A relaxing place, and it was our best food experience in Bagan. The waiters speak limited English as they are still under training, but we can feel that they are trying their best to make every customer happy. It was supposed to be a quick lunch, end up we spent more than 2 hours there and talked to the volunteer there. It will be a meaningful meal for you as all their profit goes back to the charity again to help youths in difficulties to build their career. Highly recommended!

Hi Vicky - thank you so much for taking the effort to leave us a review. It was so great to have you and your two friends join us for lunch. Your visit means a lot to us, as our students would not be able to receive their training without customers like yourself. As a social enterprise, we are grateful that you have chosen to support our vision of a better future for disadvantaged Myanmar youths. Hope you enjoyed your trip to Myanmar and we welcome you to our restaurant if you happen to visit again.

I was aware of Sanon where local students are trained in the area of hospitality and so was looking forward to eating at the restaurant. I wasn't disappointed! I was met at the door by wonderful smiling faces who provided outstanding service from the start of the evening through to paying the bill. The menu is very varied and the food is excellent. I would particularly recommend the pennywort salad, the caramelised pork and the chocolate cheesecake accompanied by either a watermelon juice or Pina Colado. Some of our party also ordered a selection of dishes to share to sample the many other dishes that they offer. It is a unique environment in Bagan and I would have no hesitation in going back to eat and drink should I ever have the opportunity to return to Bagan.

My Shan Khauk Swe was absolutely delicious. If you like Bolognese, you should give it a try!
The staff is attentive and friendly and tables are spaced wide apart.
Since the meal is freshly prepared, it takes a few minutes until it is served, so plan accordingly (this is not fast food).

We had a fantastic meal at Sanon Restaurant where we enjoyed a great menu of Burmese dishes and inspired cocktails alongside excellent service and a beautifully designed dining space. As others have pointed out, Sanon is a training program for Burmese youth for culinary skills and service. The meal preparation and service are almost strictly performed by students who are currently enrolled in the program. Whether at home or abroad, it's always a privilege to watch young individuals learn, grow and thrive in something they enjoy. The enthusiasm of the staff was palpable throughout the meal. The food was very good and on its own, a reason to dine at Sanon. We had a quick chat with Gordon who is one half of the Australian duo volunteering to make this project a success - despite arriving minutes before off a flight from Yangon, he took the time to passionately chat about the program and its goals.
Please support this project by taking the time to dine at Sanon. You won't be disappointed!
FYI: The tea leaf salad and pennywort salad is excellent here. The restaurant uses purified water for all its meal and drink prep.

Thank you so much for writing about us and sharing your experience - we are so glad you enjoyed your time here. Our salads are very popular amongst customers, especially the tea leaf salad and pennywort salad that you had!
There is certainly a warm fuzzy feeling when you dine at the best restaurant in Bagan whilst making a difference to the future of disadvantaged youths at the same time. Wishing you the best for the rest of your time in Myanmar.

I read lots of reviews on this restaurant and really wanted to love it but to me it was just average. When I attempted to order wine the server had no idea what I was talking about and I eventually just went over to the wine display and chose my own bottle.
We ordered the duck confit and the caramelised pork. A whole duck arrived cut in half and plunked down on a plate with no thought to presentation. I did not realize that the pork would be so cloyingly sweet and chose not to eat it as there was enough duck for a whole family! I know this is a training restaurant but I did not see any results of said training.

Thank you so much for providing us your valuable feedback. As a not-for-profit social enterprise, it is our goal to delight our guests and provide them with a memorable experience whilst training disadvantaged students - however it seems we missed you this time. We are terribly sorry to hear that the duck confit and caramelised pork did not turn out the way you desired - we will take note of this and pass on to our chef. We will also ensure that all students undergo further training in wine options so customers can have an unforgettable dining experience. Once again, we thank you for your visit and hope you will give us another try if you happen to be in Bagan. Best wishes in your Myanmar adventures.

Sanon Restaurant is a training establishment for young people to develop their english and all hospitality skills, resulting in them being placed in employment at the end of their training. They are well schooled by skilled Myanmaris and overseas volunteers with international experience. The food is competitively priced, tasty, true to the local and international diets and the service is 1sincere and enthusiastic. We visited 6 restaurants in Bagan in the week we were there and found Sanon was equal or better in quality to the others. Highly recommended for both the trainees and their clients. Definitely a win win. Congratulations Sanon.

First and foremost, Sanon is a wonderful culinary training school/restaurant run by volunteers and staffed both in the kitchen and in the dining room by students eager to please, learn English and a restaurant skill. Your patronage will help an important cause.
The management told me that they have specifically chosen to present a menu of moderate and accessible dishes knowing that Bagan is a tourist Mecca. Probably wise. Everything the four of us eat was fine or better. The Eggplant salad was excellent. Having said that, I think they should add some local specialties/traditional dishes with a more full flavored profile. Everything we ate could also have used a good healthy oomph in flavor and spice (not necessarily hotter but certainly hotter, when appropriate).
They filter all of the water they use to clean and prepare foods (and ice) which is important to know.

