Our party of four patronized Barndiva during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when restaurants were limited to outdoor seating where tables are "socially distant," and required reservations. Upon entry (but not at making reservation), we were told a 19% gratuity would be added to the...bill; no worries as we typically tip 20% of the order. We were seated in a lovely backyard area with soft lighting among the trees, given paper menus with very limited selections (meaning only 4 different items per course) and told we had to order via text as the restaurant wanted to minimize visits of the wait staff to tables. In my view, the "texting" system did not serve its purpose as wait staff had to deliver water, drinks, food and take away dirty items. If anything, the text system was a distraction and frankly, made ordering difficult when we were there for a relaxing experience. For example, we ordered using the restaurant rules, the phone system kept auto-correcting the name of the pasta dish my husband and I ordered. I also had questions regarding the menu, but there was no one to answer my questions, and texting questions was, well, work. Beer was available only by the bottle and the Zinfandel wine I ordered was nothing to write home about, even though it was $17 a glass and we were in Sonoma wine country. While water was replenished immediately by staff, service of the items for which we paid was slow. The lady of the couple dining with us ordered the broth soup and scallops for entree and no cocktails or wine. The gentleman ordered 2 IPA beers, pork loin for entree and dessert, and my husband and I had two red wines (me) and two IPA beers (him), shishito peppers for shared appetizer and two of the same pasta dishes (the only other entree choices were scallops, pork loin and chicken). The bill for the four of us was $319, and I note the 19% was on the entire bill, including the tax and other fees. This restaurant bill was, by far, the largest of any of the meals we had had in Healdsburg during our 3-day stay (the 2nd highest was about $230 for a party of 5 and included much more food). I also note small children were permitted to run around the area, meaning they were not policed by either their parents or restaurant personnel. I give a rating of a 2 because the food was good, but balancing that with the texting, slow service and outrageous prices, a 2 is the best I will do. I do so to be fair to future prospective patrons, although I am reluctant as I appreciate restaurants are in a terrible predicament during this COVID-19 pandemic. Suffice it to say, with the other great choices of restaurants in Healdsburg, Geyserville and Santa Rosa, we will not be back.More
