First time to eat here and we weren’t disappointed. I had the grilled fish tacos and they were so good. It’s a fun location along the railroad tracks with a big covered outdoor patio. We’ll be back again.

My wife and I went here for dinner on the recommendation of staff where we were staying. While the quantity of food was certainly enough to satisfy most anyone we didn’t think the food was anything above average. The real problem is nothing tasted at...all spicy to my taste and I’m not even someone who enjoys really spicy food. I had the enchilada, carne asada and quesadilla combo. The asada was the best of the three while the other two were just ok. I’d try somewhere else for Mexican food next time. But the staff was very pleasant.More

We were looking for something new for lunch and went to El Mexicali Cafe on Monroe street. The restaurant was lively and we got a booth. Our server was helpful. I ordered a skinny margarita which was very tasty. we started with Chiles Gueritos and...my date followed with the signature fajitas. She said that she enjoyed it and the staff made sure it was gluten and dairy free. My main dish was a camarones dish where large prawns were wrapped in bacon and baked. Very delicious. The prices for the meals were all good and the margaritas were also well prices.More

The food was fresh and tasty. Service was very fast. Only negative is it gets very crowded. You need to go around 4:00 or a long wait is in store. I had the sampler and it was so good way too much food.

Pros: Very friendly service Cons: VERY salty food We enjoy margaritas with Mexican food. A $5 house margarita here is made with rot-gut Montezuma tequila. Any other tequila is "top shelf" and the margarita costs $15.95. We stuck with water. The chips were good, but...the salsa tasted like it came from a jar. We ordered a carne asada quesadilla. It was served on delicious fresh tortillas, but the meat was very salty. We also ordered chili verde. It was so salty that we could not eat it.More

The signature fajitas were the best I've had anywhere! Service was prompt and friendly. Several locals were here, even in the off-season.

Such immediate great service & food. We loved that the menu had pictures on it which made it easier to choose what we wanted. They were very friendly AND also served great margaritas!

Food was just ok. Service was slow we had to ask twice about my beer and her Margarita. They clearly forgot. Flies everywhere inside I don’t think we will be back.

We go there every time we visit the area. For us, it is a must. The servers are friendly and efficient. The new outdoor seating area is a great addition.

Due to Covid it was outside seating only, which normally would be fine except it was quite the windy day with limited seating. So not the best choice of days to visit. But that being said, the food was terrific, service was as well as...could be expected under the circumstances. I will definitely go back!More

The food was very good. Grilled fish on the seafood tacos instead of deep fried. The only problem is it’s in a noisy location. Very busy street on one side and railroad tracks on the other.

Our Airbnb host recommended this restaurant and we should have tried it sooner! We went on a Friday evening and really enjoyed the atmosphere - busy and simple, with live music and people enjoying their food. We had margaritas and tacos, but the best part...was the chiles gueritos rellenos de camarón! These are delicious shrimp-stuffed peppers, like nothing we have tried before. They are listed as an appetizer, but an order could serve as a meal.More

Visited on a Friday evening - the restaurant was a bit crowded (a short wait to be seated), noisy and simply furnished, but that is part of the charm. The service was warm and friendly and our dinners were excellent. I particularly enjoyed my Chile...Relleno. They even managed to squeeze in some live entertainment. I will happily return.More

95% of our menu is gluten-free. When you visit, please let your server know you have celiac disease and need the dishes to be gluten-free and prepared gluten-free.
