Love the food at this joint, but we were surprised that the dining room was empty during happy hour. Now we know why! Ordered margaritas during happy hour, but were charged full price. Also, a tip was added to our bill, although we were only...a party of 2. We have never been to a restaurant where a mandatory tip was added to a party of 2. We will NEVER return to this restaurant! Paid our $106 bill for 3 margaritas and dinner for 2 at 5:00 in the afternoon. It was ok, but outrageously priced.More

This spot used to be a favorite, with a great Mexica coastal vibe and really good food. Not this time. The chicken chimi came back as a beef chimi with strange sauce. The error was corrected, but the chicken version was really bland. The whole...tilapia was not much better. And an extra charge for chips and salsa in a Mexican restaurant? Really? Simply no reason to return.More

Shocked an appalled Their waiter has mistaken us for someone else an we use to go there pretty regular we go in today this waiter comes up to us an makes this announcement you are no longer welcome here if we don’t want to tip..., I was beyond shocked my husband is a excellent tipper so after that I stood at the bar an the people sitting next to me said he was just joking an I said no that was not a joke my husband follows him to the back an says what are you talking about the guy says you didn’t tip last week an my husband says hey that was not us I am sorry you are mistake an he said no we don’t want you here an he said hey what if I was a guy that couldn’t afford to tip an he said well you shouldn’t come here wow wow not that we couldn’t afford to tip our bills there were never under 60 dollars my husband asked to speak to the manager an she comes over an said she will go talk to him have a seat over here she gave us menu’s we ordered an the manager come back to check on us an we find out she says she is the owner an she said I talked with him a little bit give me your number an I will call you, my husband said why do you need to call me are we welcome here or not she said I will call you wow again as business owners our self we would have immediately address the situation especially to customers that were frequent an spent the kind of money we have spent there over the year. Advice to current an new customer if you can’t tip don’t go there, even if you can tip don’t go there this is horrible customer service, but I personally do not believe that it was about a tip there was another lady there that use to wait on us she was really nice an she always knew our order we tipped her very well, you see when you are Christian an on top of that a multi ethnic couple that makes people like that waiter extremely uncomfortable he always had this snob kind of look on his face when he would see us he is trying desperately to be something he is not an knowing he will never be what he wants to pretend to be on the outside, seeing us brings up all kinds of emotions. So I hope they read this an know they have made a grave error an if they continue with this kind of singling people out the business will suffer. I would like to give them no stars but you can’t post without it. After reading all the reviews an their rude an uncaring terrible responses back from the restaurant / owner I can clearly see it was not just us that had a horrible experienced and it clearly shows in their responses to their customers. Here is a TIP for them treat your customers with respect and care about what they are saying and in this economy you are going to start seeing more people that won’t be able to tip so treat all of them as though they did tip you, an your business will grow. Continue doing what you have been you won’t last an I know I have seen your response to others “we have been here for 17 years” we’ll that is no guarantee that it will continue onMore

We first went to Baja Joe’s because they participate in Upside. Each time we have returned, we have been trying different dishes. This last visit was Taco Tuesday with the tacos being 2.50 each. I had ground beef with a crispy shell and my partner...had chicken with a soft shell. Both were very delicious. They have happy hour every day from 9 AM -6PM. If you have room, there are fresh sopapillas and fried ice cream. The first time we went, the server we had, stopped taking care of us ??? And Faby came over to see how we were doing. She explained in great detail about the daily specials and filled us in on the desserts as well. She is so efficient and so full of good information. We request her every time we go and she knows what we want to drink without us having to ask. If she wouldn’t have come to us, we may not have returned. She makes our visits so special. Ask for her, you won’t be disappointed. Some Mexican restaurants and just the same as the last one we went to. Baja Joe’s is really special with beautifully prepared and reasonably priced meals.More

Went for dinner with friends to celebrate birthdays and our friendship. No disappointment here, food was fresh, plentiful and delicious. Karen our server was attentive and helpful. Margaritas were delicious as were our entrees. Seafood was well prepared and very flavorful. Our friends opted for...enchiladas and said they were delicious and satisfying. It's nice to feel welcome and not rushed, well priced and good value. We will definitely be back.More