Thank you so much for dropping by Sanon yesterday - it was our pleasure to host you. As a training restaurant, you are helping to make lives better for disadvantaged Myanmar youth. We are so glad to hear you enjoyed our dishes, which features a Burmese fusion menu with a western twist. We appreciate your feedback and are actually in the midst of developing an ethnic menu. This will include traditional dishes from various states our students come from and is due to be launched in May this year. Thank you once again for sharing a meal with us, and we wish you a memorable trip in Myanmar!

We came here for dinner, read reviews and also wanted to support their advocacy.
Ordered their specials for the day which was Spaghetti Bolognese with braised duck. Now I've never seen that on the meny before anywhere so decided to try that. But not to my liking. It just doesn't go well for me.
Food and drinks were a bit pricey for Bagan area.
I still want to support their objective but they still need a lot of improvement in terms of customer service and menu / dish selection.

Thank you so much for your visit and feedback - we are sorry to hear the spaghetti did not meet your standards. Whilst we strive to provide customers a seamless experience, we certainly do not expect every dish to be perfect. As a training restaurant providing opportunities for disadvantaged youths, we welcome your suggestions - so let us know where we let you down and we shall rectify this next time. Please give us another chance to delight you if you will be here for a few more days. Thank you once again and on behalf of our students, we wish you a memorable time in Myanmar.

This was my 6th time coming here and I will keep coming back. I work in Mandalay and make it to Bagan a few times a year. This is my favorite restaurant here and I recommend it to everyone who visits.
We celebrated my dad’s birthday here last night and the staff made it memorable for him by coming out to sing happy birthday. We loved the squash and cheese fritters, tea leaf salad, caramelized pork, and coconut semolina cake.

really great to see this initiative in bagan, esp for disadvantaged students. my kids had the burger and asked for no onions or pickles, and it came perfectly as we asked. the cheese and squash fritters were great, kids ate them.all. the shan noodle is good but needs lime on the side. the beef curry recipe was ok, not great. drinks were good, but i think the smoothie might need some tweaking! in general, we had a wonderful experience, the wait staff is are so attentive but a little shy and not as confident with their english, so we tried to speak as clearly as possible. you can also hear occasional "yes chef!" from the kitchen which is really nice to hear from a training restaurant. wishing all the students the best of luck for the future

Thank you so much Janice for the detailed review of your Sanon experience - we value your feedback as a training restaurant, since we are always striving for the best possible service for our guests. Customer satisfaction is what we are about - simply let us know how we can cater to your needs and we will make it right for you. As most of our students in training come from disadvantaged backgrounds, Sanon is a place where they build their confidence in customer service and hospitality. As you can imagine, most have never interacted with foreigners prior to coming to Sanon - let alone speaking English - so we thank you for your patients in allowing them to practice and learn. On behalf of the students, I would like to thank you once again for your visit and we warmly welcome you if you happen to be in Bagan next time!

Sanon is not only a restaurant with great food and helpful nice people but also a non profit organisation which teaches young people a proper job and English skills. They support the disadvantaged people to find a job after the school and broaden their horizons. That was a pleasure to meet them and I can highly recommend cooking class as well delicious food! Great and safe place in Bagan!

Came here for dinner - i opted for a burger and it was very delicious! thick patty with also lots of vegetables with fresh french fries! I also ordered a banana fritters for dessert which is also a pleasant surprise! The atmosphere is very relaxed and they have a good selection of wine too!(I didn't try but saw the wine cabinet!)
The restaurant sets up with a noble cause of training disadvantaged youth in Bagan in the hospitality industry. This social enterprise is still quite new but already done impressive job of training over 30 (?) students. They also do cooking classes for visitors as well. Highly recommend to put this restaurant in your itinerary in Bagan and you will not disappoint.

I visited Sanon on my recent trip to Bagan and loved knowing about how they provide a home to disadvantaged youth of Myanmar and train them. There really are very few things that are better than supporting a place where it’s evident that your money would directly go and improve someone’s life, right?
My friends and I were running short on time and could only try the ginger salad and some tea. And, even though the salad was delicious and a true epitome of local flavours, what I loved most about this place was how kind the staff was.
Everyone always served with a smile on their faces and that is reason enough to visit here, if you ask me :)

Loved this restaurant! All the staff are young locals learning the trade of hospitality from cooking to waiting tables. They were all so lovely and showed us around their kitchen and classrooms. The food was great, so fresh. Highly recommend supporting this place as it’s doing some great things with ensuring locals have a job and security at the end of their studies. They offer cooking classes so we will be going back to join in on that later this week!
