Yesterday evening we had reservations for my daughter's birthday. This was my first experience with Poseidon On The Beach. First off, I would like to say the cuisine was very good. My issue was that, our server was nice and accommodating and after taking our...cocktail order announced the days special. She never mentioned a price for the special so unwittingly assumed it would be in the ballpark of the normal menu because there was nothing out of the ordinary based on the ingredients or preparation (Surf and Turf). My wife and daughter decided to split the special. When the bill came the cost of the special was 135.00 with a split plate change. The most expensive meal on the menu is a Seafood Platter at 73.00. Thinking this may be an error I asked and the server stated it was not they policy to state prices only if asked. I've started in the culinary industry many years ago and consider myself a avid fooding and restaurant goer having dined at many Michelin Star restaurants around the world. I don't consider Poseidon On The Beach in the class of a Michelin Star establishment, the food is good, but it's just an average setting which happens to be on the beach, and the staff are attired in average clothing (black jeans and button shirt). This is the first restaurant I've ever encountered with such a policy. Don't get me wrong, it's not the cost, it's the policy and the fact the price did not represent what was plated. I've dined many fine dining restaurants when the plate price is easily 150 or more per plate and the entire dining experience is reflected such a price. Would I be a repeat customer of Poseidon On the Beach? No, there are plenty of quality restaurants in Del Mar and all over San Diego County. In fact I would say San Diego County is a quality restaurant Mecca with countless choices from top end to quality street fair. So no, I won't be a repeat customer of Poseidon On The Beach.More

We took a lovely drive from downtown San Diego, where we were staying, through the beach towns before arriving in Del Mar. In the mood for seafood, we saw the reviews for Poseidon and decided to give it a try. It was a fabulous experience:...great food and service. I had the Thai Shrimp Salad (divine and we plan to replicate at home) and my husband had the fish and chips. Fries were awesome but fish just ok. The waiter we had was super friendly and attentive. The manager stopped by our table to check on things and we had a long conversation about the Thai Salad and what made it so special. It is one of his favorite items as well. The secret: the Thai Peanut Butter Dressing!! We sat outside under a large umbrella right along the beach where we could watch surfers and beach goers enjoy the day. A perfect setting for anyone. We were able to walk in but my guess is that making reservations in advance would be a smart move.More

Four of us decided to stop by here after a family memorial service, my wife and I have been here a few times but two others had not. We figured the views, and upbeat atmosphere of this place would pick up our moods, and it...did! Since it was a last minute decision the outdoor patio was already packed. We were seated where our out of towners would have the best view facing outside...they loved it. They are already planning another stop here on their next visit. The dining area, as expected was packed! The service was great, efficient and friendly! The dining area and the entire site is kept very clean. The food is always good! On weekends and at peak times I imagine parking to be a problem, as it was today. Valet parking is available right outside the door and they are very reasonable. We are gonna stop by again, this time on a weekday and off peak hours. We did miss they outdoor dining.......Next time! This place is highly recommended and well worth the stop!More

I made a reservation for June 23rd on June 2nd, as it was for 12 people (family reunion, ages 2 to 75). I called the restaurant directly to reserve for 6 PM, outside. On the 23rd, I personally visited the restaurant at 2:30 PM to...confirm the details: time, location, etc. Maddie, the hostess at that time was very accomodating showing me where the table would be outside and confirming 12 people at 6 PM. When we arrived at 6 PM, the hostess, not Maddie, told me that "someone had called and changed our reservation to 6:30 PM". So people were already seated at the table Maddie had showed me and nothing would be available until at least 6:30. This was an obvious bold-faced lie. I was the only one in our party planning dinners this week and no one called. With a 2 and 4 year old in our party, waiting was a real problem. The hostesses were not at all nice, they just wanted us to move into the bar and start buying drinks. We were finally seated at 6:45 at two adjacent tables for 6. Unacceptable to say the least. I negotiated a bottle of wine from them (it was not offered), but to say our evening was ruined from the start is an understatement. I never got a sincere apology from management. 2 stars because the food was very good, the service was as well. And of course the view is great.More

We came here for lunch one afternoon on our way down to San Diego. Its a very nice place with ample out door seating and an open air concept. Obvi very white privilege but it was still super nice and accepting. The fish and chips...were amazing and the drinks were super strong. So we will be back for sure.More

We were pretty excited about eating here. Coming from the Midwest, ending the Pandemic Lock-In, and getting some seafood while on vacation sounded great. We are vaccinated, so the paranoia about covid is much less than a year ago. But, this was the only place...we encountered on vacation that made us uncomfortable. The staff wore masks, but none of the patrons did. People were shoulder to shoulder at the bar and the veranda tables were as close as they possibly could be. Our "outside table" that we reserved, was inside. It was near a door, so they considered it an outside table. The menu had some specialty drinks, including an Old Fashion Cocktail, something that I've had and made many times. This Old Fashion Cocktail consisted of bourbon on ice with a cherry; the worst I've ever had. I was tempted to give the bartender a lesson in how to make this properly, but felt my efforts would not be well received. The starter of Lobster Rissoto was good, hot, and had nice chunks of lobster and asparagus. Whether it was actually "rissoto" with arborio rice and parmesan was up for debate at our table. My wire's Shrimp Martini looked excellent with five jumbo shrimp in a martini glass. We both had the "lobster tail" for dinner, at $42. It came with roasted potatoes, asparagus, dipping butter, and a delicious corn salad dish. However, disappointingly it was only half a lobster tail (see photo). It was all delicious, but quite inappropriately cut in half. So, overall it is hard to give this restaurant a good rating. The cocktail was dismal, our reservation for outdoor seating was not honored, the lobster tail was only half of what it should be, and the COVID distancing was non-existent. Personally, I would not return.More

Had a excellent experience on a busy Sunday afternoon in February. The view from the patio is great, you are on the beach so you can people watch while waiting for your meal. Our waiter William was excellent, he did not forget about us. We...had sandwiches that were great! Will go back for sure. Not as expensive has I thought it would be.More
