My husband and I recently had dinner at the Los Olivos wine merchant & cafe. We always make this one of our “must stops” when in town. We have always enjoyed the fresh food and wide array of wines. Marcus was our server when we...were seated and everything was going well. He was witty and entertaining. However, he had to leave prior to finishing dinner, and other server took over. After that, service went down from there. We were only one of three tables in the dining room, but we had difficulty being served. We opted not to order mote wine and dessert due to the poor service.More

Nice place with outside seating, but the service is not good. Could be because we were outside, but it was very frustrating. Pizza was good, salads are huge/shareable. The waitress could have coached us on this, but didn’t.

The Wine Merchant used to be our go-to lunch spot in Los Olivos. It isn't anymore. Water was served in plastic cups. Wine pours were skimpy. The curry chicken salad had neither curry nor much chicken. The butternut squash and burrata salad consisted of mounds...of arugula and little squash with a few cranberries. We asked for bread to go with our salads and were told that we would have to put in an order--for bread! The place was only half full on a Sunday, when it was always bustling before. It's definitely slid downhill.More

Pros: Convenient. Excellent menu. Great food. Friendly service. Cons: Back room is lonely. Minimal restroom. Parking can be tight. Star Ratings: - Overall: 4 1/2 - Location: 5 - Ambiance: 4 - Restroom: 3 - Menu: 5 - Food Quality: 5 - Food Portions: 5...- Service: 5 - Price: 4 - Value: 5 - Parking: 3 My wife and I and her brother visited Los Olivos for a few hours on a Friday in March and needed a place for lunch. We walked around and checked the menus of other restaurants, but they seemed to offer dinner prices at lunch so we headed for the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Cafe. Pros: - The restaurant and wine bar is in a convenient location near the heart of the small downtown area and within walking distance of Highway 154. - When we ate here in the past, the weather was warmer and we sat out front on the patio. This day was cloudy and cool with a stiff breeze so we went inside. The interior is large with an expansive horseshoe shaped bar and lots of tables in a cozy section. The hostess said all tables were reserved so we sat in a small room in the back (see cons) - Menu had lots of good choices for both meat eaters and vegetarians, including appetizers, salads, soups, sandwiches and larger entrees. - Food was great. I started with an 8 ounce bowl of Soup of the Day (Vegetable, $11) and followed that with the Asian Chicken Salad ($21). I “eat well”, but that salad was big enough to take half of it home. My wife had the Nicosia Salad ($21) and raved about it while her brother chomped down on the Hot Pastrami Sandwich ($19) with house made fries. It was a dinner sized portion, but he’s a “hungry man” and finished it at lunch. - Service from Stacey B was friendly and helpful. Although she mainly covered tables out front and we were in the back, she always had a smile and couldn’t do enough. - Parking in Los Olivos is “get it where you can…usually on a side street”, but on a cold blustery day, we had no trouble finding a spot on the main street. Cons: - The back room where we sat is meant for the overflow when things get busy. However, it’s bare and kind of cold (literally and figuratively) and feels like it belongs in the Elks Lodge (nothing against Elks). The only advantage? It’s close to the restroom. - The restroom was just that…..one room with space for one person. Maybe I didn’t see another, but a large restaurant should be able to do better. Everything considered - food quality, quantity, value, service and even the back room - the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Cafe is a great choice for a meal.More

We nipped in for a late lunch and sat at the bar to enjoy a couple of really good salads along with two different wine flights. We were actually staying on the owners property in an Air BnB, so know that a lot of of...their produce comes straight from their own land which is makes all the difference. Service was great, atmosphere was relaxed and everyone seemed to be having a great time. Also def worth noting that they have a dedicated late lunch menu which is absolutely perfect if like us you find that time escapes you with so much on offer in this beautiful area!More

Excellent spot for excellent food! We sat outside to enjoy the great weather and ordered soup, salad and pastrami sandwich. All were perfectly crafted. Our server was super friendly and helpful and we highly recommend this spot between wine tasting and shopping!

Stopped in Los Olivos on our way to wine tasting. Looked around for a restaurant we could get into for lunch as it was after 1 pm. In our wanderings we came across the Wine Merchant Cafe. Short wait to be seated. On our way...to being seated realized half of the building is a large inventory of wines from all over. Nice menu. Lunch was good. Service was fine. They have an indoor and an outdoor seating area.More

We had a nice dinner here on a busy Saturday night. The food was good and the service adequate. I had the steak Cobb salad which was very good. I would like to try them again because this time was just ok.

Excellent choices of wines, local and global. The staff knows their stuff and can recommend pairings. Great menu selections, grilled romaine with salmon was excellent. Nice vibe.

They sat us as a walk in and we were grateful. Very nice staff and helpful. Food was good and while the back room we were in was a little chilly and not decorated much, the rest of the restaurant is cozy and nice!

A lovely spot in Los Olivos. It’s a small town so there’s limited options, but we thoroughly enjoyed both times we ate here. The serving staff are all fantastic and super friendly, there is a huge amount of choice of wine and the food was...delicious. We particularly enjoyed the steak, gnocchi and burger. It is not cheap (but nowhere in this town is) but we feel it was worth the money given the quality. Great atmosphere. Worth noting everywhere in town closes pretty early; this restaurant stops serving at 8pm so by 8:45pm they were closing up shop.More

We decided to eat at the Cafe on Sunday, October 16, 2022, after tasting in Los Olivos. We did not have a reservation, so we had no problem waiting up the road at one of the tasting rooms. To be brief, the food and service...are fantastic and consistently great. I believe the Cafe was hit pretty hard because of the pandemic and the difficult restrictions placed on the restaurant industry. They are short of kitchen staff like many places so they will not fill the place to capacity if it has a negative effect on customer service. This may have been an aberration given that it was a Sunday. Nevertheless, if there is wait, it is well worth it.More

Stopped in for dinner after a day of Wine Tasting. Sat on the patio which was a perfect, since the sun was setting and it was beginning to cool down. Such a comfortable, cozy place with a warm and inviting ambience. I ordered a ceasar...salad to start and parmesan gnocchi as my entree. Also ordered bread and dipping oil. Everything was extraordinarily delicious and fresh. Service was excellent. Definitely would go again.More

We sat at the bar and ordered a couple of beers. At the same time we placed an order for An appetizer and our meal. We waited 30 minutes and still nothing. A couple that came in behind us was already served a pizza and...no one had checked back with us. I flagged down another server and she immediately brought us a cold and not fresh appetizer. The owner or manager was very close to us doing a winetasting and I had called him over to explain our situation. He immediately left and was concerned about the timestamp on tickets as I had stated that a couple came in behind us was served their pizza. Instead of dealing with me directly and the problem that we were having he insisted that it was all about timestamps. Our server, Taylor was for sure not wanting to be there this day as he could care less about us and our situation. The manager/owner then proceeded to come back and say well I’m not gonna charge you for your food, which we never received but I am going to charge you for your beers. The beers probably cost about three dollars and for that amount he lost two good customers that usually leave there with a couple bottles of wine as well. We’ve never left there without spending at least $200, we won’t be back.More
