I had high hopes for Nine-Ten, but they fell way short - short on food, short on service, short on experience. Strangely, everyone seated around us agreed, yet we all stuck it out to the end. How did this happen? Here’s my recap: My interest...was piqued originally by the “Michelin plate” rating, the good TripAdvisor reviews, the Top chef accolades of the executive chef, Jason Knibb, and also the good reviews of the pastry chef. Going in, it checked every box. Then, we arrived for dinner at 5:15 and were seated on their back patio in the blazing hot sun (cramped back patio of a small boutique hotel). The only attempt to reseat us was at one of the other blazing hot tables on their patio (so wait to go, if you must, after sundown). I had a prickley pear cocktail that was beautiful to look at but was average overall. I also had a nice glass of red wine with dinner, and I perused the wine list, which seemed pretty extensive. The sourdough bread, that you buy as an appetizer, was good - crunchy crust, pillowy goodness inside. We had the braised short rib appetizer which netted to a couple small morsels of roast wrapped in a a couple small pasta shells, artfully adorned with a few mini carrots and a dozen peas. It reads on the menu as if robust, but it is not. For our entrees, we had the scallops and the ribeye. My husband ate his Maine scallops in silence. When asked, he called them small and “ok.” (I was very surprised, given the La Jolla address, that they had no fresh local fish options). My steak was cooked appropriately (medium rare) but was smothered in a lukewarm mushroom gravy. The “sides” of mushrooms, crispy onions were served separately (and delayed about 5 min after steak arrived) and were pretty delish actually. Maybe if it had been plated and served together, it would have been more appealing, but overall, it’s difficult not to call the overall steak experience awful. We ordered the Half Baked Chocolate Cake (catchy name) for dessert, which was good. Here’s what it was, tho, y’all: a very nice small chocolate soufflé, nothing really very special. By the time we left, we wished our weary and hot back patio comrades the best of luck. I have never felt so relieved to leave a restaurant.More

I was a solo diner on a lovely March evening. My table on the patio featured a nice view (though the sun had set by the time I had my reservation), including one of the tallest palm trees I have ever seen. My server told...me it had been a 7-foot tall palm in 1913 when the hotel associated with Nine-Ten was built! The menu here is not expansive. There are perhaps ten or so appetizers and salads and about the same number of entrees. I ordered a duck confit salad and it was a delight. Bitter frisee and greens paired off wonderfully with the unctuous and crisp pieces of duck. My entree was a rack of lamb that had obviously not been cooked before I ordered it because it arrived piping hot and a perfect medium rare (2 generous double-chops). It was meltingly good and the accompanying vegetables and especially the wood-fired oyster mushrooms that were luscious and wonderfully smokey. Skipping dessert would not have been a bad idea but I got the stuffed brioche donuts anyway. The four small round donuts were stuffed with a delightful Meyer lemon cheesecake. A sweet flavor bomb in the mouth! I highly recommend this La Jolla gem!More

It is a beautiful restaurant. We had reservations and were escorted to a lovely table on the patio. It had a lovely view and with the heater on we were very cozy. I think our waiter’s name was Quinn The food was excellent. We shared...the Jamaican pork belly for an appetizer. It was delicious. For entrees I had the King Salmon and my husband had the special of the day Sea bass. Both of our seafood dishes were excellent. The fish was nice and moist, the skin was beautifully crisped and the sauces complimented the fish very well. We shared the stuffed brioche doughnuts filled with lemon cream for dessert. They were the perfect way to end the meal. While we were there another couple was sitting at a table near us and they were celebrating the lady’s birthday. Our waiter asked if she would like a celebratory glass of champagne. She asked if it was for her birthday and he replied that no it was not. This is a sneaky way to try and pad the bill. They were given a voucher for a free dessert on their next visit. The couple asked if they could use it this evening and they were told that it was not valid for this visit but for the next visit. Most restaurants that we have gone to if they are aware that it is a special occasion they will offer a complimentary glass of wine or dessert. Nine Ten’s lack of acknowledgment of her birthday and instead their attempt to try an upsell to an elderly couple is chintzy. The restaurant also charges a 5% additional charge for their increasing costs and increasing minimum wage. I’m certain that Nine Ten probably raises their prices to allow for increasing costs. Certainly their prices are already fairly high especially the wine prices which are astronomical. Although the restaurant is beautiful and the food was excellent it is unlikely that we would return. There seems to be a lack of respect for their customers.More

In town for a conference so booked Nine-Ten about a month out. It did not disappoint. The restaurant is in a beautiful old building and the space was intimate and beautiful inside. We were greeted immediately and taken to our table. Lovely drinks and sour...dough bread as a starter. We also ordered the short rib appetizer special and it was outstanding ! One of our party ordered the striped bass special - he loved it. I ordered the lamb and my husband ordered the ribeye. We were all pleased though my husband wasn’t over to moon about his meal- though the ribeye was cooking perfectly. Finished the night with sorbet and donuts. Lovely evening.More

We were having brunch there today. Out waiter Ramiro seemed to be having trouble getting our order right, we ordered out food and food was okay, when it was time to pay the bill we used a $100 visa gift card and paid the rest...in cash. Our server seemed to be staring at the register for almost 20 minutes and then came bqck to us saying it was declined. I check the balance online and saw multiple charges online for 1.20 until eventually becoming 0. The employee then ask for help from their manager sid who was very rude. He went to our table and demanded payment, i shower them the transactions on the phone regarding their charges. Sid continued yo argue with the people i was with. I adviced him to walk away and he replied back with you walk away very rudely. He didnt once apologized correctly. He kept insisting that it wasnt there fault. Also our gift card was used and that we were charged on out regular card as well.More

From exquisite oysters to delicate donuts, this restaurant has blown us through the roof. For starters, not only was the food delicious, but the service was on point. For the oysters, I thought the unique touch of olive oil the chef put added that pop...of flavor every oyster needs. We also ordered the Jamaican Pork Belly. The black eyed beans were a delicious pairing with the so tender pork. Next, a delicate Hamachi which was literally like butter. After the Hamachi, we have the tomato burrata. The tomatoes with the mozzarella cheese created just the freshest flavor. Next, we move onto my personal favorite meal, the artichoke ravioli in lamb ragú. Between the cream of artichoke filling and probably the best sauce you’ve ever tasted, the chef truly created a memorable and unforgettable dish. Finally, the brioche donuts. The raspberry and cheesecake filling— ahh— so good! To sum it up, this was an amazing meal and definitely worth it. I would recommend this any time.More
