East coast transplant here, so glad I found this pizza place (they sell slices or pies) that is truly NYC-style (thin, floppy slices perfect for folding) but with Berkeley toppings (fresh, high quality produce) like plenty of earthy, fresh mushrooms piled on the Funghi, or kale or broccoli, all straight from the farmers market! Slices from giant 18" pies are... More

Is it good that such delicious pizza is within two miles of my home? Yes and no - for the obvious reasons. Which are our favorites - anchovy and hot pepper? mushroom? There are so many. Few choices, just a counter to eat in and not cheap pizza - but they do it so well! And it's in a cute... More

A great local place with fresh ingredients but our pepperoni pizza was too salty. Would go again and get vegetarian next time, the choices looked great!

Though it is possible to perch at the counter and eat their pizza, almost everyone who comes here walks off with a pie or ambles away munching on a slice. This is the block with a fish store, horticultural nursery, and produce market that are world class and tiny Gioia fits right in. Quality never varies and the outer crust,... More

Have been to Gioia twice and both times the food was fabulous. Wonderful heirloom tomato and green been appetizer and wonderful Julian Pizza. Cute little place on Polk Street. Extremely busy so get a reservation. I used their website and Open Table worked great.

Summary based on several take out orders: --good product with departures from what you'll find at Cheeseboard, Sliver, or Zachary's, so great if you're looking for something new --ok prices --service can be overwhelmed and slow --ok street parking Best to call ahead for whole pies for take out.

Went to a local farmer market to buy some fruits and vegetable. Wonder up and down the street, we ran into a local pizza joint. The place seem crowded during our visit, the line moved fast, the server seem nice. A bit crowd place to eat in - bar counter top style sitting........would be tough for a party more than... More

Tucked away in the petite and lovely corridor on Hopkins in North Berkeley is unassuming but amazing pizza shop. They rotate their pizza offerings by the slice often but the quality never suffers. Like Cheeseboard, but without the wait!

We go out of our way to get the whole Mushroom Pizza and take home. This pizza--and the thin tasty crust rivals--NY pizzas. Other selections are very good, but don't miss out on the Mushroom Pizza!

Gioia has the best cheap, by-the-slice, thin crust pizza in Berkeley. There is better pizza, but it's in a high end restaurant (Pizzaiolo), Californian (Cheese Board), or something else. The spinach and garlic was very good, and the plain cheese is reliable. The crust is a bit on the thin side and not chewy enough. The tomato sauce is fresh... More
