Our meal was delicious! We shared a few things including a soba noodle salad that was incredible flavorful and felt very nutritious. We will definitely return and try some of their other entrees. Only downside was they are cash-only and their ATM was not working.

We were a party of five, none who had been there. The food was excellent. The service was also fine. The only thing to be aware of is that they do not take credit cards (or checks either I think).

I was searching for a nearby vegetarian and vegan-friendly restaurant and chose to go to Cha Ya, a vegetarian Japanese restaurant in the Gourmet Ghetto area of Berkeley. Having lived in Japan for extended periods of time on multiple occasions, and having eaten at numerous other local Japanese restaurants, I thought it would be an interesting place to try. We... Finally, a Japanese restaurant with a full menu of vegetarian sushi made with actual vegetables, not just tofu or egg! I love this place and I'm so not a vegetarian, I'm just fond of eggplant nigiri, but as I keep coming back I keep branching out and trying new things and I've liked everything so far, the hosomaki and the... We LOVED this resteraunt!!! Went on a Friday night around 6:30 pm and we could sit wherever we wanted, since it wasnt busy at all. So we sat by the open window, which was very nice. We had the sea vegetable salad, which was EXCELLENT, including the YUMMY sauce. (but I did ask for a fork since I dont do... More

We recently discovered Cha-ya and we had a great experience there. Nice atmosphere and friendly service. Soups and sushi are the best we had in the area. We also liked the banana dessert a lot. The tempurs could be improved a bit, though. Cha-ya is now our favorite restaurant in Berkeley. Highly recommended.

As a bacon (and meat and seafood) lover, I was a little wary about a vegetarian Japanese restaurant. But I was in a hurry and ducked in for the Yasai on my way to the airport... and could not have been more pleasantly surprised. My meal was savory, delicious, and flavorful, and I could not have been more satisfied!! The... More

Great soups with lots of vegetables, tofu with a perfect sauce. The only dish I did not like was the tempura because there was too much batter.

We had both the Vege-Tofu curry with soba noodles and the Yasai (cooked vegetables) with Lidon noodles. Both outstanding with large protions. The curry was not hot spicy but had a hint of spice. Both were well presented (see attached photo). We will be back to try their other offerings. The only deal in cash but you do not need... More

When I first heard about Cha-ya, I was super dubious as I love meat and I love fish, especially raw fish in sushi! But Cha-ya proved to me that fish was not needed for an incredible meal and an incredible experience. I visit my family in Berkeley, CA once a year and this is the one restaurant I absolutely have...