Our first dinner at Baja Joe's was a fun experience. We will go back. The food was very tasty and served at just the right temperature. I had the Fajita Burro with shrimp and grilled veggies. I ordered rice and beans on the side, as...well as my red sauce. My husband had a Pollo Burro, same sides and enjoyed his very much. My Baja Punch cocktail tasted wonderful, the husband's beer was to his liking. One of our party received a blended margarita instead of the "on the rocks/salt" which she ordered. That error was quickly fixed by our server. Our server, Mike, was helpful and had a very pleasant manner. Our only complaint was the volume of the music - too loud to hear our server and to have a conversation with our dinner companions. We did ask twice for it to be turned down, and it was lowered a bit, but could have been lowered more. As I'm writing this review, I'm enjoying my leftovers - portions are generous and just as delicious reheated!More

We were looking for some Mexican food in the south... Read reviews and picked here... nothing special here. Very loud place! Service was slow to seat us, order and the waiter couldn’t get things correctly. We didn’t get our app ever... wrong drinks. Only positive...from the dinner was the bacon, crab filled shrimp! Amazing!!! Would likely not go back? Waiter needs training, it wasn’t that busy.More

Be aware of Baja Joe’s Mexican Cantina in Mesa. Last night we ate there with some friends, total of 4 people. Our total bill was $158.92. They charged us an automatic gratuity of $31.59, which they said is 18%. Well... 18% of $158.92 is $28.61....It appears they included the taxes when calculating the gratuity. That’s an IRS no-no. I have never seen an automatic gratuity for less than 6 people. At the bottom of their menu, it states, automatic gratuity for parties equaling $100 or 8 people. I called the manager (FERNANDO) about charging gratuity on taxes and he said that’s just the way our system charges it. Two lessons learned. You will be charged automatic gratuity for anything over a $100 and you will pay gratuity on the taxes. I will also inquire with the IRS.More

We hadn't been here for awhile and after the last 4 visits this past month, I'm not sure why we hadn't been there for so long. They do have outdoor dining with a non-smoking and a smoking section. The staff is extremely friendly and efficient....Their guacamole is the best we have had this side of the border. They prepare it tableside so it is the freshest it can be and also they will add more onion, less jalapenos - however you like it. We are extremely fond of the seafood dishes. There are also many other typical Mexican items. The restaurant is a bit noisy so we prefer to sit out on the patio.More

This restaurant is in a shopping center. Plenty of easy parking. Inside is fair to good decor. We go back for the food and drinks, and will keep going back. I've only had their Mexican specialties which by appearance look average fare, but the taste...is special. Friends say I'm missing another aspect of their food, by not having their stuffed burgers - which friends rave about. I also enjoy their exception house margaritas.More

I visited Baja Joe's with family. The decor of the place is bizarre to say the least. It resembles nothing of Baja California and it wasn't very clean either, dingy at best. The service was slow. Chucho was pleasant when he came by but he...did not come by often enough. In fact, every server we were able to summon was friendly but not very attentive. The food was average at best. We ordered appetizers but everything including the main entrees arrived at the same time. My fish taco was cold and dry. My seafood enchiladas were good and plentiful but nothing extraordinary. I asked for rice and beans but the beans did not come with my plate as I ordered them so I had to ask for them from another server. The drinks were fine not great! My experience here is like visiting an all-inclusive average resort in Cabos where you get a lot but nothing authentic and nothing great.More

We returned to Baja Joe's after an absence of a couple of years and were sadly disappointed. Although the service was excellent, the food was sadly lacking. We ordered the combo fajitas and they arrived promptly, hot and looking great! But they were tasteless! No...flavor of any kind of chilies! The tortillas that accompanied them were also tasteless. When the check arrived we found that the chips and salsa we had agreed to weren't free...they are now charging for everything but the water. Sadly we won't be returning anytime soon!More

Four of us went for dinner. The inside is old and very well-used. We sat at a booth in a side room. Our waitress was very attentive and patient. Two of us had no idea what to order. The menu was HUGE and diverse and...unfamiliar to us. The other two people were regulars and knew what they liked. I ordered a chicken burrito with salad. One person order beef and peppers on a sizzling skillet with condiments. The regulars ordered seafood dishes. No one could finish there meals due to the amount of food on each plate. I will speak only to my burrito which was filled with mostly refried beans and some chicken. The salad was simply romaine lettuce in large pieces and a little dressing. The regular patrons loved their dinners and will be back again.More
