I had lunch at Fremont Afghan on January 31, 2020. This place has really good quality Afghan style food, and excellent service. I had a lamb kebab dish that came with a pita bread and cucumber salad that was amazing.

We tried this restaurant based on a recommendation from an Afghan friend and sincerely had high hopes! Unfortunately, we were sorely disappointed with the food and most of all with their slow and appalling service and nonchalant behavior. The mast o khiyar was so bland...as though it was just yogurt with no cucumber, mint or seasoning. Mantoo was drenched in sauce and the beef wasn’t that tasty. The lamb entrée was meh, their chicken kabob was the only edible item we’d ordered. The service was non-existent to say the least. The servers all had huddled up and were watching something on their phone, so no one was paying attention to guests to come and fill up water or do refills of tea or ask if you need anything else. The entrees arrived after a looooooong time. The icing on the cake came when we wanted to pay – we’d asked them to split the bill on two credit cards and they ran the same card twice. When we noticed this error and mentioned it to them, the guy who’d made the mistake, just shrugged his shoulders and walked on and offered no apology. Suffice to say, we will not be returning to this restaurant, nor will we recommend this place to anyone.More
With the demise of Salang Pass, we went in search of a new "favorite" Afghani restaurant, and Fremont Afghan Kabob Restaurant - way too long a name - met the requirements. The food is excellent, and despite its name, this restaurant offers way more than...kabobs. The appetizers are excellent. We recommend the borani kadoo (butternut pumpkin) and badinjon borani (grilled eggplant) both cooked to perfection. And for the main course one has to try the qabili palau with lamb or chicken, sometimes called the national dish of Afghanistan. My wife and I ordered it both ways and shared. Lamb is usually not a problem, but chicken can be tough. We were amazed at how tender it was prepared. Our friends ordered kabobs: chicken and beef and raved about how good they were. We will definitely be going back to try other items on the menu. The portion sizes were large, allowing us to bring home enough for another meal. There is a vegetarian menu for those that prefer that option. The service was good. A minor complaint is the poor parking in the cramped strip mall on Mowry at I880 in which the restaurant is located. There is additional parking on the street behind the mall. We'll be back.More
As the title suggests, avoid this place if the portion size and price are important to you. We paid over $80 for basically snacks. The food actually tasted good and I haven’t got an issue on this (hence 2 stars instead of 1). However, when...a family of four is still hungry after finishing the meal, then there’s a problem. This maybe suitable for some, but not for us. As a family, we are not considered ‘big eaters’. So you’re in big trouble here if you are. I normally give priority to food quality and taste, but the disparity between this and price and quantity was too big to ignore. Btw, we ended up buying a pizza straight after from a different place, just to complete the meal. ££$$€€.More
Not an inspired name, but the food and decor are great. Choose regular seats or traditional low tables, nice lighting and music. We had 3 kinds of kebobs, and all were yummy, but the lamb ones were truly great, tender, juicy, just right spices. The...pumkin dish was also amazing. Ate too much to dare dessert, next time though.More
Entering an ambiance which offers the unique village with respect, gratitude, humility and hard work
My previous favorite Afghan restaurant went out of business, but our Lyft driver recommended this restaurant and I'm so glad he did! The lamb kabobs were so flavorful! Actually, everything we had was flavorful! I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to try the bolani...or other dishes, but will do that next time!More
We had kabob from another Afghan restaurant in Fremont a few months back and we liked it very much. We tried to call in our take-out order last Sunday and again today, but no one picked up the phone. So we decided to get the...kabob from this place since the review has 4.5 stars. I had lamb kabob and it was delicious. Lamb was tender, juicy, well seasoned, and a little charcoaled on the outside. Brown rice and bread were good. The portion was large we couldn’t finish all the food. The price was fair. I would definitely order from this place soon.More
