Came here after a visit to the aquarium. Very good burger with yummy fries. Located in a strip mall so not the greatest atmosphere but nice to support local entrepreneurs. Food served on paper plates with plastic utensils. We enjoyed the meal and would go...back.More

Strip mall restaurant with interior seating that is now off limits due to the pandemic. They have converter several parking places into outdoor dining with several picnic tables. The list of 1/2 lb burgers have creative toppings as are the specialty shakes. Fries are average...thickness. A burger, shake and fries run about $25. If you have kids I suggest the new In and Out several miles away. No smiles or charm.More

We went for Burgers at American Burger in Monterey. This is a cute place to go with lots of fun things to see while waiting for our take out order. We very much liked our burgers. I had the Hawaiian; my husband the Red White...and Blue. The hamburgers came with fries. For our drinks, my husband enjoyed their Stella and I liked their ginger ale. Service was very good.More

Came in on a Friday night and was the only person in the place. Set up like a retro diner, the room is a fun place to sit; there are even books and games to play at the table. Had a burger and fries with...a Coke from a can for $20 (including a tip). The burger was cooked well and was tasty. The fries were decent fries. There was nothing that had that "wow" factor. It was a solid burger and fries, but I am not sure if was worth the cost. Would I come back? It was my third attempt at finding a good burger that evening and my top two were either closed for renovations or had a line out the door. It would keep it as a decent fall back in the future.More

I stopped in here in hopes of finding an awesome burger. I ordered the uncle Sam burger it was good but not great I also upgraded to onion rings hoping for a nice homemade one just pre-made and not great. The service was good and...the atmosphere was fine with all the music posters and stuff I would think some music playing would have been nice.More

Not really impressed with the burgers here. Went with the Pineapple burger, sweet potato fries, and a chocolate shake. The burger was pretty sloppy and not that tasty. The sweet potato fries were really good. Chocolate shake was kind of runny and tasted like melted...ice cream. The restaurant itself was pretty cool and had a game of beer cap checkers and tic-tac-toe on the table, which was nice. Other than that, nothing really exceptional about this burger place.More

American Burger is easy to overlook because it is in little strip mall and relatively unassuming from the outside. The co-owners were husband and wife. She was also waitress and exuded warmth and hospitality. She was very engaging, friendly and helpful with the simple yet...traditional American malt-shop type fare. The hamburgers are terrific and there is a wide selection of signature hamburgers. They have other meals including salads. The husband and co-owner is the cook. When he saw us squeezing a nearly empty bottle of ketchup, without asking, he came over with a new bottle for us. The décor is 1950s – 60s and that genre of music is played in the background. This is a wonderful place to eat. We highly recommend it. It is not expensive. It is fun and very good hamburgers.More

Very reasonably priced and good burgers. Atmosphere was great, promoting reading and music. Service was great, and our server was a lovely lady. I had the bacon avocado burger, son had bacon cheesebuger, hubby had Elvis burger and daughter had classic cheeseburger. They all come...with fries, but hubby upgraded to rings. All were great. Bacon was crispy. It is located in a little strip center. The only thing I didn't like was that you couldn't take a book home, so I settled for taking a picture of one that sounded interesting so I can find it here. I didn't have one to trade for it anyway.More

We searched for “best burger on the Monterey Peninsula” and American Burger came up at the top of the list. Three adults and one toddler arrived after a fun but exhausting afternoon at the Aquarium. We weren’t sure what would come first—the food or the...melt down (from anyone of us). It was only a 6 minute walk from the Aquarium but we moved the car. They have parking!!! Our burgers were made with fresh ingredients. The fries were tasty. The sodas come in cans with glasses of ice. This was the only retraction from an otherwise excellent diner experience. The service was great. The atmosphere will make any family happy to relax and enjoy the rock n roll. Soccer was playing on the tv. We were fully satisfied with our meals and had a great time together.More

Big, comfy seats, plenty of space around the tables, table service and a good choice of tasty burgers at a good price. Well worth the short walk up from the crowds in Cannery Row.

American Burger isn't just my favorite place locally, it's one of the best burgers I've ever had. Bacon is properly crispy, patty is seared, toppings are crisp and fresh. I have dreams about the curly fries. The restaurant itself is covered with classic Americana and...has a warm atmosphere. The owners are wonderful people as well. Very attentive and quick service! My favorite burger place in Monterey by a long shot.More

Almost lost in a strip mall on busy Lighthouse Ave, American Burger is identified by a simple red lettered sign in front. The interior looks as if it has not been redone since first opened, but is clean and uncluttered. I had a simple grilled...cheese sandwich with fries which was as good if not better than more expensive places I've been. This is a nice family owned business that serves solid fresh food.More

Decor was fine. Food choice very limited, service bad (10 mins to order, 15 to get our drinks and 30 to get our very average food of two burgers and a “Costco” hot dog). And all that for a $45. Some people are very lucky to...be in business that keep them afloat for nothing. Don’t waste your time or money.More

I had the classic burger, fries/onion rings. I All of these were very good. Dinner prices for the burgers and fries is around $12-13. Great prices for the area when you want a family/budget friendly restaurant. They have quite a variety of hamburgers to try....Service was good as well as the atmosphere. Onion rings were great - made from real onions vs frozen. Burger was made fresh. Parking is limited in the lot but there is parking on the street. I will definitely be back.More
