and quiet, so a dinner and conversation is not out of the question, but there are thousands of places one can go to dine and talk. This is serious gourmet fare meant to be enjoyed and enhanced by those sharing the experience.... More

If you like having small bites of food--and being interrupted and told what your food by your waiter with each and every small bite then this is the place for you. Don't get me wrong. The food is good, the service is good, but it's not an enjoyable experience and it's very costly. Travel across the street to Mistura Peruvian... More

At Commis, innovative preparations and beautiful presentation combine for an exceptional dining experience. Snuggled near the perennial favorite Bay Wolf on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland, Commis' understated storefront belies the thoughtfully executed food that lies within. The dining room is colored in muted tones with unadorned walls, setting the stage for the elegant food to be the star. With its... More

We were visiting the East Bay for a graduation from CAL and as such were including some of the top local restaurants in on the act as well, including Commis, which is loosely translated as ‘junior chef’. Clearly, chef James Syhabout is anything but a junior chef as when we visited (May 2015) Commis had 1 Michelin Star, which was... More

Commis is a very small (~20 seat) fine dining restaurant focused on haut-cuisine versions of California dining with high quality ingredients artfully combined and presented. The menu is prix-fixe only. No a-la-carte. What makes the experience outstanding is the the humility and lack of fussiness of the staff, from the Chef down. The kitchen is tiny but immaculately kept with... More

Although I'm not a food expert, I have been to a few of the Michelin stars awarded restaurants and this is one of my favorites. Located in the Piedmont Avenue neighborhood of Oakland, is by no means your neighborhood restaurant. You could travel from anywhere in the World and make this your restaurant destination ( and go for a walk... More

Went there for our 6th Anniversary. We had 545pm reservation, got there 20 minutes early and was sat right away. The restaurant has no air conditioning. What 1 star restaurant has no AC. We were so uncomfortable and miserable. To make matters worse, on the tasting menu was a hot soup called Tissane (button mushrooms). My husband couldn't finish it.... More
