Max's is always great.... the dishes are always super great, the bar pours a great drink, the waitresses are the best... and the deserts are sinful... yes, one of my top three enjoyable restaurants in Fresno.... truly a great spot for a romantic two, or a great night for 4,6,8 or more...!!!!

Max's has a great atmosphere, great staff and always good food. The new ownership is keeping up a long time great reputation. The menu gets updated regularly and since I go there often it is nice to try new items. Fairly new Kale Salad is great, Scallops are always good as is the Ahi. Pasta specials are always good. A... One of our 'go to' places to eat in Fresno which does not have many really good places to eat. Burger is delicious, meat loaf incredible. Chef is inventive and thinks out of the box. Modest menu, good selection of wines. Exceptional staff. Great value for the money.

Stopped by on a Thursday. The place was full. We shared the trio of fries for appetizer--with an order of poki. Quite good. I like the eggplant fries. Wife had the Kobe beef meat loaf and I had duck. My wife didn't like the crust on her entree from heating it on the flat top. I found it tasty with... More

It sure is nice when a restaurant you haven't visited for some time turns out as good as you remember. Such was our experience at Max's. Our food was well done and the service was attentive but not overbearing. Max's is a premium restaurant with a casual vibe. Though prices are on the higher side, the value in preparation is... More

This used to be a favorite restaurant but last two times - there were some flaws. Our party ordered Max’s Signature Fries, Superfood Salad, Prawns & Risotto, Kobe Beef Meatloaf, and Almond Ahi. The fries were tasty but the eggplant was a tad greasy. Overall, a nice presentation. The salad was very good. The meatloaf was packed full of flavor... More

Description
Experience California-bistro dining in a place reminiscent of San Francisco, where the cuisine is accessible and the service is humble - not unlike Max's beginnings.

In June of 1997 Scott Stanley opened Max's Market and Bakery (named after his son) on the corner of Bullard and West in Fresno. The cafe featured gourmet foods and sandwiches made daily with freshly baked, all-natural artisan bread handcrafted using old world methods.

Max's Bistro and Bar is more than quality cuisine and service - it's comfortable.

You know it by the three generations of Fresnans who each sit at their favorite table. You can hear it in the laughter that erupts between server and guest as it carries across the room. And you can see it on the face of head chef Scott Sauer as he looks out his tiny kitchen window into a crowd of familiar faces who have become part of the Max's family.

Max's is comfortable. It's never about ego - but relationships. It's not about pretense - but culinary creativity.

Every dish, every time, is crafted from the ground up and bursting with creativity - consistently prepared with the freshest of ingredients, and best of ingredients that can be found locally. The aromas fill the restaurant as the martini and wine bar serves up a variety of hand-shaken martinis along with an extensive offering of wines by the glass or bottle. As seasons change, so will the fresh fish and produce delivered each morning defining Max's seafood special for the day. From day-boat scallops harvested fresh to the center cut of a filet where size and shape are exacted by hand, we promise a unique dining experience.
