It is tucked away from the tourists flooding the other restaurants. They do not rush you so you have time to talk and enjoy. I had a seafood dish which was delicious. I would definitely return. Reservations are a must.

L'escargot is tucked out of the hub of downtown Carmel. It has been in busy for over 50 years catering mainly to local clientele. Dino, our waiter was not only very personable but very knowledgeable about the food and wine. No way is this restaurant #30 on list of best restaurants. They are booked overnight for a reason. I disagree... More

I have mixed feelings about this restaurant. Most of it has to do with the ambiance...there really isn`t much. It was quite cold (temp) and didn`t really feel all that French. The service is fine but perhaps just a tad too attentive. I always get the scallops so for me the food is great. But our last meal was not... More

I would not rate L'escargot as being "magnifique" or "fancy and authentic" as two of my fellow reviewers have. L'escargot has been business for many years, so the assumption is that it is doing something correctly--and perhaps it is. Its ambience is inviting and its menu and wine list are absorbing. The only one really annoying problem was our well-intended... More

Escargot does have snails (in 3 versions). Also frog's legs, baked onion soup and steak frites. Even cassoulet in season. They have a good 3 course dinner at a reasonable price. Most entrees are pricey, but in line with most upscale Carmel restaurants, which are at least as expensive as top places in major cities, though there are a few... More

In a "previous life" Anne used to enjoy L'escargot ocassionaly but I had never tried it. After hearing her rave about it for several years we finally dropped in for what I call an "ambience check" about four years ago but based on a quick look around we decided it seemed a tad rundown for the special dinner we had... My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner at L'Escargot. We had the pate, then duck breast & leg for her and rabbit pasta for me, and we finished with rhubarb/strawberry cake for her and caramelized apple tart for me. I am French and all ingredients and preparation felt authentic and generous. Service was great and our waiter was enthusiastic... More

Located in a quant building on a side street in downtown Carmel, L'Escargot is a Carmel institution. This is the place to eat if you like some of the classic French dishes like escargot, frogs legs and rabbit.

Great atmosphere, fantastic food, wonderful service. The staff knows their products well and can deliciously describe the dish to you! From the rack of lamb to the veal medallions to the steak frites, all was very delicious. Quiet rooms, unpretentious and comfortable.

Once again the food and service are magnificent. The chef created a special with scallops on lemon asparagus risotto with fried capers, pumpkin seeds in a picata sauce it was amazing and all the flavors just blended perfectly. The staff is amazing making the best lemon drop I have ever had. Do not miss going here for dinner.
