We were shown this lovely restaurant by a tour guide initially however were not hungry on that day so we returned by ourselves as wanted to explore further. You walk past the BBQ man whom I’m sure has a proper Argentinian name and into the lovely garden. It’s quaint with cool water being finely sprayed on hot days. The food was great, waiters helpful and there are some interesting artefacts which can make for some great photos. Really good spot amongst the madness of tourism 👍🇦🇷

We ran into El Gran Paraiso on our walk of La Boca and were immediately convinced by the Asado visible from the street. The restaurant is a magic garden lush and green, the staff is welcoming and ready to make any of your wishes come true. The BBQ for two was a lot of meat but it’s so amazing you will finish every last bite. Our waitress Andrea, huge thank you to her, was lovely. She gave fantastic wine suggestions and introduced us to Legui (try it as a digestif). Definitely a place to visit if you want to enjoy a real Argentinian experience in a quite touristy area.

It is hard to believe that anyone visiting the La Boca area would miss eating at this unusual and renowned restaurant. Walking in past the charcoal grills sets the flavor of well prepared meat and walking into the preferable Patio seating area sets the ambiance. There also are indoor and upstairs seating areas. The menu offers a broad selection of Argentine food with a focus upon wood barbecued meat. But the range of fresh salads, baked potatoes and cheese plates offers a dish for most any taste. The service is casually friendly and the portions are huge - so much so that the appetizers could easily serve three modest appetites. The restaurant can get busy at times resulting in a waiting line, but the heavy mix of local folk along with the tourists speaks volumes to the quality of the food and the value of the pricing (6500AP for the largest of salads and 2400AP for a large bottle of Coca Cola).

We had a wonderful experience in “El Gran Paraíso” Meticulous ambiance and service. We were a group of 10 -Mario was so helpful and setup a beautiful secluded table for us in the patio -we did make a reservation the day of, so we were so thankful they accommodated us. Our server was Augusto very warm and excellent service. Chef Cristian was very friendly... we wanted to get his opinion as we wanted the best steak. With a smile he explained to us the different types of meat they had and suggested the type of cut we should order based on our preferences. We will be in BA for another 3 weeks and before we leave we would love to visit again. If you are in La Boca El Gran Paraíso is a must. Thank you Mario, Augusto and Chef Cristian for a wonderful experience.

We were looking for somewhere where we could see the food being cooked and that also offered good wine … without being off the scale price wise! This place did not disappoint. We both had the ribeye steak…cooked as we liked. It came with grilled aubergine, courgette, a rustic potato and carrot. Succulent and huge! The bottle of Malbec from Mendoza was perfect for what we had. In total the bill was roughly $50, much cheaper than in the UK. Great staff and there’s a tiny museum to visit and it’s off the main street so no onlookers whilst you eat!!

Stopped in for wonderful lunch. Some of the best steak I have eaten in Argentina. The caprice salad was delightful with fresh pesto and the baked cheese with walnuts and rosemary was great. The staff was friendly and helpful. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

The warning signs were there when the bread arrived - stale. The steak looked lovely on the plate but was lacking in taste, dry despite being cooked rare to medium and slightly tough. I’ve had better steak from my London supermarket. Even the salad of tomato and lettuce tasted of absolutely nothing dressed with the cheapest watery vinegar and oil.

Hi Kim. Thanks for your feedback. We are very sorry for your experience. All ingredients are high quality for our local standards, are the best in its type. It’s a pity you didn’t tell the waiter about the steak, may be he could choose another tasty meat cut. Do you remember which meat cut did you have? Hope one day you can give us a second chance ! Just to check, our restaurant address is Garibaldi 1428 and the entrance is by the train railways. Thanks again, Info@granparaiso.con.ar

My wife and I, senior visitors from the US had lunch on 01/12/2024. The ambiance was inviting and the maître d' spoke English. He showed us an attractive pile of meats. What ended up on our plate, allegedly a flank stake was a different matter. Half of the meat was very fatty and tender, half was hard to chew. Flank stake is one of our favorite dishes in New York. We do not believe that the cut was "flank steak ", listed as "vacio". Surprisingly, there was also a charge for "Cubierto Mayor", explained to us to be a charge for "setting up the able". The service was otherwise good, but the unpleasant meat, of dubious quality, was disappointing.

