In China, it's rare for a foreigner to be able to find a place that has no compromises. You usually have to deal with bad service, bad quality, etc., but low prices. Highlands Coffee is a rare gem that has no compromises.
--environment: clean, spacious,...designated smoking area
--prices: pricey but not horrible
--service: English service; thoughtful; polite; attentive
--bones: restrooms have toilets, toilet paper, paper towels, and soap
The owners know their demographic. Their customers are either expats who crave their coffee fix but are stuck in non-westernized Chinese city, Guiyang, or are young Chinese who crave everything Western but feel that Starbucks is too mainstream. Highlands slots in nicely to fill that niche. The place is not that easy to find. It is in an alley. Once I walked in, I wasn't sure if I came to the right place because it was not packed and busy like Starbucks usually is and given the high praises that this place gets I thought there'd be more people. To me, though, that's good. That means a nice place to chill with seating. There's also a designated smoking room. What? A designated smoking room in a non-westernized Chinese city? Wow. The restrooms are also very clean with toilets, soap, toilet paper, and paper towels. What? Wow! The coffee is good, prices are okay, service is good. The rest is history.More
I stayed 6 nights in Guiyang for business trip. and have visited Highlands coffee several times and they have much better coffee then Hotel Sheraton where I stayed. Also met owner of the restaurant I read some reviews and went there. Great coffee helpful staff....keep it up guys. The cook gave me coffee cup printed their logo as gift.
Thanks for everything.More
We spend here a a lazy Sunday afternoon and this was just the perfect place to spend it. The interior is simple and feels very comfortable and they only play great music here! We had something to eat and drink, all excellent. One point of...attention is that this place seems to open only from 3pm.More
Should you need a time to unwind, read or just chat, void of unwelcome commotion, bustle and noise in a company of friends or colleagues, and being served a masterly prepared cup of cafe-latte or cappuccino with a yummy pastry or varied sandwiches, this indeed...is a perfect place to spend a lovely mid-afternoon or an evening just prior your entering local Guiyang's fine theater or philharmonic gala show. Prices are most reasonable, English speaking staff very attentive and friendly, atmosphere perfect, while smokers are kept aside behind a glassy partition. Free wi-fi service available too. All just lovely -- a must place for any foreigner to visit!More
My girlfriend and I often visit here to plan our lessons for the weeks teaching. The panini's are delicious, affordable and the staff don't mind customising the panini in order to suit your dietary requirements (Neither of us eat animal products). The staff are friendly...and speak a good level of English. Highlands offer a relaxed environment in the heart of the city, even with a separate area for people who smoke! Great little find.More
Very good pastrami sandwich.....served with a vegetable soup......the browne i think was one of the best dessert i had in guiyang....and the coffe was good.......soo nice breack from the crazy traffic of the city......
came across this place on our last day in guiyang and enjoyed a pretty good cup of joe and a blueberry cheesecake that was better than expected. Friendly staff, good environment and a nice glass separation between smoking and non-smoking sections.
Sometimes you just want a decent cup of coffee, a decent sandwich, and a cup of soup. And some top-notch cheesecake. This place could be anywhere in the USA, but's its on a funny little street (alley?) in Guiyang. I spent a week in Guiyang...last year and had this place scoped out before I left home. I met the owner, who is a super nice guy and originally from Indiana. This place was my anchor when we were in Guiyang, and we ate lunch there a few times. Grabbed a coffee there more than that. Panini was awesome and a cup of veggie soup. Wow. Thank you, thank you. You made a stressful trip a bit more calm.More
