Perfectly nice Sunday roast

I see recent reviews have been terrible. However our Sunday roast was perfectly nice. We got the £5 deal which made it very good value for money. I had half a chicken, roasts, mash, parsnip, carrots, sprouts and a Yorkshire pudding. Could not fault the service either (although I have to admit the... read more

We both ordered rib eye steak with triple Cooked chips from the menu. My husband was served a rump steak and on complaining he was told it was ribeye as the plastic bag it came in said it was and that they were all the same out there. They cooked another and again served a rump steak. The chips were... More

Started with a hand written note on entrance door '45 minute wait for food'! Did not make us feel welcome! Very slow service. Food took for ever. Starter hard & over cooked. Main course over an hour later, greasy and tasteless. Unpleasant all round. Staff tried but service was patchy and covered the bare minimum required. Would not recommend this... More

Arguably the worst lunch meal I have had in a pub for a long time. My pulled pork jacket potato was probably prepared at least the day before. The salad on the side was definatly old and a great dollop of butter on a leaf salad? The pulled pork burger ordered by my partner was old and tired, how else... More

We were expecting a nice casual lunch in a well known establishment that for years had a good reputation. Sadly we were very disappointed. The senior waitress/manager was extremely off-hand as if she would prefer us not to be there. Hygiene was poor, the menus were dirty (all four of them); the paper napkins had stains on them, the cutlery... More

The Bear is a lovely building, well located, decent parking, good size and nicely decorated. The food is also very good for the price. I went for the lamb shank and it fell off the bone - it also left me without room for dessert. It was the finishing touches that let the bear down a bit in the end.... More

I recently attended this Hotel for a Christmas Party. I have known this Hotel for 35 years and used it for 33 years. Never have I known it to be so bad. The food was really dire. My Prawn Cocktail consisted of a couple of bits of tired and wilting lettuce with a very small portion of what were clearly... More

Thank you for your review, clearly you do not seem to enjoy The Bear Hotel. The Bear is quite a different business from the previous Michelin starred incarnation which was sold 2 and a half years ago. To compare this to the current incarnation is like comparing The Thornatons chocolate shop to the previous incarnation as Dominos Pizza Parlour. 2... More

Arriving at the Bear you would be forgiven for thinking you were walking in a good quality gastropub. Indeed, with dishes endorsed by Tom Kerridge we expected a lot from the food. The Bear is done up really well inside with lovely features. Toilets had clearly been refurbished recently. We started by ordering drinks at the bar - reasonable prices... More
