An interesting design space built by Joinery Structures - a well-known Berkeley construction firm known for their traditional Japanese construction methods - it felt like you are in a restaurant back alley in Kyoto. The "street" is the main circulation aisle with lots of staff walking back and forth between one side that is mostly hard wood booths with Japanese... More

For most, regular sushi and sashimi are the way to taste Japanese food. This is quite different. We have ordered shiitake mushrooms, quail eggs, chicken thighs and tails, smelt fish, crab croquets, pickles, fried chicken wings, chicken gizzards, even the Hitachino undrafted beer with plum flavor tasted great to someone like me, who prefers wine than beer. So if you... More

The food here is delicious, often very rich flavored. It took me a moment to understand what the problem is- we are used to paying top dollar for many small Japanese dishes, however here you pay a lot, but the dishes are made of often cheap (although high quality) ingredients, making the cost hard to justify. $7 table fee is... We really enjoy Japanese cuisine and was looking for something original. Ippuku was not it! Ordered a very nice Japanese whiskey which kicked the evening off nicely. Wife ordered a Shochu grapefruit drink that although dramatic in presentation with a half-grapefruit served with a juicer along with the drink glass, the grapefruit was very bitter and the drink was boring.... this is like an Izakaya in a kaiseki style, executed northern californian style. fresh, seasonal ingredients, thoroughly japanese flavors, prepared in a japanese but also very californian way. wonderful yakitori but they sell out of chicken hearts early in the evening! the seating is pretty neat too -you can have bar, floor (private rooms - subject to availability) and private... This is the best izakaya, or Japanese pub, in the East Bay. The interior is very funky; someone told me recently a pretty edgy architect designed it. As someone who lived in Japan for 10 years and loves food, I will tell you this is very authentic. I've never had a dish I didn't like. I highly recommend closing the... More

I went alone and sat at the bar. The yuba (tofu skin), kushi (chicken skewers), uni, and maitake mushroom tempura were all excellent. The chicken meatball kushi is extraordinary.

We stood at the bar on a Friday night and enjoyed delicious sakes recommended by the knowledgeable bar tender and feasted on delectable dishes. The uni was memorably delicious. I'd suggest calling ahead for reservations. Excellent service and amazing prices, which include tip and tax.

Look, in Japan really good Yakitori tend NOT to be expensive. Quite to the contrary. That said, close your eyes and the tastes will fool you that you might be in Japan. The Yakitori is excellent. The atmosphere fun

In the Bay Area where there are Japanese restaurants galore, Ippuku stands out as the real thing! When you first enter, it seems like an okazuya or a small street eatery in Tokyo. The sake bar has maybe a hundred sake bottles on display, dozens hanging inverted with dispenser hooked up like IV bottles -- ready for emergency administration. A... More
