A friend and I were walking on the beach and stopped in on a whim. Fortunately, we were early and easily got a table. The food is pricey, but the quality was excellent. I had the crispy chicken sandwich that was paired with an ever-so-finely...chopped kale slaw, fresh tomato, and Swiss cheese, piled neatly on a bun, and shoestring fries on the side. The sandwich came in three pieces, making it easy to eat. I had enough for dinner the next night. My companion had the French dip, and unlike a previous poster’s experience, I was told it was delicious. The staff were young, attentive, and professional, and we never felt rushed, though the restaurant was jam-packed by the time we left. Great experience all around.More

Yummy wood-fire grilled food. Generous portions and great service. It was packed, so get reservations in advance. Loved the rotisserie chicken, mashed potatoes, guacamole, filet mignon, and the chocolate mouse. Everything was really yummy! We would go back sometime. Great local spot.

Having spent a lot of time at the original Bandera up in Brentwood, I thought I'd try this location while down in Laguna and Newport. It's located right off the PCH and even has a small self-parking lot. So far, so good! The room looked...beautiful (and not too dated, even though it's been here awhile), with perfect low amber lighting. Somehow the whole restaurant feels a tad bit claustrophobic, though... due to a relatively low ceiling throughout. It was a weekday night and it was very, very busy, totally packed with well-off Orange County people (who really are different than LA people). Staff was uniformly nice, though I felt a little rushed (Hillstone tends to do this at most locations, especially at Bandera... the worst location for that being Bandera Brentwood). However, the biggest issue I had was that the food was subpar. The jalapeno queso and guacamole dip duo is just too dense and spicy and is a poor substitute for the spinach and artichoke dip they offer at other Hillstones. Plus at Hillstone, they never bring enough chips (though they will if you ask for more). Unfortunately, I had a genuinely awful french dip sandwich, too. Worst ever at this chain. Should be such an easy dish. Completely dried out meat... in tiny little pieces, not the typical juicy big slices. I would have sent it back but would have had to wait another hour to get it. Surprised the kitchen staff would even put it on a plate. So I had an okay experience with subpar food, and while the prices are reasonable, this place still isn't cheap. I doubt I'd come back, so that's why it gets 3 stars from me.More

Salmon was served with cucumber salad only... potato purée was surprisingly missing. Still the same high price for less food. It is a great meal for people who are on a diet though. Had to order sides additionally. No “happy birthday” small complimentary desert for...our birthday dinner.More

We finally found ourselves staying in CDM and we’re getting to know all the local shops and restaurants. We tried Banderas last night and couldn’t have had a better experience. Our waiter, Edwin, shares my father’s name, so of course that was an instant connection....Edwin had great input into our order: tri tip with enchilada and lamb sandwich. But those dishes had so many layers than their names imply. The lamb especially is very tender, sliced thinly and so flavorful too. Soft peppers and a hint of lemon on the sandwich added to the complexity. My husband had a martini and I had a nice glass of Turley Zinfandel and we were stuffed! Edwin was so personable and friendly and what a great story he has. The manager came over to check on us and offered us a slice of banana cream pie but we were so full we had to unfortunately decline. Be sure we’ll be back again for that! Thank you one and all— excellent staff, ambience and of course food.More

Brought our family for our twin granddaughters birthdays and were none too happy when the bill arrived and we were charged $24 for their birthday desserts. Insulting at best after spending over $300 for food and drink.

Always great food here. Service was a bit off which was unusual glasses empty for more than 15 minutes at a time. The macho Chicken salad was smallish at 23.00 and had three small pieces of chicken. Was delicious but not worth $23.00 as where...was the chicken Could have been an off night just reporting.More

Bandera is a top choice for locals, with an upscale vibe that is still coastal casual. Good food, specializing in healthy and hearty option like Macho salad, riibs, chicken and other other fresh items.

Searching for a nice diner we were attracted by a nice wooden house. Inside we were welcomed by a warm mix of wooden interior an candle light. In the middle or the big room was a bar. The super friendly waitress brought us our menus....Hmmm very yummmie. The house speciality was the long rosted chicken. It was gorgeous. The encilladas are also absolutely perfect also the same with the chicken salad. Well done. We will come back soon.More

Returned to have dinner after going every time I am in CA. Ordered chicken sandwich which I order every time and its delicious...! Two of us asked for no slaw, they put mayo in it and I don't eat it. When the server brought it...to the table it came mayo on the bread??? we asked to take it back and bring without mayo (that's why we didn't have the slaw) the server took it and when it came back the General Manager brought it to us and didn't say anything. THAT was totally fine but, when your check was brought to us it was fine, they took the cc card to charge us, when returned to sign it was double the amount. they didn't apologize or anything. That's a big deal it was a debit card and the money was gone until the middle of the next week, after calling them several times and getting the run around they finally took half off the bill...NOT GOOD ENOUGH> not happy. the whole story would take to long. NEVER going BACK. Food was great!More

"you have to try their banana cream pie". words to justify a drive down to corona del mar from northridge. hillstone establishments have been a pretty high standard among my wife and I's higher-end food rotation. houstons, gulfstream. entrees at these places have always been...top shelf (hawaiian rib eye, bbq ribs), and equally stellar, their desserts (chocolate sundae, tres leches). bringing us to bandera, a member of the hillstone group. dinner selection: tri-tip and enchilada platter and the rotisserie chicken and barbecue rib combo. appetizer: corn bread. dessert: what else? banana cream pie. corn bread: could eat it every day tri-tip: dry, borderline burnt enchilada: quite yummy chicken: undercooked (returned to kitchen for further cooking) rib: extra quite yummy banana cream pie: so disappointing. so disappointing. again, the only reason we drove 70+ miles was for this pie. bottom line, the food was satisfactory at best. at these prices, one would expect more. however, the saving grace for all hillstone group places is the service staff. always pleasant, attentive, and receptive to resolving any issues. we only pointed out the underdone chicken, and they provided a new serving. i will consider one more visit to sample other entrees and the other dessert option, but i wish our first visit was more positive.More
