Ah, gather 'round, folks, for the tale of our unforgettable adventure at Don Ruben's Mexican Restaurant! Now, let me tell you, this was no ordinary dining experience – it was the stuff of legends, the kind you'll cherish for years to come. On that fateful...day of July 19, 2023, our brave family decided to embark on a culinary journey to Don Ruben's, the famed establishment that promises a gastronomic extravaganza like no other. Little did we know what awaited us within those spicy walls. As we settled at our table, our taste buds tingling with anticipation, we ordered an assortment of dishes with chicken – because who wouldn't want a grand poultry spectacle, right? The chef's skills in reusing poultry were truly mesmerizing. Some chicken pieces were fresh, straight from the farm, while others had been crisped to a degree that could put Dorito's chips to shame. Bravo, chef! How innovative to turn leftovers into culinary masterpieces! But hold on, the surprises didn't end there! The soft drink glasses, oh, how they glistened with a questionable cleanness! We couldn't help but wonder if they had a unique seasoning of their own – perhaps a pinch of yesterday's cola mixed with the essence of the day before? Ah, refreshing! Oh, but the real delight awaited us on the next day. It was like a treasure hunt, but instead of seeking gold, we searched frantically for gas stations to stop at, so we could release the liquefied meals from the day before. What an exhilarating ride it was! You haven't truly bonded as a family until you've endured a collective stomach ache and quest for restrooms. But let me tell you, the colon cleansing feature – that was the highlight of it all! For a mere $15.99 per person, we achieved a level of intestinal detoxification that would make any doctor jealous. Who needs expensive medical procedures when you have Don Ruben's, right? We became connoisseurs of the colon cleanse, sipping our way to a cleaner, more enlightening existence. So, my dear friends, if you're looking for an unforgettable experience, a roller-coaster of flavors and sensations, then you simply must visit Don Ruben's Mexican Restaurant. They proudly offer satisfaction guaranteed – or your money back! But really, who would want their money back after such a unique adventure? You'll be talking about this daring dining escapade for generations to come. Bon appetite!More

Service was good and sympathetic. Regarding food, we were disappointed (we took beef and chicken fajitas). It was extremely fat, with too much oil. Beef was too cooked and difficult to eat.

We went to this nice Mexican restaurant during our stay in mariposa. The atmosphere there was very nice as well as the personnel. The food was very good and felt authentic Mexican. The portions were generous and the bill was not high at all for...what we had.More

Let’s just say, I hope this was just a bad night at Don Ruben’s. The food was just OK, but the service was HORRIBLE. Everything came to the table all at once. Chips and dip, plus an appetizer we ordered AND both our meals. All...at the same time! We had a waiter that was not very attentive and forgot to bring the tortillas for the Fajita dish, even after being asked twice and didn’t even apologize! By the time the tortillas arrived everything was cold. We boxed it all up and left. We also had a margarita that tasted like it had come out of a premix bottle, not freshly made. The taco salad with pulled pork was just OK. The pulled pork was kind of bland with very little taste to it. I had to add some hot sauce to give it some flavor. Overall, not a good night at Don Ruben’s……More

It's all great: the family atmosphere, the authentic Mexican food, the welcoming charm of the wait staff - we're locals, but rarely venture into town during normal meal hours. This, then - was our first visit to Don Rubens - though we had dined here...on occasion under its previous ownership. It was the day before Thanksgiving and we just needed to get out (my wife and myself) to do something...for ourselves. Lunch sounded like just that: fun. I should mention that my wife's dietary needs (due mostly to health considerations) are a little challenging: dairy free, gluten-free, semi-vegetarian (pescatarian.) Me? I'll eat anything with the exception of CHEESE; can't stand the stuff. Yes, I know: that's near-heresy for Mexican food, but: the charming waitress greeted us warmly, seated us - and was immediately and thoroughly attentive. After delivering our drinks, bringing us a basket of chips with clearly home-made salsa (just the way I love it: nearly a gazpacho rather than the thick, tomato-saucey stuff out of a bottle many people have been conditioned to think is a "salsa") and checking in with us until we were ready to order, my wife decided upon the shrimp tacos (corn tortillas, of course) with NO cheese - dairy-free plate. I ordered the camarónes a la diablas - with NO cheese on the plate - and flour tortillas. Our food came within ten minutes - very swiftly, and was clearly cooked to order. And what can I say? We were both thoroughly delighted - this was the REAL deal - and it was just delicious. Servings were generous (I had nine large shrimp with three moderately-sized tortillas; both plates had a goodly amount of refritos and rice made, as it SHOULD be made: with achiote. My diabla sauce was right on the money: chile de arbol and guajillo both came through - the shrimp on both plates were perfectly prepared without being overdone or tough. It was just what we wanted - and it's really great to have one's expectations met for a change. Don Rubens is our new go-to restaurant for Mexican food and now we'll start making excuses to head to town - at meal times!More

We were overnighting in Mariposa after several days hiking in Yosemite. Restaurant is convenient on main street in Mariposa and with outdoor seating in a covered varendah. Good friendly service, food was average Tex-Mex, big nice margaritas. Reasonably priced.

We were very happy with Don Rubens. Kind of your typical small town family run Mexican restaurant but that's what we wanted. The food was good and the portions were solid. Good value and a great place to go for a margarita after a long...day of hiking in Yosemite!More

Will eat here again! My hubby and visit Yosemite once or twice a year so we will certainly make Don Rubens a common stop! The food was great and the service was fantastic. They have patio seating for dogs as well. We got there close...to closing and they were still happy to help us even though by time we finished eating it would be past closing time. Highly recommend stopping.More

Looking for a low key dinner place after hiking all day at Yosemite, we ended up at Don Rubens. I love Mexican food, but this place was just average. Most of the food was bland and flavorless, with the exception of the salsa, which was...probably the best thing here. I debated between 2 or 3 stars, but since two stars equals poor I thought it deserved more than that. I would not go back.More

After a long day of site seeing and hiking in Yosemite, my sister was craving a good Mexican dinner and we happened upon this restaurant. It did not disappoint. It was Halloween evening and the restaurant was very busy. We were seated quickly but had...to wait almost 20 minutes before someone even took our drink order. However, that is my only negative comment. The staff, although rushed, were very friendly. The chips, salsa, vege fajitas, and chicken entree were all delicious, freshly prepared, delivered hot to our table and with more than enough for one meal. We would definitely return.More
