f you go to Jones Bar-B-Q, you order a pulled pork sandwich. The choices: Do you want slaw on it? (You do.) Do you want chips and a soda? Yes? Chips are on the rack. Sodas are in the Frigidaire. Help yourself. The foil-wrapped sandwich...is filled (though not overfilled) with shreds of pork. Mr. Jones says he has been at it 60 years, and he has clearly figured out the low and slow smoking process to render fat into the meat without making it even slightly greasy. The sandwich was all about the meat. There may have been sauce, but I didn't notice. There was a bottle of sauce on the table. I left it there. The sandwiches are on white bread. Some say it is Wonder Bread. It was a soft, doughy, sliced bread, but I think it had a little more texture to the crumb and a thicker, darker crust than I remember from Wonder Bread. As I worked my way through the meal, I kept thinking that the lightly dressed slaw was starting to make the white bread soggy. But the sog never quite materialized. The pulled pork sandwich is an outwardly simple product, but I suspect Mr. Jones earned his James Beard award because he has nailed the process. The three elements - meat, bread and slaw - are simply perfect. After lunch, I learned that Jones Bar-B-Q nearly burned to the ground in February. A fire that started in the back where the smoking happens destroyed 70% of the garage-like building that sits on a narrow residential street in Marianna, Arkansas. I also learned that citizens of the town of 3,500, a BBQ restaurant in a nearby town and others from around the world had within days of the fire donated tens of thousands of dollars to help Jones rebuild. Five months later, the restaurant was again churning out sandwiches.More

We took a bit of a detour on our way to Memphis to check out this place, but it is so worth it!! Your menu choice is a pulled pork sandwich and that’s it. It’s served on generic white bread with sauce and coleslaw on...it. How something so simple can be so delicious is beyond me. Get at least two if you have an appetite. One the best I have ever had!More

It's true ... $3.50 buys you a pulled pork sandwich on wonder bread that you can have without or without slaw. The smoke is on the light side, and the pork is lightly sauced to give the sandwich a distinct vinegary taste. It also turns...the bread soggy in short order, so you might want to have utensils to hand, never mind napkins! Personally, we prefer a more smoky flavor, and a great deal more meat on our sandwiches (see photo), so we rated this at the bottom of the 5 pulled pork sandwiches that we have eaten on our current odyssey. It should be added that the coleslaw is fresh, but lacks character; it neither adds to nor detracts from the flavor of the meat. Sadly, given its place in American restaurant history, I'm afraid that for us this one is strictly one and done..More

The menu is a pulled pork sandwich with or without slaw, chips (Lays) and sodas (Pepsi products). You can order the sandwich without the bread. They did not have water in a glass or in a bottle. The sandwich is served on white bread (I...prefer a bun) and the sauce is very thin which soaks through the bread. There were no forks there the day that I went and I did need a fork because the bread fell apart. To me the BBQ was Ok but nothing special. This was the second time that I ate there and I still just do not get it.More

We were told they sell out early so went around 10am. It is more of a carryout place so by the time we got back it was cold. BBQ was good. Only chips and soda.

By far one of the best as written in magazines! Call early because they only have so much, and when it’s gone it’s gone.

Although I was born in Memphis and lived there the first couple of years I moved to Marianna and attended school 1st through 12th grades. I consider Marianna to be my hometown. I just returned to Marianna for my 50th High School Reunion and had...the good fortune to try Jones BBQ pulled pork sandwich. It was excellent but somewhat drier than Memphus style and not as sweet. The drier Carolina Style meat was OK but not what I am use to, but the sauce was less sweet which I like better. Although the sauce was less sweet it was also very thin which tends to soak thr bread or bun more quickly so they fall apart. For these reasons I five the restaurant 4-Stars rather than 5. This truly is a most excellent barbeque for such a small eatery and such a small town. Food Critic, James Beard, was correct in his review , but you be the judge.More

Since we retired 6 years ago, we have been on a perpetual barbecue road trip, visiting approximately 80 barbecue restaurants in 8 different states. While in Helena, Arkansas last week, we were told about Jones Bar-B-Q Diner having been named the best barbecue in the...US and receiving the James Beard Award. So, we set out to find this place, making sure that we arrived before 11:00 AM. When we arrived, no one else was there, so Mr. Jones greeted us warmly and let us take photos. In the 45 minutes we were there, the customers began to pour in. On the day we went, besides their favorite barbecue sandwich on white bread with cole slaw, Mr. Jones was also offering a smoked sausage link (also on white bread). Both were delicious. The barbecue was juicy and had a noticeable hickory-smoked flavor, because it's cooked the old-fashioned way over hickory wood. The barbecue sandwich with slaw at $3.50 is a bargain! Mr. Jones could charge $8 or $10, and out-of-town barbecue enthusiasts wouldn't bat an eye about going there! The fabulous barbecue, the rustic decor of the restaurant, and the friendly demeanor of Mr. Jones made us see why this is such a highly popular restaurant. As we were leaving, we drove around the back and got a tour of the area where they cook the barbecue and store the hickory logs. In April, we went to Louie Mueller Barbecue in Taylor, Texas, also a James Beard award-winning barbecue restaurant. If you are a true barbecue aficionado (pork or beef), both Jones and Mueller need to be on your bucket list! Be forewarned, this building is two blocks off the highway in a residential area, so use your GPS!More

We’ve tried to eat here twice now without luck. They open at 7 am and close when they sell out of BBQ or get tired. They rarely answer the phone so you just have to show up. One time we drove all the way from...I 40 only to find them closed. We spent 3 nights in the area recently and tried all 3 days and each time they were closed or sold out, once at 10:30 am. They are still in business but just on unusual terms.More

I was in Memphis (1.5 hour drive each way) for work and had some down time. So I wanted to check out the award winning Jones BBQ. Wow! I got there at 11:30 with warnings from people outside that he was running out. I got...my sandwich with slaw and a pop for $4. Best $4 I've ever spent! I would and will make this drive again. The sandwich is so simple yet so complex.More

This place is simply amazing. We make a special trip out of our way to go here every year. This is one of the only places to receive a James Beard Award in Arkansas. There's absolutely reason for it. The most uncomplicated place you'll ever...eat. You either get a sandwich with slaw or without slaw and Lay's potato chips. Just Lay's, no other types of chips to pick from. A drink from the refrigerator. That's it. Cash only. It will be like no other barbecue sandwich between two pieces of Wonder Bread that you will ever eat.More

Hands down, one, if not the absolute best tasting Barbecue sandwiches I have ever had. If you aren't going to have a seat at one of the two tables to dine in, then I would suggest you buy extra sandwiches because they are so good...you will eat the first one and not even realize you ate it. I literally almost bit four fingers off before I realized there wasn't any more sandwich left. Luckily I was dining in. They have a first aid kit and patched me up so I just ordered three more sandwiches and paid more attention this time...More

Heard about this place on TV and seen it in some magazines. James Beard award for old classic BBQ. Get there early because when he runs out of food he closes for the day. We got 5 lbs. of BBQ, and 4 pints of sauce...to take with us to family dinner for the night. Not much eating space inside.More

They open at 6:30 am and go until they run out which is usually lunch time. If you'll call ahead they will save you some.
