We love small, local places like this, which is good because choices in the Portal / Rodeo area are extremely limited. This is a tiny place with 5 tables inside & a few outside on the patio (with partial shade). There's also a back room with more tables & a huge flat-screen, but no atmosphere whatsoever. Other than being quaint... More

It would be easy to feel deprived of good dinning experiences if one lives in or travels to the beautiful but secluded Chiricahua Mountains in South East AZ. but fortunately we have the Portal Peak Store and Café to provide travelers with tasty simple cooking in a beautiful atmosphere relished by birders and nature lovers. The food runs from hearty... More

We were just rolling through didn't have a lot of time. However it was nice "stretch my legs" stop. I bought a couple beers from the General Store and sat outside next to the band shell u under the trees. It w as quiet, peaceful and just perfect for a little R&R. Don't miss this little gem if you're traveling... More

Portal is a very small town and can't support big establishments. That said the cafe is a small country affair with good food at reasonable prices. The staff is efficient and friendly. If you prefer you can eat at the outside patio. Be sure to try the cobbler with a scoop of ice cream. The store carries a small variety... More

We ate here as part of a group of 24. We were served a large portion of smoked chicken, beans and cole slaw, followed by a nice square of carrot cake. Our friends told us the food was better when they visited with fewer people.

Portal is like going back in time - the town consists of a library, a post office and the Portal Peak Lodge Store and Café. We were served a hearty breakfast and loved the atmosphere. After breakfast we walked up a path and enjoyed the mountain air and scenery.

While on a recent trip through the spectacular Chiricahua Mountains on our way to visit the Geronimo Surrender Site, we happened to stop at a wonderful backroad Arizona destination called the Portal Peak Lodge Store & Cafe. This is truly a slice of Arizona history with the type of hospitality that used to be so common here and is now... More

I never had food served on a small aluminum tray before but that was ok! Fries are thick and hot and the sandwich not too bad. The menu is limited but they do have an awful lot of beer and wine! Just a bit too pricey for my wallet.

Lucky for all the birders and naturalists that visit the Portal area, this little cafe is a great spot to have lunch or diinner. Really good burgers, fresh salads and yummy paninis, as well as cold draft beer. It sure saved our rears several times after a long hot day of birding and hiking. And the option to dine outside... Portal is a mecca for birders, naturalists and others who appreciate nature The mall cafe reminds you of a time warp...where locals might ride their horses up to the hitching post to grab a meal and local gossip. They even still have a Phone Booth...for those of us who remember them

Thank Marc W
