I visited Sanon on my recent trip to Bagan and loved knowing about how they provide a home to disadvantaged youth of Myanmar and train them. There really are very few things that are better than supporting a place where it’s evident that your money...would directly go and improve someone’s life, right? My friends and I were running short on time and could only try the ginger salad and some tea. And, even though the salad was delicious and a true epitome of local flavours, what I loved most about this place was how kind the staff was. Everyone always served with a smile on their faces and that is reason enough to visit here, if you ask me :)More

We came here for dinner, read reviews and also wanted to support their advocacy. Ordered their specials for the day which was Spaghetti Bolognese with braised duck. Now I've never seen that on the meny before anywhere so decided to try that. But not to...my liking. It just doesn't go well for me. Food and drinks were a bit pricey for Bagan area. I still want to support their objective but they still need a lot of improvement in terms of customer service and menu / dish selection.More

Had a lovely candlelit outside terrace table (thoughtfully equipped with anti mosquito lotion) and were efficiently brought drinks. Ordered watercress pakhora for starters - delicious! Then one of us had a wonderful Burmese lentil curry and the other a burger and fries! The curry was...especially good and the service was attentive throughout, with the maitre D providing supportive oversight for the young trainees. As we were paying the bill, Sonia and Gordon, the volunteer trustees passed by and we chatted about the training foundation with them. It’s a newish Venture and it’s so good to see some Myanmar youngsters being trained up in hospitality and English! They’re doing a great job and we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening and dinner. First and foremost, Sanon is a wonderful culinary training school/restaurant run by volunteers and staffed both in the kitchen and in the dining room by students eager to please, learn English and a restaurant skill. Your patronage will help an important cause. The management told...me that they have specifically chosen to present a menu of moderate and accessible dishes knowing that Bagan is a tourist Mecca. Probably wise. Everything the four of us eat was fine or better. The Eggplant salad was excellent. Having said that, I think they should add some local specialties/traditional dishes with a more full flavored profile. Everything we ate could also have used a good healthy oomph in flavor and spice (not necessarily hotter but certainly hotter, when appropriate). They filter all of the water they use to clean and prepare foods (and ice) which is important to know.More
