First time visit... post covid outing. Husband and I both ordered the corned beef Reuben. These are large meaty sandwiches. Could have done with ordering one and sharing. Very tasty... good, lean meat. We both ordered fires, he liked more than me. They’re of the...wider variety which I don’t prefer. Pickles were provided on request. They were crisp with mild dill flavors. Not the best I’ve had but better than Katz’s deli in NYC. Huge selection of sandwiches on menu. Will bring family to visit if in the area. Oh, we really liked the coffee too.More
Good food, and plenty. Value for the money.......not. Service was great, if you happen to be Jewish, but for a Goy......not so great. I will go back, hopefully only for the deli and bakery, and the food.......take out.
Great lunch Experience! Even the young man serving water had the nicest smile and personality. Our server , Jackie, was outstanding. Large portions of everything. Piping hot food and the coldest best tasting strawberry milkshake. we loved that they bring you the cup with the...extra milkshake in it!
We loved every second and every bite here. Plenty of leftovers for dinner tonight.More
I have eaten in the restaurant. The portions are big, and the food is excellent. However, I love the bakery section. Cookies by the pound. Huge peanut butter cookies , I buy six of them that are a little over a half a pound. They...are the best peanut butter cookies, I have ever had. My other favorite is the carrot cake. It is delicious. No artificial ingredients. It comes in several sizes, from large cupcakes to a two layer cake big enough for a sizable party.More
I began going to D.Z. Akins in college in 1985, because it was right around the corner from SDSU and offered wonderful comfort food. In the 90s, I began taking my kids there when they were little. They loved being able to grab a pickle...from the jar on the table as soon as we were seated, and a trip to the bakery area afterward was golden. D.Z. Akins is still a family favorite with us and our now-grown sons. We go as a family, or my husband and I pop in before/after Aztec basketball games. The service is always great and the waitstaff personable and funny. We have walked in ½ hour before closing and the folks were welcoming and pleasant, even though they probably just wanted to go home! One late night my husband and I were craving ice cream, and saw a chocolate and coffee pairing on the menu... well, we should have had four more people with us, as it was the most generous ice cream dessert either of us had ever seen, much less attempt to tuck away. Love D.Z.A.'s soups, their salads, their sandwiches, and their full dinners. Personal fave is #93: lox on a split bagel with shmear, tomato and onion... just so satisfying.More
I have not been back for a couple of years as I normally don't go that far south in San Diego. But I stayed near SDSU for the Holiday Bowl and so this put me five minutes away from my favorite corned beef hash breakfast,...which they serve all day. I also got the Ted Leitner (Corned beef and pastrami on rye with cheese) to go for after the game. A little pricey, but it is a big NY deli sized sandwich.
Another plus is the jar of pickles on the table. Big fat pickle chunks with a little heat to them.
The wait staff was very good even though the place gets crowded. It has a huge dining room, but still gets packed. There is also a deli counter and bakery up by the entrance.More
At there this month to meet friends. Their pastrami and tongue sandwich was delicious, the bread is too small, it’s an overkill. This sandwich is $20 plus add a beverage.... it’s over $25 pp for lunch. Many other choices around - for a fraction of...the price.
The desserts shop at the front of the resto is awkward at best.
Take a number.
Wait your turn.
Place your order for cookies cakes or eclairs.
They fill the order, but you can’t have it. Huh!?
Then... go to cashier ( a diff line) to pay your item.
Two cashiers, only one takes Visa card... huh?
Then bring back your receipt to pick up your order. Too many steps. Lots of wasted time. Largely ineffective. This place badly needs a better client flow mgmt. Old school and sad. Not going back soon, nothing changes. They are not the only deli in town.More
