I know people call Dick's Place a dive bar and that infers it's a bit rough but actually it's more like a good neighbourhood bar. No frills, no nonsense. People drop by for a few looseners after work and late at night it attracts the...drinking crowd. But we liked the place and the locals. What a view out to sea as well.More
We walked out of the hotel Mendocino into Dicks place and they couldn’t be more different. Dicks place was going off, the beers were flowing and everyone was charged up and having a ball. When we stopped by this place in past years, it seemed like they had more tables in the place. The bartender was not very friendly and it was hard to know how to get a drink. Finally, i squeezed up to the bar and was...able to order. I like checking out local dive bars, but do love friendly service and tip accordingly. This is not the place to go if you want friendly, at least not that day.More
In any place I visit, I find a favorite bar (in Mendocino, I found two, the other being Patterson's Pub). In Key West, it's the Green Parrot and in Portland, Me., it's J.'s Oysters. No food, but they seem to have a happy hour of...sorts where one of the staff grills up hot dogs on a skillet. Dick's fronts on Main Street so through its front windows you can see the Mendocino headlands, the sunlight comes in and you don't feel like you are in some kind of dark dive bar. Customers and bartenders seem to be in endless conversation. I encountered mostly locals.Great place to drink. I clicked "terrible" for the food rating, only because it doesn't have any. strong drinks, no atmosphere, and locals....... what more do you want? They will serve free bar food if you want to live on the wild side.
We went here after dinner for drinks and we had a blast! Sat at the bar drinking whiskey and soaking up the atmosphere which was great. Lovely bar staff, music, dogs and laughter! Perfect 👌🏼

A proper dive bar with a view of the ocean? Don't get much better than that. If I wanted a drink, I'd go to Patterson's Pub. If I wanted to party, I'd come here.
It's loud. It's funky. But serves great drinks and is friendly. What else could you want in a dive bar? Plus you can walk outside to great views.
We were looking for a pub to relax in during our stay at The Seagull Inn. We stumbled across Dick's Place, and loved the atmosphere there. We sat next to an artist's model of the pub as it was in 2012, and appreciated the attention...to detail. The "resident transient" in the model was actually sitting in the exact spot depicted in the model! The bartender was a bit gruff at first (I think he was from New York originally), but responded to my Scottish charm by recommending a lager called Anderson Valley Gold. This is now my favorite beer, and I am grateful to him for introducing me.More
