We read an article about Guyi's mapo tofu in the LA Times and decided to give it a try. We arrived when the restaurant opened and were seated immediately. We ordered mapo tofu, cumin lamb, popcorn chicken, honey walnut shrimp, and mixed veggies. The food...came out promptly and everything tasted delicious, though the mixed veggies (yams and mu erh) was very bland. The cumin lamb and popcorn chicken were numbingly satisfying. Even though we requested mild spicy for the folks at our table with mild palates, they did not skimp on the Szechuan peppercorns in the mapo tofu, nor the chilies in the popcorn chicken. I definitely recommend this restaurant if you like spicy Chinese food.More

Quick summary: Very good food, good service and great location at a reasonable prices The home made pork and chives dumplings are a must. There are many reasons to be skeptical about this restaurant. The Westside of Los Angles does not have good Chinese food,...especially Brentwood. It's also located on the third floor of the Brentwood Collection building where over a half dozen restaurants have failed in the last several years. But I'm an optimist and love Chinese food, so I gave it try. The place was pretty empty at 6:30pm on a Sunday but it started to fill up a bit. The menu seemed really hard core (Authentic, as in how they serve it in China) Chinese with limited pictures and descriptions. Then you get to the "American" section of the menu and you realize that they just might survive in Brentwood. I ordered the sweet and sour squirrel shaped whole fried fish and my husband ordered beef and scallions (American side of the menu). We also got the pork and chives homemade dumplings and string beans as our vegetable. The ordering was not the most refined because the server did not speak perfect English but it added authenticity to the experience, which I appreciated. The food came out fast and the all the ingredients were very high quality and delicious. We over ordered for two people so did not get to dessert but there were some things I definitely want to try out next time.More

GuYi has only been open a month but its a great new Chinese restaurant on the Westside in an upscale Mall. The food is great, everything from the mouth watering chicken (served cold) to the quick fried and sweet and sour ribs are very tasty...and unusual, The menu is obviously not complete as several pages are still missing but what they have is really good Chinese cuisine, albeit maybe not to the west's taste buds as there are several different animal intestines and tripe, which would be on any menu in Shanghai and maybe on Atlantic Ave, in Arcadia, but not necessarily on a menu in Brentwood. On a Sunday night it was packed and for the most part a Chinese clientele which has a lot to say for the authenticity. Its a place I will definitely visit againMore