We had an overnight stay in Buenos Aires whilst on South American cruise. This was a gem to find. Drawn in by the smell and cooking we found a delightful courtyard and covered area. We had the most helpful service and advice from Augustus ( sorry if I got your name wrong) and enjoyed a steak and Argentinian wine to remember even a post meal treat! Thank you all so much. I rarely write reviews - but I’d love to come back.

Our guide knew the owner and he took us up to the roof for a quick lunch (we were on a private tour and did not want to have a 2 hour lunch). The food we had, salads and empanadas were very good. They expedited serving us to accommodate us, but this looked like a great place for barbecue (we saw them cooking the meat) and to have a leisurely meal. If we had gone back to La Boca area, would have eaten here again.

I love this place. We stumbled upon it after touring La Boca. I could have stayed all day. The atmosphere feels like you are in someone's house in the country cooking traditional Argentine BBQ. The best part was the grilled cheese (no bread) mixed with walnuts, honey and rosemary. To die for! I really loved El Gran Paraiso - such a delicious and magical stop on our trip.

After walking around La Boca we decided to stop by the well-known Gran Paraiso Restaurant. The entrance to the place is very good! The first thing you see are grills full of meat, a lot of smoke, firewood, grills, good silver! As we arrived late we ordered a choripan on the go, I accompanied it with a drink and a house drink called caminito, highly recommended. They offered me to go eat on a terrace, which overlooks a little path, and has an incredible view. It also has a museum with very cool things, photos, antiques, all very well decorated. The service was 10, super fast and everyone very friendly. As for the price, although everything is very expensive, compared to other restaurants I thought it had a price in line with or even below average. I will definitely return, I want to try the vacuum, which according to what the griller told me takes several hours to cook, it is probably tender and tasty. Super recommended!

I thought the place was overrated. We got there around 2:30 pm and it was quite full, but there were tables for two, which meant we didn't have to wait in line. We entered and were told there were tables at the top, when we went up we saw a table and sat down, it was dirty and had utensils from the last customer. We waited about 10 minutes for the table to be cleaned. In the meantime, we got the menu ourselves to choose from. There was no cordiality from the waiters who passed by with their heads down and didn't look at our waves. Finally we proceeded to order some drinks. We didn't want to order the food straight away and the waiter informed us that he would pay to occupy the table (and we weren't going to order the food at the moment, but we wanted to eat). Okay, we ordered a starter which was Provoleta with ham and arugula (excellent, but it took more than 40 minutes). Then we ordered a steak de lomo with potatoes, it took almost an hour. It was divine. Oh, every table received a basket of bread and sauce at the beginning, except ours. I think the waiter thought we weren't going to eat it, I don't know. But I felt a different service compared to others. Anyway, I felt very uncomfortable during my visit to the place. We paid 17,500 pesos (expensive compared to other places, but justified because it is close to a tourist attraction). We paid 800 pesos just to occupy the table. I found it absurd.

Unfortunately I couldn't taste the meat while sitting at a table with service. We arrived and asked (we speak Spanish and English) a young lady at the entrance if we could eat and she replied that we had to buy a ticket, collect our food and go and sit looking for a table. We did everything and with our purchase we went to look for a table and as soon as we entered the restaurant we saw that there were people sitting at the set tables eating meat peacefully. By now we had the tray and ate on a wooden table. Upon leaving, when I asked why we hadn't been able to eat at the table by ordering normally, I was told that I had two options, a restaurant or, as I did, a self-service tray. In short, if you have collaborators who don't know how it works and clearly explain the options, send them home. Unfortunately I couldn't eat some of the meat which was perhaps very good.

A good choice in a touristy area. We did the meat grill - they did not ask how we wanted it cooked. Came out a bit overdone (medium well), but was flavored well. Service was good and beer was cold.

La Boca
A neighborhood defined by its immigrant roots, La Boca still maintains this past alive in its streets today. Due to its proximity to the river, the neighborhood became the preferred settling area for immigrants of a wide variety of origins, who ended up living together in the conventillos. Thus, these houses became a melting pot of different cultures and traditions that birthed creations like tango and lunfardo. Nowadays, this legacy can be seen and felt on Caminito Street, which welcomes visitors with colorful facades, cobblestones, and street artists showcasing their skills. Just like its neighbor San Telmo, La Boca is one of the prime destinations to experience the traditions and customs that originated from the city’s immigrant past and which have shaped its distinct identity.