We'd never had Afghan food before, so we really wanted to try it (especially in Fremont, which according to Wikipedia has the largest Afghani population outside of Afghanistan). We arrive on a Thursday night around 6:30pm, and it was pretty empty, so we had our...choice of tables. We chose to sit at a low table. Our 10-month-old daughter was able to sit on the cushions (and there were cushions against the wall) very comfortably, which was a plus. Please excuse me as I don't remember the names of the dishes, so I'm just going to describe them (and you can compare my descriptions to the menu). We did everything family style which is recommended so you can try a little of everything. The potato pancakes (Bolani?) were delicious. I think another reviewer described them as Chinese green onion pancakes with mashed potatoes in them, and that is a great way to describe its look and taste. There is a lot on the plate, so it's a good one to share. The butternut squash dish was sweet, almost candied. The lentils dish was rich and spiced well. The kabobs (we got the choice of 3 dish) were all delicious and cooked well. We also ordered the ice cream dessert (with the noodles), the pudding, and the baklava, all of which were sweet, but not overly sweet, with hints of spices. The noodles were a bit strange texture-wise, but it didn't detract from the flavor. The pudding is soft and creamy. The baklava tasted like it was supposed to. I order the chai (tea) and it had a gingery aftertaste, which is very warming. My husband ordered the yogurt drink, which he liked as well. The service was more hands-off, which I liked, but they came quickly when you needed them. The prices were decent for the portions. I'd definitely come back if I'm ever in the area again. It was a great introduction to Afghan cuisine.More
Fremont Kebab is easy to miss, tucked away in a small shopping strip with a Starbucks. Service was prompt, attentive, and helpful. Meals start with bread. I ordered the house dip, which is basically a baba ganoush. It was creamy, flavorful, and delicious with the...house bread. I had the roasted lamb for my main course. It was tender and bursting with flavor. One can tell that it has braised for hours until reaching the perfect consistency. It was served on alongside long-grain rice. When you’re done, you can pay at the counter. Highly recommend.More
We wanted to enjoy the famed Afghani food of Fremont and were recommended this place by a local. Our family incl. 2 teenage boys, enjoyed it thoroughly. Food was tasty and hot, portions were generous, and prices were reasonable. The service was very prompt (...although it was not busy when we were there). Would recommend highly the appetizers of potato bolani and mantoo. The vegetarian pumpkin dish was also very good as were all the kabobs. I don’t know much about Afghani food but we did note that we have been to other Afghani restaurants with a different variety of choices. Maybe this reflects regional differences? Just an observation, not a criticism. Of note is that this restaurant is halal and serves no alcohol. It also has plenty of vegetarian offerings. It is a pretty little place with colorful tapestries on the walls and tables and has a large area where you can sit on the floor and dine. Highly recommend if you are looking for an “ethnic” food experience, not California nouveau cuisine. Would go back without a doubt if I lived closer.More
I’ve been here twice now while in the area on business. Each time the server has been attentive and the food has been really good. I would say that don’t expect anything similar to Pakistani food as it isn’t as spicy. In saying that, it...is still really good. I get the Dahl, lamb, eggplant, and Firni. The tea is also good. I’d go back.More
You get excellent Afghani cuisine at this restaurant, though the rates are a bit high. However, the value for money spent is worth it.
I've been here twice so far and each time the food was so delicous. The waiter gave some good recommendations and I was very happy with my choices. Dishes I highly recommend: Korma Lamb - huge lamb chop cooked in a tomato and garlic sauce....The meat was so tender it fell off the bone easily. I finished the sauce with white rice! Veggi Borani Kadoo - roasted butternut squash with yogurt sauce. It's so good! The butternut squash was so sweet, and the tanginess of yogurt sauce cooled down the squash and made it so easy to eat the entire plate. The sweetness of this dish can almost make it a dessert! You can choose to sit at the regular table or on the floor in a designated area for a more traditional seating arrangement and more authentic experience, but you need to take off your shoes.More
If you love good food and trying something new, you have to go here. Try the lamb kabobs! I have eaten lamb cooked well and poorly all over the world, and these folks know how to cook it very well! Great atmosphere, very authentic, a...good experience for the true Foodie.More
