This place was exactly what I was hoping it it would be. Solid no frills edomae style sushi. I was not looking for rolls/makis or fusion sushi or cocktails. I just want good sushi carefully made. Thats exaxtly what we got. Their homemade tofu was yummy too. Reasonable price was a bonus. Service was fine. I don't want an overly friendly service. There to eat, not chat. If you appreciate good sushi, come. If you want rolls with too much sauce, look elsewhere

My wife and I were the guest of our daughter and SIL. SIL set up a chefs tasting (only two per night.) and it was stellar! I never saw a menu. My SIL had raved about this place and now it is all clear. I can't recall all of the dished but it was about 12. Some one bite, some a bit more. All outstanding. I need to follow up with my SIL to get directions on setting this up in the future. This has ruined every other sushi restaurant I have ever visited. We found the chef and servers friendly and soft spoken. The entire evening was a delight

The sushi is top notch but the service is lacking. If you don't mind the unfriendly service, the food is worth it. Not the nicest space in town but, again, worth it for the quality of the food.

I would’ve given five stars, but the wife/co-owner of the restaurant, who is also the waitress, is a miserable human. She is just god-awful/snooty/arrogant and she ruins the experience. I would prefer not to give her my business. I have eaten here a few times, and each time I ask myself why do I come back? It’s for the great sushi, of course, but let me give you an example. I was on the phone one day trying to make a reservation. She was on speakerphone while I was calling from a well-known wine tasting room. I asked if she had any availability at that hour and she said no. I asked if she had any availability the following hour, and she said no. I asked, how about the next day? She said no and hung up on me! Everyone at the winetasting heard it and were shocked. They thought she was awful and said they would never recommend anyone eat at Akaoni. If you want to pay hundreds for a sadistic experience, eat here.

We've picked 4 food items from the menu and two drinks, waitress said that we need to order minimum of $60.00.( she is standing there and calculating my order I guess) I was very surprised,,I've paid for the drinks and left. I also own a business, I couldn't tell my customer such a thing! Spend this much or I don't serve you. They didn't like my $44.00 order. Shame on the owner of this restaurant!! I mean it!! Ungrateful people!!

My husband and I were recommended Akaoni from the locals. Unfortunately our dining experience was less than to be desired. We booked on the day, the hostess was cool and quite rude on the phone when my husband asked for a space for two. When we arrived at the restaurant the hostess looked at us and said we didn’t have a booking, despite the restaurant not being full. Finally she let us sit down at one of the tables. The menu is limited, while the food was pleasant, there are other Japanese restaurants with better food and nicer hospitality. Consider other options for dinner in Carmel by the sea!

First of all, it was recommended by YT blogger. No mention of reservation needed to eat in this Resto but I still called them numerous times but no answer. We even tried their website, it's broken. Dinner service starts at 5pm. We were the first in line, hoping we can get seats. First thing She asked, do you have reservations? I said No. We have our faces and a foot on the door, we were just 2 couples in line. They got in 4 customers at 5pm still we didn't get to plead our case. I found the BEST SUSHI and they ain't them! They are the rudest people on the face of the earth. Snobbery at its finest.

I went to the restaurant coz it’s listed on Michelin recommendations, They are way from friendly and welcoming, felt like unwanted to be there, but I realized I’m not the only one have this impression , after I have red other comments . Sushi is good but doesn’t deserve to be listed as the best in the area. I won’t come back.

Plan on going somewhere else. You ever see the Seinfeld episode? Well this place is sort of like that soup place. The lady is just plain rude. Plenty of other sushi options nearby.

WORST SERVICE EVER, 150$ FOR 5 DISHES We have never felt so uncomfortable in a place before. The restaurant closes at 20,00, and since we entered at 19,10 inside the place the waiter starts dealing with us literally like s**t, without a minimum of education, few minutes for order and not a single word more. Taking care about all the guests excepting us.. the funny part was that she becomes more kind with the check, probably because she pretend a tip for her unprofessional service.. and after I said that was 0$ she running after me doing charity for 10$. I USED TO LEAVE TIPS, BUT NOT WHEN SOMEONE DOESN’T DESERVE IT. I wouldn’t be honest saying that the food wasn’t good but for sure it doesn’t deserve the cost, particularly with a woman that has no idea what service is.

Hole-in-the-wall sushi restaurant. Some friends recommended that we make reservations. That took almost two weeks to get a hold of someone. but it's tiny and we were so glad we did! I don't think we were fully prepared for the experience. It's a non-descript little joint that I'm not even sure had a sign outside with it's name on it. We showed up a few minutes early for our reservation because we had been warned that we might get yelled out. And we didn't! Sushi was really good. No background music or ambiance in the place. We felt like we needed to whisper in order to respect the place and the other diners. It was only later that we found out we had eaten at a Michelin starred restaurant. Which makes the whole story even that much better!

We each had a 10-piece sushi set which was possibly the best we’ve ever had (including from restaurants visited in Japan!) Super fresh, hand made in front of us. Perfect.

For all of those people posting on here that are whining about not getting into this place without a reservation or for those posting negative things about the owner and his wife’s demeanor-trust me-you wouldn’t know a great sushi restaurant or perfect Japanese hospitality if it hit you in the face. Shin and Yoko are the kindest of kind, they work very hard and Shin’s always fresh sushi is the best between L.A. and San Francisco. If ya’ll would mind your manners and be respectful of him, his lovely wife and his art you may end up with a coveted seat at this wonderful place. Then again, I am sure his work is so beyond your hillbilly palate that my advice is to find yourself a Beni-Hana and move on down the road. Akaoni is a dream!

Very rude. I understand this place is so popular and sometimes is fully booked. However they don't even let me finish my words and hang off the phone while I as still talking. What kind customer service it is?
